Top teams clash Thursday
By ROBERT McDONALO
Sports Writer
The early season top ranking
in men’s intramural soflball will
be decided Thursday when last
year’s champion and present No.
1 Two Days in the Hole clashes
with No. 2 In the Pink at 6:00
p.m.
Both teams are undefeated
and unchallenged after rolling
through their first two oppo
nents. Two Days spanked the E-
xpress 20-1 on Thursday and In
the Pink won by forfeit.
“It should definitely be a show
down,” Two Days co-captain
Mike Sanders said.
The game will match teams
with different styles of play, espe
cially on offense.
Two Days is basically a singles
hitting team that’s quick to take
the extra-base on an opponent’s
miscue. An outstanding, mis
take-free defense supports this
base-to-base attack by keeping
most opponents in check.
If Two Days’ defense fails them
and Thursday’s game turns into a
slugfest, then In the Pink will
have the decided advantage.
In the Pink is like the Jose
Canseco of UGA intramural
softball. No team in this year’s
field can match the In the Pink
for raw power and ability, but its
.'players tend to be a little over
confident at times.
When In the Pink plays within
itself, hitting the ball hard but on
line and making the plays in the
field, its a tough team to beat. In
the upcoming game Two Days
will find out just how tough.
While Two Days and In the
Pink are the cream of the crop in
men’s action, the BSU Slammers,

the Vet School Women and Le
thal Weapon look like the
strongest of the women’s teams.
With a solid nucleus from last
season’s final four contenders re
turning and some capable new
comers filling in key roles, the
Slammers should be the top
team.
“We’re talented, but we have to
gell,” Jeff Bagwell, coach of the
Slammers, said. “Well just have
to see what happens towards the
end of the season.”
The Vet School Women, prob
ably the Slammers top chal
lenger, crushed Angel Flight 21-0
in their first game.
In one big upset from last
week’s men’s play, the highly-
touted Spachones fell to the Big
Sticks 11-10.
"We really took it on the chin,”
Spachones’ shortstop Steve Mw-
roka said. “We made errors all
over the place.”
In other top ten games, Spirits
beat the Black Plague 11-6, Just
For Jeff shook the Monsters 9-4,
the M.D’s sunk the Frogmen 14-
1, the Rho Boys shot down AF-
ROTC-2 8-6, Bad Assets beat the
Six Flo Ho’s 11-0, Delta Tau
Delta defeated Sigma Nu 11-9
and Showtime cleaned up on
Chemical Waste 13-12.

‘Unique and misunderstood’
Frisbee fanatics find game the ultimate
By ROBERT McDONALO
Sports Writer
Like cowboys in an old-time
western duel, two lines of seven
competitors stood facing each other
on opposite ends of a 120 x 40 yard
field.
Their stares were intense, their
bodies taut as they prepared for
what was ahead. Sizing up the
competition, each man chose who
he would cover and set himself. It
was time for the Ultimate frisbee
game to begin.
Intense stares over a game of
frisbee? What gives?
Indeed, Ultimate frisbee is one
of the most unique, but misunder
stood sports around.
Combining aspects of football
and basketball, Ultimate is a sport
of speed, grace, quickness and
agility. Play is fast and furious,
with pin-point passing, jumps,
dives and sprints. There are no lei
surely tosses, and concentration is
a must.
“It’s not about throwing the
frisbee in the park,” Shawn Rob
inson, a University junior and avid
Ultimate player, said. “It’s a sport
where you really have to want it to
do well. It’s such a game of inches. I
think you have to be completely
consumed in the game or you’ll get
passed by.”
A typical game of Ultimate be
gins with something of a kickoff,
with the frisbee or disc tossed from
one end of the field to the other.
The goal of the offense is to score
a point by passing the disc over an
end zone line. No running with the
disc is allowed, but that’s the only
time a player on the field stands
still.
Usually man covers man, the of
fense trying to catch the frisbee,
the defense attempting to knock it
down for a turnover. Needless to
say, teamwork is essential.
“It’s a fast-paced game,” Rob
inson said. “Everyone has equal
rank. Everyone is a quarterback
and a receiver.”
First team to 15 or sometimes 17
points wins, but according to Tony
Eubanks, faculty advisor to the
UGA Frisbee Club, there are none
of the pressures to win at all costs
found in other sports.
“Competition and sports
manship — that’s what it’s all
about,” Eubanks said. “Ultimate
frisbee players can go out on the
field and put everything they have
into it, but as soon as the game is
over, they can go out and have a
beer with the other team.”
This lack of emphasis on win
ning, Eubanks said, is exemplified
by the fact that the sport is player
officiated; no referees are used.
‘There are six informal ob
servers on the sidelines,” Eubanks
said. “But their role is passive.
They don’t make any calls unless
both teams agree to come to them.”
Eubanks, who teaches ac
counting courses at the University,
said another positive aspect of the
sport is its accessibilty.
“It’s open to a lot of people,” he
said. “You don’t have to be line
backer type. Basically, if you can
run and throw, you can play.”
Since the UGA Frisbee Club’s
founding nine years ago, Ultimate
has become more and more popular
at the University. Today, tne club
fields both a men’s and a women’s
team, and both will be competing
in the college regionals May 12 and
13 at Emory University.
Robinson, who co-captains the
men’s squad, said his team is one of
the favorites to win the competi
tion and move on to nationals.
The women’s chances are less
certain. Michelle Smith, a senior
member of the team, said the
squad lacks playing experience be
cause there aren’t that many
women’s teams to play in the area.
“We have to travel to Atlanta
just for a practice game,” she said.
“It’s tough on us. We’re going to
have a good team, but we have to
play a lot.”
Smith said she’s looking for a
successful women’s program at
UGA to lead to increased interest
in the sport elsewhere.
“We want to establish a base,”
she said. “By establishing a team
here, we hope other schools will
start teams.”
One event that is sure to con
tinue to attract interest to the
sport is the Ultimate Bowl, an an
nual Ultimate tournament spon
sored by the frisbee club that has
become the largest tournament of
its kind in the Southeast.
This year’s Ultimate Bowl was
held April 21 and 22 at the intra
mural fields with 20 men’s and
eight women’s teams competing.
For those unfamiliar with the
sport, the tourney was an en
joyable learning experience.
Senior education m^jor Charles
York, for instance, had never seen
an Ultimate game until the tour
ney’s semi-finals.
“I’m impressed,” York said. “I
didn’t think it would be this fast of
a game. I’d like to try it, but I can’t
throw a frisbee like they can.”
For York and many other first
time Ultimate spectators, lesson
one came quick: On the field, the
sport is hard-nosed and compet
itive. Off the field, relaxation is the
goal.
Judging from the sights around
the tournament, Ultimate frisbee
players and those who follow the
sport are generally laid-back types,
comfortable with a warm day, a
cool breeze and a cold beer when
notplaying.
‘There’s a saying,” Eubanks
said. “Ultimate is not just a game,
it’s a lifestyle.”
That’s not to say that Ultimate
followers are lax in their support of
the game, especially when the in
tegrity and spirit of the sport are
threatened.
“When a team starts to show bad
sportsmanship, spectators will
really ride it from the sidelines,”
Eubanks said. “It’s kind of a self
policing thing by the players.”
Despite these policing efforts,
Eubanks said he fears the sport
will lose some of its purity if it
grows too large and big money be
comes involved. But for now, only
the Ultimate faithful control the
sport, and they intend to preserve
its refreshing (especially in today’s
stuffy world of big-money college
athletics) spirit.
“It’s weird, the addiction you can
have to a piece of plastic,” Smith
said, twirling a disc in her hand.
