Tired of the same ol' restaurant scene in Athens? Well, why not
spruce up and take in a nice dinner at The Savannah Room, a
new restaurant at the Georgia Center. They have a chic French
menu and good prices. Call 542-6341 for reservations.
McCarters add life to older style
■ REVIEW
By DAVID WILLIAMS
Contributing Writer
Jennifer McCarter was deter
mined to make it in the country
music business. She did just that,
dragging her younger twin sisters,
Lisa and Teresa, with her.
Jennifer has been encouraging
her sisters since they began per
forming together in grade school
and was known to threaten them
with a leather belt when they
wouldn’t practice.
Her dedication obviously paid off
with their first album ‘The Gift,”
which scored two top five country
singles.
“Better Be Home Soon,” the Mc
Carters’ second album is proof that
three “big haired” girls from Sie-
verville, Tenn. can survive in the
big time. The album is a collection
of different country styles which
show off the McCarters’ voices and
their versatility.
The songs range from the up
tempo “Up and Gone” to country
waltzes and old fashioned ballads
The McCarters handle these style
changes gracefully. The combina
tion of strong melodies and seam
less harmonies give this album its
appeal.
One of the best songs on the
album is a beautiful blue-grass
ballad called “Mountain Mem
ories." However, the album is con
sistently enjoyable, making it hard
to pick a favorite.
The album’s most surprising
track is the title song “Better Be
Home Soon,” a cover of Crowded
House’s hit.
It may seem odd for a country
and western trio to cover a song by
a pop group from New Zealand, but
after listening to the McCarters’
version it seems that Crowded
House may have written a country
song without realizing it.
Many dismissed the surprising
success of Jennifer McCarter and
the McCarters’ first album ‘The
Gift” as a fluke. “Better Be Home
Soon” proves that the McCarters
are no one-hit wonder.
Jennifer McCarter and the Mc
Carters give a fresh interpretation
of traditional country styles. They
cover well-traveled ground, but it’s
good ground and they cover it well.

Sinead O’Connor: Delivers the goods on new release
‘I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got’
■ ALBUM REVIEW
By RACHEL CURRY
Entertainment Writer
The young woman singing to
the audience at the Fox Theatre
Tuesday night was wearing red
velvet. A red hood covered her
scalp. Halfway through her song,
she lifted it off, revealing a small
tuft of hair on the top of her
crown. The rest of her head was
bare.
The audience cheered as loud
as they possibly could, but Sinead
O’Connor wasn’t fazed. She went
right on singing “Feel So Dif
ferent,” a heartwrenching song
from her new album, “I Do Not
Want What I Haven’t Got,” the
follow up to her 1987 debut “The
Lion and The Cobra.”
When “The Lion and the
Cobra” was released, Sinead’s
hair, or lack of it, was what
people seemed to notice first. The
next thing was the petite singer’s
tough exterior and don’t-mess-
with-me attitude.
However, when given a closer
look, the world began to notice
O’Connor for what she is — a
truly unique and talented singer-
songwriter who has no trouble
speaking her mind about political
issues.
Her sound is definitely innova
tive. O’Connor manipulates her
vocal chords as if they were an in
strument. She growls, wails and
shrills in a manner totally for
eign to progressive rock.
Her songs are characterized by
a heavy electric sound, despera
tely sad lyrics and powerful vo
cals.
This year O’Connor released
her second album, “I Do Not
Want What I Haven’t Got.” This
offering reveals a mellower, more
subdued performer.
Possibly changed by marriage
and motherhood (she recently
married her drummer, John Rey
nolds, with whom she has a two-
year-old son named Jake), the 23-
year-old O’Connor ha9 altered
her musical style from electric to
acoustic and has toned down her
vocals considerably.
The wailing and howling on
her first album are gone. Instead,
Sinead sings in a calmer tone far
from the writhing sound that she
created on “The Lion and The
Cobra.”
Her music has more beauty
than mystery now. The topics of
her songs are, on the whole, more
personal than the last album.
The political emphasis is not
gone, but now Sinead sings of
motherhood and being affected
by the record business.
Performing her harder-edged
songs like “The Emperor’s New
Clothes” and “Jump In The
River,” O’Connor jumped around
in front of her band, waving her
arms and shaking her head in a
happy, childlike fashion. For
tunes such as “Three Babies” and
“Black Boys On Mopeds,”
O’Connor was left alone on the
stage with her acoustic guitar.
She had no trouble going it
alone. Her trademark voice was
enough to hold the crowd.
