Vintage hats are a finishing touch and add an element of class to modem
day clothing
By KRISTEN SMITH
L isted below is a quiz that might tell you
something about yourself. Answer the
following:
I prefer:
1. Denim a la James Dean or Acid washed
jeans a la Tiffany
2. Covered buttons or Velcro
3. Beaded bags or Belly bags
4. Fedoras and derbies or Baseball caps
with slogans
5. Flower appliques or Hawaiian shirts
6. Short, belted skirts or Belt-width skirts
If you chose three or more from the first
column you already appreciate vintage
clothing. If your answers landed in the second
column, don't worry, the following vintage
clothing guide has been prepared for you.
"Antique," "retro" and "collectible" all
describe old clothes, but in Athens the
preferred moniker is "vintage," and it refers to
pre-1970s clothing and accessories.
"It's authentic pop-art," said Paul Thomas,
owner of Spend Money Here, located in the
Morton Theatre Building.
Whether you like the vamp look of the
1920s, the sophistication of the 1930s, the
padded shoulders of the 1940s, the full skirts
of the 1950s, the wide belts of the 1960s, or
just want to look more like singer Tom Waits,
there is something downtown for you.
Vintage clothing connoisseurs give
persuasive reasons for being hooked on old
clothes.
"The best buy on the market today are old
things," said Karen White, owner of Second
Time Around on College Square. "You get
prettier things, one-of-a-kind, better quality,
most unique, for less money. That's what wins
people over. It's not the age; it's just that their
quality and beauty transcend time."
Heatherleigh Navarre is one of the new
owners of Ragtime (soon to be renamed
Funkadelia) on Lumpkin Street. She explained
the popularity of old clothes.
"People started wearing Vintage clothes for
these reasons: they were cheap, they were
good quality, and they were a good
expression of individuality."
Vanessa Dotson, a UGA alumna, also
expresses her individuality in vintage clothing.
"I don't wear vintage clothing to get a
response from somebody, it's just that I think
the clothes are a lot better. They're well-
made."
Marc Wallace, owner of GO clothing
upstairs on College Square, put it simply.
"Number one, it's hard to find something in
my store that's more than $24. Number two,
it's going to be one-of-a-kind."
Vintage clothing comprises more than just
quality, beauty, uniqueness and a good price,
though. According to former GO employee Nic
Holt, it also has a certain mystique.
"When you buy something old, it's got some
history with it. It's been somewhere. It's seen
somethings that you haven't seen. When you
buy something new, it just smells new and
looks new, but it has no history or personality.
You have to be a really special person with a
lot of personality that you can donate to these
(brand new) inanimate objects to be able to
pull it off."
He said that when people ask about a
vintage piece, "you can tell them where you
got it but you can't tell them where it's been.
So it's mysterious. I think people have a secret
love of mysterious things. That's the whole
fashion behind that. That's why it's cool,
because it's mysterious."
