Human Rights Fest mixes fun with new ideas
By COLEEN BROOKS
Entertainment Writer
This weekend the 12th Annual
Human Rights Festival will once
again offer the Athens community
the chance to come down and par
ticipate in its program of art, music
and informative fun.
The first Human Rights Festival
was held in 1978 by the Student
Coalition of Peace and Equality, in
remembrance of the students mur
dered at Kent and Jackson State
Universities. In the years since
then, the festival has grown in size
and focus and now features an im
pressive list of organizations and
speakers. This year for the first
time there will be a voter registra
tion table and a food collection
check point for the Athens area
food bank.
Paul Butchart, one of the orga
nizers of the event said,'Basically,
the festival is a forum for progres
sive political ideas. We set out to be
pretty informative and to turn
people on to new ideas."
Butchart said that in the past
the festival has been criticized be
cause of some of their more contro
versial speakers.
"We’ve even been called commu
nists but I say that if communism
and community come from the
same root — then maybe we are.
It’s all about working for the
common good. We’re community-
ists,” Butchart said.
He said that unlike some of the
other recent festivals in town, the
streets will not be crowded with
vendors selling things for indi
vidual profit. Butchart said infor
mation-oriented tables will be set
up instead.
Farley Daniel, a volunteer
member of the art auction com
mittee, said her main concern with
this year’s festival was that a
closer connection be reinstated
with the University and students.
"The relationship with the Un-
versity used to be much stronger
than it is now. We even used to
hold the festival on Legion Field
but now it seems like we’ve lost
that contact,” Daniel said.
A new wave of volunteerism and
activisim has been growing in
Athens over the past 10 years,
Daniel said. She said she hopes
that students in the community
will find this common ground and
channel it towards positive
changes.
Daniel said the auction and
other festival activities can benefit
everyone. The art auction is now in
its fifth year and will showcase a
surprising variety of works by
local, national and international
artists. To date, over 20 individ
uals have donated pieces for the
sale, the proceeds of which will
help support the Athens Rape
Crisis Line and NO HARME, a
local organization concerned with
recycling and animal rights.
Well-known Athens personali
ties have donated pieces to this
year’s auction, whicn will be held
Sunday from 3-5 p.m. on College
Square. These works include an
autographed poster of the B-52s, a
piece by Brant Slay of the Chick
asaw Muddpuppies and a platinum
REM record, as well as posters
signed by the band members. Mi
chael Stipe has also personally con
tributed one of his paintings that
four-time auction organizer Bob
Johns describes as “pop art in a
post-pop world.”
There are also works by Rev
Howard Finster, famous for his
work on the cover of REM’s “Reck
oning” album and a contribution by
Paul Warhola, older brother of the
late Andy Warhol, entitled “Vege
tarian Baked Beans.” Daniel and
Johns agree that these items
should garner lots of attention and
hopefully make money for the
charities involved.
Music is another important part
of the Human Rights Festival. Ap
proximately 15 local bands are do
nating their talent in free
performances all weekend on the
stage at the intersection of College
Avenue and Broad Street.
Aaron Phillips of the Skinpops
said,'The way I understand it is
that in past years there has been a
whole lot of emphasis on hippie
bands and that now-they’re trying
to get a different audience and
broaden their appeal.”
The varied program features
musical styles ranging from the in
dustrial crunch of Jarvik 8 to the
powerful speed metal of Porn Or
chard and the eclectic swamp rock
of the Labrea Stampers.
Jim Tremayne, the manager of
Mercyland, said,‘There seems to
be a lot of different types of bands
this year. They’re going for a more
diverse show.”
The 1990 Human Rights Fes
tival truly promises to have some
thing for everyone. See great
bands, bid on a piece of art work for
a good cause and as Paul Butchart
said, “most importantly, come
ready to learn something.”
