Top intramural softball down
By ROBERT McDONALD

It was not a good week for the
top ranked men's and women's
intramural softball teams ns both
Two Days in the Hole and the
lisp Stammers lost.
Two Days came out tight in
their showdown Thursday with
In the Pink and lost 10 5. Sur
prisingly, it was mistues by Two
Days' touted defense that led to
the loss ns in the Rink jumped
out to a big lead in the early in
nings and was never threatened.
Chris Daniel, pitcher for In the
I’ink, said winning the game and
thus the top-ranking was n major
goal for the duh.
‘We came out hungry and
'played a good game,” Daniel said.
‘We felt all along we should In*
the No. 1 team "
Daniel’s team was not as fortu
nate on Monday as it lost 11-8 to
Spirits in 11 innings in the
second round of a 10-team qual
ifying tournament for the State
Collegiate Softball
Championships to be held in At
lanta on May 18, 19 and 20.
With one out, a man on third
and the score tied 7-7, In the Pink
needed only a sacrifice fly to win
the game. But an infield pop-up
and a sensational diving eaten by
Spirits' left fielder Tracy Daley
sent the game into extra innings.
Neither team scored again
until the eleventh when Daley
smacked a three-run homer to
break the game open.
Tracy had a hell of a game”
Spirits’ pitcher Joey Ashcrall
said. “He was our savior today."
Daniel said In the Pink wasn't
on top of its game Monday, but
made no excuses for the loss.
‘They hit, and we didn't, and
when you don’t hit in softball, you
lose," Daniel said. “We came out
flat, but in the long run 1 think
the loss will help us keep our
minds on what we have to do."
The qualifying tournament is
separate from the University’s
intramural schedule and has no
effect on the rankings. Spirits, In
the Pink, and the Easton Express
were the top finishers in the
tourney and will represent the
University at the state
championships.
As with Two Days’ loss, de
fensive miscues also led the
Shimmers’ 10-6 loss to Genuine
Draft.
“We just didn’t play our game,"
Jeff Bagwell, coach of the Shim
mers, said “We made a lot of mis
takes, and we deserved to lose.”
The Stammers had to play the
game without hard-hitting snort-
stop Julie McConnell who suf
fered an ankle injury about four
hours before game time.
“We need to get her back,”
Bagwell said.

Mixed reactions about 90s NCAAs new site
By RANDY WALKER

ATLANTA — Sentiment about
the site change for the 1990 NCAA
Men’s Tennis Championships is
not limited to the college tennis
world.
At Inst week’s AT&T Challenge
at the Horseshoe Bend Country
Club, top tour professionals voiced
their opinions on the change of
venue of the 1990 NCAAs from the
University of Georgia to the Hyatt
Grand Champions Resort in Indian
Wells, Calif.
Tin not ngainst moving the
tournament because it is a natural
advantage for one team to be
playing at home all the time, but I
think they should have moved it to
another college campus," said Tim
Mayotte, currently ranked No. 13
on the Association of Tennis Pro
fessionals computer.
Mayotte, who won the 1981
NCAA singles championship in
Athens while playing for Stanford,
doesn’t believe the Indian Wells re
sort will be capable of matching
Georgia’s great crowd support or
the aura Henry Feild Stadium cre
ated during the tournament’s 14-
year stint in Athens.
“It was a big mistake to move it
to n resort," Mayotte said. “I just
don’t think (Indian Wells) is going
to have the crowd support that
they got at Georgia. Indian Wells is
a winter resort, so there ore not
that many people living there. It
just doesn’t have the feeling for col
lege athletics.”
One of the main reasons for
moving the tournament away from
Athens wns based on coaches’ com
plaints that Georgia had an unfair

advantage playing on their home
courts in front of a boisterous
crowd.
“I’ve heard a lot of bad tilings
about the funs over there at
Georgia during the NCAAs,” said
Andre Agassi, a finalist at this
year’s Newsweek Grand Cham
pions tournament held at Indian
Wells. “I’ve really enjoyed playing
nt Indian Wells. It's a beautiful,
beautiful resort."
But while the California desert
resort may be one of the prettiest
in the nation, Mayotte believes the
conditions are not conducive for a
college tournament.
“It’s a beautiful resort, but one
thing is that it’s probably one of the
hottest places in the country this
time of year,” Mayotte said. “It will
probably be over 100 degrees ev
eryday for sure."
Both Mayotte and Brad Gilbert,
u former Pepperdine standout now
ranked No. 5 in the world, ex
pressed fondness for the Georgia
facility and commended the job
done by coach Dan Mugill in run
ning the NCAAs so flawlessly.
'The University of Georgia was
n great place for the NCAAs to be,"
said Gilbert. “But (moving the
tournament) is just a change in the
weather."
Said Mayotte, "Some of the best
times in my tennis life were at
Georgia.”
