Rock your socks off at
By NOAH ARCENEAUX

If asked to name the American
contribution to the world music
scene, serious art critics might
refer to jazz, a uniquely American
sound.
But for my money, rock-n-roll is
where the action is. This style of
music, which resembles pure juve
nile hysteria when properly per
formed, has provided the backbeat
for much of American culture.
Rock stars have always been
able to draw crowds, and it didn’t
take long for filmmakers to catch
on They saw the money in putting
rock-n-rollers into films. Even if
the film was a real stinkeroo, at
least the rock star’s fans would
shell out the money to see their idol
do his thing.
Two such early rock-n-roll films
were ‘The Girl Can’t Help It” and
“Rock, Rock, Rock,” both released
in 1956. The plots of these films are
secondary to the musical perfor
mances, provided by the likes of
Little Richard, Chuck Berry and
Gene Vincent. Who needs to watch

Legion concert is canceled
A little rain goes a long way,
especially when outdoor concerts
are involved. Unfortunately,
Wednesday night’s scheduled
Little Feat A.R.S. concert at Le
gion Field fell victim to showers
and was canceled.
Sources from the University
Union’s Contemporary Concerts
division said that ConcerUSou-
them Promotions canceled be
cause Thursday is a travel day
for the band. In order to play, LF
would’ve had to postpone another
date in Ann Arbor, Mich., which
they couldn’t afford to do.
Fortunately, the Union didn’t
lose a substantial amount of
money because the company sub
sidized student tickets, which
will be refunded. Concert/Sou-
them Promotions will reimburse
the Union for money spent on ad
vertising on campus and in the
Athens area.
Tickets will be refunded at the
lace of purchase. At press time,
ittle Feat had not rescheduled a
future concert date.

the movies
"La Bamba” when one can see the
original creators strut their stuff in
movies like these?
Alan Freed, the disc jockey gen
erally credited with coining the
phrase “rock-n-roll," had a major
role in “Rock, Rock, Rock.” Freed
also appeared in the 1959 film “Go,
Johnny, Go!" along with a very
young Tuesday Weld. If you’re in
terested in the early days of rock-n-
roll, these films are strongly rec
ommended.
Jumping on the bandwagon, no
toriously bad filmmaker Arch Hall,
Sr. npped off these rock-n-roll
flicks in his early 60s film “Wild
Guitar.” This movie features the
w retched acting of Arch Hall, Jr. —
notice the similarity of names. The
story revolves around Bud Engle,
an aspiring rock star. A sleazy Hol
lywood agent takes advantage of
Bud, and thus a typical rock-n-roll
story follows. The most obvious
flaw in this film is the complete
lack of memorable songs. If you
check out this hilariously bad film
you can hear the forgettable Bud
Eagle tune, ‘Twist Fever,” and
many more just as delightful.
“Wild Guitar” is available on the
Rhino Video label, the same folks
who brought you the Monkees and
Richie Valens long before these
artists were cool again. Now
they’ve turned their attention to
films. Another title on Rhino Video
is ‘The Violent Years.”
This film was scripted by Ed
Wood, Jr., the creator of the im
mortal “Plan 9 From Outer Space.”
This Rhino release hardly matches
the genius of “Plan 9,” but is worth
watching. It tells the tragic story of
an all-girl gang that gives new
meaning to the word trouble. If
you’re a fan of Ed Wood, or if you
just want to see a movie about an
all-girl gang, then give this 1956
film your attention.
“Wild Guitar” is available from
the Wuxtry on Baxter Street and
the other Rhino releases are avail
able at The Stop on Broad Street. If
you want to see any of the early
rock-n-roll films, check out Block
buster.

Storyteller, folk singer Prine
plays tonight at Ga. Theatre
By COLEEN BROOKS
Entertainment Writer
Tonight at the Georgia
Theatre the Athens Folk Music
and Dance Society will present
John Prine, one of America’s best
loved storytelling folk singers.
Prine is a folk musician in the
vein of Arlo Guthrie nnd Bob
Dylan. In the years since his
public debut on an “open mic”
night at a bar in his hometown,
Prine hns carved a niche for him
self in the music world. After
eight successful albums, he has
established himself as both a so
cial commentator nnd a cham
pion of the common man.
Many of his songs have a mes
sage or a moral that is served up
in a straightforward and matter
of fact manner. Prine views the
world with an unfliching eye and
communicates his responses to it
in a humorous and sometimes de
ceptively subtle way.
His raspy voice, full of honest
intensity, emphasizes Prine’s
open concern for humanity. His
acoustic focus highlights the sim
plicity and directness of his ly
rical scope.
Prine’s songs are filled with
vividly sketched characters
based on people he encountered
during his childhood days in
Maywood, 111. and in the years
since then.
One of the songs on Prine’s
new live album is “Come Back To
Us Barbara Lewis Hare Krishna
Beauregard” that, according to
the lyric sheet, details “this girl
who left home, did drugs, did reli
gion, did husbands and ended up
doing diddley.”
Some of Prine’s tunes have
been covered by artists including
Bette Midler, Johnny Cash and
Tammy Wynette. One very spe
cial treat on “John Prine Live* is
“Angel from Montgomery,” a duet
John Prine: Social commentator and champion of the
common man brings his guitar to town tonight
with Grninmy-winning songs
tress Bonnie Raitt.
Judging from the perfor
mances on his new live album,
Prine’s show tonight is sure to be
entertaining.
According to Prine,“These
songs are meant to be sung for
and appreciated by people. Live
is when these songs com© into
their own — they take on other
dimensions and colors.”
Tickets are $10 for the general
public and $9 for Athens Folk
Music and Dance Society mem
bers and are available at Wuxtry
and Downtown Records. The
show starts at 10 p.m.
These people have each won 2 free passes to a local theatre.
Next time, it could be you!
