Confident Schefflin ready for NCAA tournament, professional circuit
By RANDY WALKER
Sports Writer
You don’t need to look at a
scoreboard to tell if Stacey Schef
flin is winning n tennis match. Just
look at her ponytail.
When in control of matches, the
senior from Charlotte, N.C. can be
found strutting around the court in
between points with her tightly-
knotted ponytail flapping behind
her head.
"It comes when I’m feeling confi
dent, and when I’m on a roll of hit
ting good shots, ” Schefflin said.
‘The momentum builds and I hit a
string of good shots. It’s psycholog
ical."
Schefflin, a two-time All-Amer
ican, will play at No. 2 singles
today as the fifth-seeded Georgia
women’s tennis team takes on Ok
lahoma St. in the opening round of
the NCAA Team Tournament in
Gainesville, Fla.
In her days at Georgin, Schef
Bin’s ponytail has been bouncing
quite frequently as she has
amassed an impressive 129-39 sin
gles record as a Bulldog.
In 1987, Schefflin was one of the
main ingredients in Georgia’s
NCAA finalist squad, playing No. 4
singles.
But since thnt successful year as
a frosh, Schefflin has added more
facets that have made her a more
complete and confident player.
“She’s progressed and added
new parts to her game,” Georgia
coach JefT Wallace said. “She’s got
better court sense, and she’s more
consistent in winning matches.”
Said Schefflin,“When I go on the
court now, I expect to win more,
while os a freshman, I tried to be
lieve that I could win. JefT has

Schefflin, the third-highest
ranked senior in the nation (No. 9
in the Volvo Tennis Rankings), has
high aspirations for the pro tour
once she completes her degree this
spring.
“I’m really excited about the
pros,” Schefflin said. "It is a dif-
frent phase in my life. I’m ready for
something else."
Like most college players, Schef
flin will begin playing profession
ally from the bottom — the satellite
circuit. After playing $25,000 tour
naments, Schefflin hopes to gather
up more points on the Women’s In
ternational Tennis Association
computer that will enable her to
enter the bigger tournaments.

Wallace believes Schefflin will
take her knocks as she begins the
pro tour, but is optimistic about
ner future on the circuit.
“She’s not going to come on the
scene and be in the Top 10 right
away. She’s got to stick with it and
in a few years, shell do really

Perhaps if all goes well on the
pro tour, Schefflin’s ponytail will
bounce for many years to come.
