Wanna get ahead In the music Industry? Edgar Strubie, author of
Careers In Music" will discuss making money in the music
business Monday at 7 p.m. at the North P/J auditorium. The
event is hosted by the UGA School of Music.
‘Lawrence of Arabia’
opens today at Tate
rector Martin Scorcese owns the
other). The print certainly didn’t
come cheap at *5000, which is 10
times more than the usual price
the Union pays for movies. How
ever, Cinematic Arts feels the im
portance of this film far outweighs
the financial risk. To emphasize
this, the Tate Theatre has featured
other great films by director David
Lean this week (‘Bridge On the
River Kwai,” *A Passage to India”)
with Lawrence as the capper.
“Lawrence of Arabia^ tells the
story of T.E. Lawrence (Peter
OToole in his first starring role), a
British man in the Middle East
during World War I who comes to
be known as the saviour of Arabia.
The film is concerned primarily
with how Lawrence handles being
a pseudo-Messiah, but it also has a
generous helping of good old-fash
ioned movie action. These dual
layers of adventure and intro
spection are even more enter
taining in the complete, wide
screen edition. Not to mention the
impeccable acting, brilliant writing
and spectacular cinematography
(which will be highly appreciated
in 35 mm).

You've read the posters. You've
seen the man walking around
campus. You've heard all the hype
you can stand. Now, at long last,
it’s time to see the movie.
Today at 3 p.m., the classic mo
tion picture “Lawrence of Arabia”
begins its five-day run at the Tate
Theatre. The Cinematic Arts divi
sion of the University Union
worked overtime to promote the
film, but many students still don't
understand what the big deal is.
It’s just a movie, after all. Why the
hoopla?
The reason it’s such a treat to
have this movie in Athens is that
the version being shown is the
uncut, original 35 mm version,
which was first shown publically
last year when it played select
cinema houses around the country.
The closest it came to Athens
was Atlanta, where it played for
about a month and received pa
tronage from road-tripping, film fa
natic Athenians.
UGA’s copy is one of only two 35
mm prints in existence (film di-
Omar and Pete: The handsome stars of David Lean's classic film,'
at the Tate Center Theater. The screen masterpiece is four hours

long, but worth every minute
‘Lawrence of Arabia’ a true epic
REVIEW
By ANDREW LAWLER
Entertainment Writer
One of the greatest movie expe
riences of all time is rolling
through Athens. The lovingly re
stored, digitally remastered “Law
rence of Arabia" plays at the Tate
Center from the 11th through the
15th.
Most of us will see the great
epics only on the late show or on
our VCRs. However, films like
“Spartacus," “Gone With The
Wind" and “Lawrence" can only
truly be appreciated on the big
screen. Athens is getting a rare
treat.
“Lawrence of Arabia” tells the
story of an enigmatic young British
officer (Peter OToole) who unites
the Arabs in a war against the
Turks.
In the process he becomes a
figure of almost biblical propor
tions. He finds much in common
with the nomadic, honor-bound
tribes — so much that he begins to
have trouble living with himself.
The film is told against the back
drop of WWI Arabia and features
brilliant performances by Alec Gui-
ness, Omar Sharif, Jose Ferrer and
Claude Rains.
What raises “Lawrence" to the
level of a classic is the fact that ev
erything works brilliantly in this
film. The performances are uni
formly incredible, the direction is
seamless and ranges from the epic
to the intimate with the same ef
fortless grace. The cinematography
Lawrence of Arabia’ is
the story of a young
British officer who
unites the Arabs in a
war against the Turks.
is perhaps the most stunning ever
filmed. The musical score soars
and plummets with both bravado
and subtlety.
The remastered print offers us
new scenes and new insights into
the story and its characters. Far
from being an attempt to throw in
scenes that were justifiably left out
in the editing process, the new
print restores director David
Lean’s original film in which whole
scenes (such as a whole battle in
the latter half of the film) were
hacked out by the film’s distribu
tors.
“Lawrence of Arabia” is epic in
every meaning of the word. Go see
it. We won’t see its like soon again.
The movie is four hours long
with an intermission, just like it
used to be, and is a guaranteed
good time. Tickets are three dollars
for each show, which breaks down
to about seventy-five cents an
hour. Where else can one find this
level of quality entertainment for
seventy-five cents an hour? Most
current releases cost about $3.50
an hour, and they’re nowhere near
as big as this baby.
So come on down to the Tate
Theatre Friday through Tuesday
at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. for a taste of
moviemaking the way they used to
do it — on a grand scale. Don’t let
this special event pass you by.
