Track Dogs win big at meet
Peter Fray.
By TREVOR PADGETT
Sports Editor
Jennifer Pine finished first —
and last — in the women’s high
jump this past weekend at the Spec
Towns Invitational. She was the
only entry in the event.
That about sums up how things
went at the measles-depleted track
meet in Athens. An order by the
State Department of Health re
quiring all incoming teams be inoc
ulated warded off several teams, as
only a handful of the over twenty
invited teams showed.
This made for a practically all-
Georgia affair, but tnat didn’t take
away from the Track Dogs’ compet
itive spirit, according to their
coach.
"We got after it pretty good,”
:aid coach John Mitchell. “We’re as
good as we can be at this point.”
The Dogs’ competitiveness and
lack of competitors was most evi
dent in the results.
Georgia track members placed
third or higher in 25 of tne 35
men’s and women’s events, in
cluding 1-2 finishes in eight of
those events.

“It was a real positive meet,”
said Mitchell. “A lot of our kids got
in some good times.”
Aside from Fine, other first-
place finishers for the Lady Dogs
were: Jolly Earle, 1500 meters;
Dana Shivalier, 400 meters;
Kathry n Krieger, 800 meters; Keli
Butler, 3000 meters; and Camille
Bell, 100 meters (2nd heat).
Finishing first for the men were:
George Putmon, 200 meters;
Ronnie Coleman, 200 meters (2nd
heat); Sean Longer, 1500 meters;
and Randy Bell, 400 meters.
The Dogs continue preparation
this week for the SEC
Championships to be held at the
Spec Towns Track beginning
Thursday and running through
Sunday.
Mitchell said his team is ready.
‘We’re on the top of our game
right now,” said Mitchell. We have
Randy Bell: First-place
finish in the 400 meters
the home track advantage and I
think we will definitely contend for
the title.”
Dogs lose 3 to LSU;
No. 2 seed in tourney
By ERIC GARBER
Sports Writer
Three times the Georgia base
ball team had chances to earn at
least a tie for the SEC regular
season championship this past
weekend in Baton Rouge. And
three times, the Diamond Dogs fell
short.
Needing just one win to earn a
share and two to be the outright
champ of the conference, the Dogs
were shut down by Louisiana State
University, losing both ends of a
doubleheader Saturday 11-2 and 5-
2, and falling Sunday 8-5.
Georgia is now 44-15 overall, 18-
9 in the SEC, and finishes the reg
ular season two games behind LSU
(20-7, 44-15 overall).
“I threw a few bad pitches today,
real bad pitches,” said Dave
Fleming (10-3, 3.17 ERA), the
losing pitcher in Saturday’s first
game.
“We can’t let something like this
get us down. We have a lot of base
ball left,” he said.
Even though the lOth-ranked
Dogs were humbled in Baton
Rouge, the team’s second-place
finish earns it the second seed in
the conference tournament, which
begins Thursday in Hoover, Ala.
Georgia is slated to play in the
tournament’s first game against
Vanderbilt at 1 p.m. Eastern time.
The Commodores are the only
SEC team besides LSU to take at
least two of three from the Bull
dogs this season.
“Vanderbilt took two from us
earlier and probably should have
taken all three,” said Georgia DH
Brian Jester, whose average fell to
.392 afler he went one for 11 in the
LSU series.
We’ve just got to approach the
tournament like we have every
game this year and play like we
can,” he said.
The two other losing pitchers for
Georgia were Mike Rebhan (10-4,
3.45 ERA) and Stan Payne (5-1,
4.67).
Jester said that the enormous
fan turnout in Baton Rouge, about
5,000 each game, rattled his per
formance and made it tougher for
him to get into a groove.
“Every pitch, I mean every pitch,
drew roars from the crowd. Jester
said.
“It’s a great credit to the LSU
fans and program. They were
great,” he said.
Said Georgia coach Steve
Webber about the LSU series and
the upcoming tournament, We
played hard, we just came up short
this weekend. As far as how that
puts us in the tournament, I really
don’t put much stock in seedings.”
Jeff Cooper, J.R. Showalter and
Jester, Georgia’s two, three, and
four hitters, accounted for only
four hits in the three games
against the Tigers.
Still, the coaches are confident
that the power of the bat will re
surface for the tournament.
“No, I’m not worried about those
guys,” assistant coach Jim Bagnall
said. “The offense is OK.”
If Georgia can beat Vanderbilt,
it plays the loser of the Auburn-
Mississippi State first-round game.
