“We played really solid," Mc

Glitz - hit the ball really hard but
made n lot of errors. They came

they’d miss two shots for every

we can return better and we can
get on top of them early."
Georgia coach Jeff Wallace

Dogs expected to seed high in NCAA tourney
By ERIC GARBER

Louisiana State baseball coach
Skip Bert man said Tuesday that
the six team SEC tournament field
is more competitive than any tour
nament group the NCAA could put
together for regional play.
The Tigers, who face Florida in
the first round of the conference
tournament Thursday at Hoover
Metropolitan Stadium in Hoover,
Ala., earned the tourney’s first
seed after sweeping three games
from Georgia this past weekend to
win the regular season title.
The SEC six are stronger than
any group of six tennis around,”
Bertmun said in n teleconference.
"I think that if we can win the con
ference tournament, we have a
good shot at getting n high seed in
the NCAA Tournament.”
Barring a conference tourna
ment disaster, Georgia is expected
to earn the second seed in the
NCAA’s Northeast or Southeast
Regional held in Waterbury,
Conn., and Miami, Fin., said Jim
Callis, assistant editor of Baseball
America.
Ever if 10th ranked Georgia
doesn’t win a game in the double
elimination conference tourna
ment, the team is virtually guar
anteed a spot somewhere in the
NCAA tournament.
“Oh they’re in," Callis said.
‘They (Georgia) should get a good
seed.”
The Diamond Dogs (44-15, 18-9
in the SEC) go into the tournament
on a slight skid. Georgia has lost

no more than two straight before
the LSU series.
“We’ve had a rough couple of

"We’ve played a tough schedule,”
he added. “We know what we are
playing for. W’ell bounce back."
Georgia plays in the tourna
ment’s first game nt 1 p.m. Eastern
time agninst Vanderbilt (26-28, 12
13 in the SEC), who took two of
three from the Dogs earlier in the
season.
If the Dogs can get by Vandy, it
must face the loser of the Auburn-
Mississippi State game.
Dave Fleming, 10-3 with a 3.17
ERA, was a 5-1 loeer to the Com
modores March 31. Fleming will
face Jo Jo Smith (8-3, 2.64 ERA),
who was on the winning end of
Vandy’s 7-2 victory against
Georgia.
“We happened to have one of our
better senes of the year," Vandy
assistant conch Gary Bums said of
the Georgia-Vnndy series played in
Nashville. “We were very proud to
beat such a good hitting team.
However, I think they had an off
series. I think Fleming threw the
worst game of his career against
us. Georgia is a great team and
we’ve got to be ready."
Said Bertman, “Anyone can win
this thing. With Auburn making
the run it did Inst year to win the
tournament championship, it
seems that you can’t be sure about
anything."
