Jordan gives boy hope for future
What I'll remember meet about the NBA playoffs
won’t be something you’ll see on the highlight films.
HI remember the day Michael Jordan showed the
nation, and one little boy in particular, what being a
sports hero is all about.
It was a moment when the High Flying One made
a spectacualr human highlight — and he didn’t even
have his hands on the ball. I don’t remember the
number of the game The game itself didn’t matter.
But that’s getting ahead of the story.
Before the Chicago/Milwaukee senes, Jordan took
time out to visit a 10-year-old boy. The young Chi
cagoan went blind after a drug-related, drive-by
shooting sent a bullet through his home and into his
sleeping head.
Professional help and parental love could only do
so much to help the boy deal with the tragedy. Un
derstandably, he felt helpless and depressed. If he
understood at that age what life was all about, he
likely felt he had nothing to live for ... nothing to
hope for or believe in.
Jordan’s visit gave the boy a brief moment of hap
piness — his parents said it was the first time he had
smiled since the shooting. Great tickets to the game
helped a little more. There his hero was, if only in
audio. (His parents gave him the play-by-play.)
And then disaster struck again. Jordan moved to
the hoop and floated through the “Air Michael” zone
in which he made his living. But to the horror of
every true basketball fan, Milwaukee didn’t clear his
flight for landing.
Jordan’s prostrate body hit the hardwood with a
thud.
The crowd looked down in an eerie silence, as if it
were watching a funeral, and Jordan’s lifeless-
looking body could easily have been taken for a
corpse —especially if you’re a little boy who lives and
breathes Michael Jordan.
While the commentators babbled and the replays
Chris
Lancette
ran, I couldn’t stop thinking about the panic the boy
must have been feeling. If Jordan — his hero — could
be knocked down by forces larger than himself, what
chance did a little blind boy have of recovery?
I felt Jordan’s thoughts, too. Consciously, he was
hurt and knew he couldn’t stay down if the Bulls
were to win. But it’s the subconscious that’s impor
tant.
In the dazed Jordan mind, I felt Jordan telling
himself the kid was out there watching him. I could
almost see him recognize, while he lay sprawled on
the floor, that if he didn’t get back in the game a boy’s
heart would be broken.
A boy’s motivation to persevere would be de
stroyed forever.
I could also see human nature telling Jordan to
say the hell with it and give up; no game is important
enough to try to come back after a beating like that.
Then the cameras cut away from him, leaving the
question of his fate unanswered.
They returned a moment later to show an upright
Jordan walking from the sideline to the court. I felt
tears in my eyes as I witnessed his resurrection.
Jordan was just fine thanks, and the boy saw
reason to live.

Dogs go north for NCAA regional
By ERIC GARBER
Sports Writer
Traveling hundreds of miles to
Connecticut for the NCAA North
east Regional may seem like a big
pain for the Georgia baseball team.
But is it really?
Consider this. Eight Diamond
Dogs, four of whom are seniors, are
natives to the Northern region of
the country.
"Heck, a lot of us are from up
there anyway,” said senior desig
nated hitter Brian Jester, origi
nally from Endicott, N.Y. “We
should have a ton of family mem
bers up there supporting us and
that gives us more incentive to
win."
The regional’s second-seeded
Dogs (44-17) face fifth-seeded Con
necticut (27-17-1) in the first round
in Waturbury, Conn., tonight at 7.
If Georgia gets by the Huskies, it
will face the winner of the Iowa-
Maine contest, the No. 3 and 4
seeds, respectively. The tourney is
double elimination.
Left-handed pitcher Dave
Fleming, who went to the same
high school as Connecticut pitcher
Four Diamond Dogs
are natives of the
North.
Dave Fradkin (1-1), is one of three
Georgia juniors from the North.
Fleming (10-4, 3.25 ERA), from
Mahopac, N.Y., will try to bounce
back from consecutive losses
against Louisiana State and Van
derbilt as Georgia’s starter today.
Connecticut will most likely
counter with Jason Fronio (7-1,
2.18 ERA).
“It’s a fresh start for us in Wa-
terbury,” said Georgia coach Steve
Webber as he reflected on his
team’s five-game skid. “Our hitters
are anxious to get back.”
Among other Georgia seniors
from Northern states are pitchers
Matt Hoitsma, from Wayne, N.J.,
Ray Kirschner, from Brooklawn,
NJ., and Joe Kelly from Whites-
boro, N.Y.
Other junior snowbirds included
first baseman Doug Radziewicz,
from Somerville, N.J., and pitcher
Joe Bodvake, from Canonsburg,
Pa.
The lone Northern sophomore
for Georgia is pitcher Steve DeB-
lasi, out of Holmdel, NJ.
Diamond Dog Bruce Chick: The junior rightfielder winds
up to fire one home.
The fact that many of the Dogs
spent most of their lives in frosty
climates has coaches and players
confident about the team’s
chances. Today’s game time tem
perature is expected to be in the
low to mid 50s.
“I think that because many of us
used to play up North, we will be
better ofT,” Jester said. “We are
going up there to represent the
University of Georgia and we’re
proud of that. We won’t be intim
idated by anything."
Jester leads Georgia with 15
round-trippers but hasn’t hit one
since May 1. He is batting .387 and
has 55 RBI. J.R. Showalter leads
the team with 64 RBI.
For Connecticut to win, it will
have to find a way to counter
Georgia’s offensive power. The
Dogs led the SEC this season with
79 homers, compared to the
Huskies’ 18.
Connecticut is led offensively by
outfielder Sal Tinnerello, who is
batting .386 and leads the team
with five home runs.
The Diamond Dogs have lost
eight of their last 11 games and
hasn’t won two straight since they
took two of three from Mississippi
State in Starkville April 28 and 29.
Diamond Dog Doings: Of the
five teams besides Georgia in the
regional bracket, the only one the
Dogs have faced is first-seeded
North Carolina. Georgia leads the
all-time series with UNC 18-16-2.
The Tarheels play sixth-seeded
Rutgers at noon today... Coach
Steve Webber still needs nine wins
to tie Jim Whatley for the Georgia
record for coaching wins. The re
cord stands at 334. The game will
be broadcast live on WRFC begin
ning at 7 p.m.
