Smith leads Diamond Dogs to 2nd World Series
By ERIC QARBER
Sports Writer
What a difference a lead-off
hitter makes.
It seems more than just coin
cidence that when center fielder
McKay Smith went 10 for 43
(.232) in an 11-game span aarliar
in the season, the Georgia base
ball team was 3-8.
After all, going into the Loui
siana State series three weeks
ago, Smith was batting .310 and
Smith feels his team
will be more comfort
able this time around.

the Dogs had won 19 out of their
last 24 games.
Fortunately for Georgia, the
senior is back just in tims for the
team to leave for its second Col
lege World Series, which begins
this Friday in Omaha, Neb.
Georgia'* last CWS appearance
was in 1987, when the team fin
ished seventh.
Although the eight team field
was completed when the Citadel
upset Miami Tuesday to become
the last team to enter, the NCAA
will wait until today to announce
the bracket seeds.
The other teams in the CWS
are Georgia Southern, Missis
sippi State, LSU, Oklahoma
State, Stanford, and Cal. State
Fullerton.
“I didn’t really do anything to
get out of my slump,” Smith said.
“I was making good cuts, I just
got a few tough breaks. This is an
exciting time.”
In Georgia's last seven games,
including the five the Dogs par
ticipated in to win the NCAA
Northeast Regional in Water-
bury, Conn., this past weekend.
Smith went 10 for 22 (.450) and
scored eight runs. In addition,
the Glen Ellyn, III., native hit five
doubles. Before that span, he
hadn’t hit a two-bagger since
May 1.
"Oh yeah, it’B good to have
McKay hitting,” Georgia coach
Steve Webber said. "He’s the
lead-off batter and it’s crucial to
get the lead-off man on so guys
can knock him in.”
Smith, who saw limited action
on Georgia’s 1987 CWS team,
feats his team will be more com
fortable this time around.
"We were just excited to be
there in ’87,” Smith said. "This
time with me being a senior, to
win it would be sweeter. We’ve
got the experience.
“I think that the older guys
who have been in this situation
before have done a good job
helping the younger players
handle the emotion, he said.
The older guys Smith refers to
are 1987 team members Jeff
Cooper, Matt Hoitsma, Brian
Jester, and Joe Kelly. Smith
played in 29 games that year and
batted .265.
The team will leave tom-
morrow afternoon and fly to Chi
cago, where it will catch a flight
to Omaha.
“At this point, all that travel
shouldn’t make a difference.”
Smith said. "We are playing well
and that’s important. •
