UGA literary magazine available now

The 1990 edition of “Stillpoint,”
the literary magazine of the Uni
versity of Georgia, has been pub
lished and is now available at
various spots in Athens.
The pages of the publication are
filled with 31 works, including va
rious poems, short stories, photo
graphs and art which were chosen
from a pool of more than 200 sub
missions.
The magazine, started in 1966,
is sponsored by the English De
partment.Although “Stillpoint”
was formerly looked upon as
strictly an undergraduate mag
azine, graduate students also con
tribute to the pages of the
magazine.
Best of year’
Dr. Hugh Ruppersburg, asso
ciate professor of English and a
former faculty adviser for the mag
azine, said, “The magazine was in
tended to encourage students to be
interested in creative writing and
get together to discuss each others’
works. It’s supposed to highlight
the best of the year,” he said.
The publication is produced by a
staff of undergraduate students
who begin working during fall
quarter to produce the annual
spring issue.The students select
which works to include in “Stil
lpoint" and also design the layout
of the magazine.
Tony Grooms, the current fac
ulty adviser for “Stillpoint,” helps
the students out, but, he said, “I
don’t dictate to the students the
standards of good literature.
“I do suggest that there’s a head
honcho on the editorial staff. Ex
actly how that’s set up is left to the
editor,” he said.
“All of the editors voiced our
opinions on the submissions. Ba
sically the ones that received major
support are the ones we picked,”
said the magazine’s chiel editor,
Paul Hand.
“1 was hoping for some off-the-
wall entries. We received fiction,
art and photography.
"An original translation or an in
terview would also have been fine,”
he said.
“Stillpoint” receives very little fi
nancial assistance from student ac
tivities fees.
“Compared to other colleges’ lit
erary magazine funds, there’s not
much financial assistance from the
student activities program," said
Grooms. “The English Department
this year helped by giving a large
deal of money, but not enough to
produce a copy for each student,”
he said.
High quality
While other literary publications
such as “The Blue Plate Special”
and “Resin” can be found around
Athens, “Stillpoint” is the only one
which draws from students only.
“We got about 200 submissions
from all over campus, not just from
presents

English majors. We hope that
people outside the English depart
ment are reading it," said Grooms.
“It’s a service for the student
population,” he said.
“In terms of literary quality, lit
erary magazines like 'Blue Plate’
and ‘Stillpoint’ are comparable,” he
said.
“Because ‘Blue Plate’ draws
from people in and outside of the
Athens community, its literary
quality might be a little better,” he
added.
“ ‘Stillpoint’ is still very impor
tant, for it’s a place where students
can get published. Those who
never dreamt of sending things off
to publishers can be a part of the
process.
“Most importantly, it gives sub
stance to our literary community.
The literary community among the
campus is incredible.
“In the two years that I’ve been
here I’ve been amazed. There’s all
kinds of literary things going on
here. It’s amateurish, but that’s
what you expect,” he said.
