Georgia and Stanford
meet again in CWS
By ERIC GARBER
Sports Writer
For Stanford pitcher Brian Sack-
insky, it was a nightmare turned
into a dream come true.
Upon arrival at Rosenblatt Sta
dium in Omaha, Neb., for his
team’s do or die College World Se
ries rematch against Georgia
Wednesday night, the freshman
learned that a rib injury to original
starter and All-American Stan
Spencer had caused coach Mark
Marquess to assign Sackinsky the
starting duties.
It looked like the Georgia base
ball team, who roughed up Sack
insky for five runs in one-third of
an inning in Sunday’s game, was in
business.
However after allowing the Di
amond Dogs (50-19) to score two
runs in the first inning on four sin
gles, Sackinsky shut the Dogs
down while getting enough help
from his teammates to pitch a com
plete game and pick up his 10th
win 4-2.
The win forces the two teams to
meet again today. If Oklahoma
State (55-16) defeated Louisiana
State (54-18) last night in the other
bracket, Georgia plays Stanford
'59-11) today at 8:37 p.m. EST,
with the winner going to Satur
day’s national championship game.
If the Cowboys lost, Georgia meets
Stanford today at 5:07 p.m. EST
and OSU and LSU will play at 8:37
p.m. EST.
Regardless of how many games
the championship teams have lost
in what up to now has been a
double elimination tournament,
the chamionship will be just one
game. It will be televised Saturday
at 2 p.m. EST by CBS .
“What bracket position you’re in
here means nothing,” Georgia
coach Steve Webber said. “Stan
ford won the national
championship last year. We know
we have to be ready.”
After Stanford managed to tie
the score 2-2 off Georgia starter
Dave Fleming in the seventh on a
run-scoring infield hit with one
out, freshman Jeff Hammonds hit
a two-run single passed third
baseman Jeff Cooper to score Tim
Griffin and Roger Burnett, giving
the Cardinal a 4-2 lead.
That’s all Sackinski (10-1)
needed as he allowed just one hit
en route to holding the Dogs
scoreless the next three innings.
“We just started to swing at bad
itches,” Georgia second baseman
oey Alfonso said. "We didn’t play
that badly. Fleming pitched well
and we played good defense."
Though he didn’t pitch a 3-0
shutout like he did against Missis
sippi State in the series’ first
round, Fleming gave up just six
hits and held the Cardinal
scoreless in sixth of the eight in
nings he pitched.
With Georgia up 2-1 in the sev
enth and the bases full of Stanford
runners, partly because of a walk
and hit batter, Fleming forced
Mike Eicher to tap the ball in front
of the plate. The lefthander
couldn’t get to it in time and Troy
Tallman scored. Then came Ham
monds’ hit.
‘That’s just the way it happens,”
Alfonso said. “Sure we got a few
tough breaks. Well just have to
keep playing tough defense and
come back hard.”
Meanwhile, Sackinsky had
found his mark. At one point, he re
tired 12 straight Bulldog batters.
Sackinski allowed just two hits
after his shaky first inning.
“We’ve been down before,” said
tonight’s Bulldog starter Mike
Rebhan. “If we lose we go home.
It’s that simple.”

Missions accomplished.
The BSU Slammers and In the
Pink went into this year’s intra
mural softball season with one
goal in mind — to win a
championship. Both reached that
goal Wednesday as the Slammers
dumped Damage Inc. 5-2 and In
the Pink slugged Two Days in the
Hole 16-10.
The Slammers (6-1) combined
a tight defense and adequate hit
ting to win the women’s title.
Amy Earnest, Donna Parker,
Leslie Broadwell and Amy Green
scored in the second inning and
Julie McConnell stroked an in
surance home run in the third to
account for the champs’ scoring.
Damage Inc. was cold at the
plate the entire game, waiting
until the last inning to get some
thing started. Sandy Ander and
Jenny Shuck scored to make
things interesting, but that’s
where the rally ended.
‘The girls got busy and did the
job,” BSU coach Jeff Bagwell
said. “They really worked hard
this year. The credit is all theirs.”
The men’s game was a virtual
hit-o-rama as In the Pink scored
in every inning but the fifth to de
throne the defending men’s
champion Two Days.
“We made some mental er
rors,” Two Days’ shortstop Rusty
Carman said. “But you can’t take
anything away from them. They
hit the ball hard.”
As they have at times this
year, In the Pink came out a little
tight in the first. Taking advan
tage of two Pink fielding errors,
Two Days held a 4 1 advantage
at inning’s end.
But then the onslaught l>egan.
Hitting almost everything on a
line, the boys in pink clubbed
home seven in the second and
four more over the next two in
nings to take a 12-4 lead.
“We hit the ball all through the
line up today,” Chris Daniel,
pitcher for In the Pink, said “It
was a total team effort. Every out
that was made was a hard out.”
Down but not done, Two Days
chipped away at the lead, scoring
three in the fourth and two in the
fifth to make it 12-9 with two at-
bats left. But In the Pink added
three big runs in the top of the in
ning ns lead -off man Greg McGla-
mory and Daniel both singled

and scored on a botched Mark
Williamson grounder. Wil
liamson later came home on a
Mark Adams’ sacrifice fly.
In the Pink then went to work
on defense, snuffing out at rallies
in the sixth and seventh with
some fine glove work by Daniel,
third baseman Marshall Lamb
and the shortstop Williamson.
‘This is really great," Daniel
said of the championship win.
“We had great team chemistry
the whole year and accomplished
what we set out to do. I know it’s
only intramurals and all, but it’s
fun to win.”
McGlarnory (4 for-4, 3 runs
scored), Adams (3-for-4 with a
homerun), Lamb ( 3-for-4, 3 runs
scored) and Britt Ingle (3-for-4, 1
run scored) led the offensive ex
plosion for the winners.
John Costello went 3-for-4,
Rob Weeks went 2-for-3 and Mike
Sanders, TimoTreilobs and Mike
Pisani each went 2-for-4 to lead
the way for Two Days.
