Student concertgoers review
1990’s best shows (so far)
By MAURA CORRIGAN
Entertainment Writer
Half of 1990 has already passed
and many memorable perfor
mances have happened, from local
band shows in Athens to major
names headlining for sold-out
crowds in Atlanta.
The Grateful Dead played three
snows at the Omni during Spring
Quarter drop-add. The Violent
Femmes also played at the Georgia
Theatre on two of those nights.
Paul McCartney played two nights
at the Omni in February, and
fellow Brit Robyn Hitchcock per
formed two nights at the 40 Watt
in early May.
Of all the groups that have come
in and out of town, there’s been a
wide offering from big, small, old
and new performers of both local
and worldwide fame. Many Uni
versity students have attended
these shows, and these were some
of their favorites:
Seana Cooney, sophomore pre
journalism major, had the most fun
seeing Walk the West at the
Georgia Theatre in early March.
The band from Nashville, Ten
nessee has been around for about
five years. Seana said, “They're my
favorite band ever. I went to a re
cord store in Minneapolis in the
10th grade, picked up a tape, and
have listened to them ever since.
I’m totally in a trance when Fm
watching them."
David Miller, freshman unde
cided major, said the most mem
orable concert he’s been to this
year was the Yes reunion called the
“Anderson Bruford Wakeman
Howe” show The former Yes-men
played in New York’s Madison
Square Garden in March. Miller
said,The gig was a flashback into
the psychedelic era. The blending
of sight and sound was a delight to
the senses. Throughout the pro
gram each artist demonstrated his
ability in an expressionists solo
combining the staccato style of
Howe’s guitar and Wakeman’s syn
thesizer fugue, which really
tripped me out. Wow!!"
Amy Ellington, sophomore
music therapy major, has enjoyed
seeing local band Skin Deep per
form on various occasions. TheyYe
musically talented, socially aware
and fun,” she said.
Rafael Batine, sophomore pho
tography major, was awed by Si
nead O’Connor’s performance at
the Fox on May 1. “She was really
into her music. She wasn’t just
singing the words, she was feeling;
she was singing from her soul,” he
said.
Derek Keller, freshman music
Of all the groups that
have come In and out of
town, there’s been a
wide offering
education/composition major with
concentration in the classical
guitar, saw former member of
Kansas and the Dixie Dregs Steve
Morse perform at the Georgia
Theatre in early April. “It was the
most creatively inspiring show I’ve
seen,” Keller said.
Kristy Lanier, freshman photo
graphic design major, was mostly
amused when she saw local band
Balrog at Club Fred and the 40
Watt. “It wasn’t what I expected. I
know the lead singer AJex and
what he does up on stage is not
what he’s like at work. It was inter
esting and very entertaining. It’s
something you definitely have to
witness to be able to appreciate."
With the multitudes of shows
that come through this area, this is
only a sampling of what students
have enjoyed this quarter.
Throughout the rest of the year, it
will be interesting to hear other
impressions of the student popula
tion.
