The summer of sequels is here, plus Dick Tracy
By DAVID WI11IAMS
Entertainment Writer
School is almost out and that means it’s summer
movie time. The major Btudios have spent millions of
dollars trying to produce the big hit of the summer.
The studios are almost guaranteed a handsome re
turn on their investments, considering that last
summer the studios made a record $2.1 billion.
One of the big stories this summer is, of course,
“Dick Tracy.”
Dick Tracy, everybody's favorite detective, is sched
uled to jump out of the funny papers and onto the big
screen on June 15 in a big, stylized production which
is expected to out-batman "Batman.”
Warren Beatty plays the famous “dick” and Ma
donna co-stars as Breathless Mahoney.
The marketing for “Dick Tracy” has been intense,
and department stores and movie theaters have been
filled with merchandise and advertisements for
months. Madonna has been one big billboard for the
movie. She wore “Dick Tracy” t-shirts on her tour, her
hit single “Vogue* is being used in the TV commer
cials for the movie and the media is swarming over
stories about her affair with Beatty.
■ MOVIE REVIEW
"Postcards From the Edge” hasn’t had nearly as
much publicity as “Tracy,” but it’s certain to be a
mqjor hit. The adaptation of actress Carrie Fisher’s
best selling autobiography stars Meryl Streep and
features Shirley MacLaine, Gene Hackman, Richard
Dreyfus and Dennis Quaid. It doesn’t open until Sep
tember, so it could be one of the few summer films re
membered when Oscar time rolls around.
The other big story this summer is the same as
every other summer — THE SEQUEL. This summer’s
offerings include: "Young Guns II,” “Gremlins II,”
“Another 48 Hours,”“Robo Cop II,” “Die Hard II: Die
Harder,” “Graffiti Bridge,” the sequel to Prince’s
“Purple Rain” and ‘The Two Jakes,” the sequel to the
classic Jack Nicholson film “Chinatown.” There are
also two Andrew Dice Clay movies which might as
well be sequels, “Ford Fairlane,” and the “Andrew
Dice Clay Concert Movie.”
“Mo’ Better Blues,” Spike Lee’s new film, stars
Denzel Washington, who is fresh off his Oscar win
ning performance in “Glory.”
What a Dick: Warren Beatty takes a bite out of crime as
Dick Tracy, 'everybody's favorite detective'

anyone else could review it. “Ghost
Nation” is one of the most consis
tently good albums that I have
heard this year. The songs are very
well written and the production is
really smooth.

Noel — Just like the old days
when rock gods walked the earth
and delivered their messages on
seven inch slabs, Dinosaur Jr. lays
down a megawow mix of distortion,
hftsal twang and shuffling pop. The
kind of song that knocks a man on
the floor, then apologizes politely
and buys him an ice cream cone.
Like walking in the middle of the
best part of a movie. And that’s just
the first twenty seconds. (****•)

David — This album sucks!!!
This would be an adequate pan for
most records, but in this case it
doesn’t even begin to scratch the
surface. The model turned actress
turned cabaret chanteuse, famous
for her roles in ‘Taxi Driver” and
“Moonlighting” has released a vile
collection of torch songs and show
tunes including a sacreligious
cover of “Ain’t Misbehavin” which
will make you cringe. All in all this
album is a waste of perfectly good
vinyl, which could be better used to
make a Menudo record. (NO
STARS, not even a half)

many positive adjectives come to
mind. These guys are daring and
their album is unreal. Anyone who
has the nerve to cover a song like
English Beat’s “Can’t Get Used To
Losing You” has my respect.
