Chinese water works get UGA help

Staff Writer
Weihe Guan, a doctoral student in the University’s
ecology department, was taught as a child in southern
China not to drink the water. Pollution from indus
tries and chemical fertilizers make the country’s
water unsafe until it’s boiled.
Guan is now working to improve the condition of
water systems in her native country. She and several
University faculty members are working with the
United Nations Department of Technical Cooperation
and Development (UNDTCD), to help the Chinese
government develop a more efficient system to
manage and clean its water supply.
At a time of uncertain political relations between
the United States and China, these people are pro
moting healthier, more efficient water standards to
benefit Chinese citizens.
Ronald North, director of the University’s Institute
of Natural Resources and technical adviser to the pro
ject, said he has noticed only subtle tensions on the
streets of Beijing after student uprisings there. He
