Diamond Dogs’ hindsight
Sweet taste of victory just sinking in
By JON TULLY
Sports Editor
Two weeks after his team won
the first national baseball
championship in Georgia history,
Bulldog head baseball coach Steve
Webber is finally beginning to feel
how sweet it is.
“Well, it’s starting to (sink in),”
Webber said. “It’s a slow process.”
Webber’s Diamond Dogs fin
ished with a record of 52-19,
smashing the school record for vic
tories. Four of those victories came
in the College World Series in
Omaha, Neb., including two over
top-seeded Stanford and, of course,
the one that wrapped it all up, a 2-
1 nailbiter over Oklahoma State.
Webber said he felt terrific after
winning the title, mostly for his
players.
“You feel excitement and happi
ness for the players, because they
put in a lot of hard work,” Webber
said.
Fans could sense that hard work
at the beginning of the season, as
the Diamond Dogs, who had all but
one starting position player re
turning and excellent freshman
prospects coming in, put together
an impressive early record. Their
work put them in the top ten of
both major baseball polls
“I thought we had a good team,
and as the season began to unfold,
I thought we could make it to a re
gional,” Webber said.
But for a little while, it looked
like the Georgia baseball team
wasn’t going to make it very far in
their hunt for a title.
‘I don’t think you can
see the entire impact it
has on your program
until later on. But it can
only have a positive
effect on all parts of
the program.
— Steve Webber,
baseball coach
The Diamond Dogs hit a difficult
stretch at the end of the regular
season, which turned into a disap
pointing showing in the South
eastern Conference tournament, as
they lost their first two games. It
looked like the Bulldogs weren’t
going to get very far in whatever
regional they ended up in.
But they ended up winning the
Northeast Regional in Waterbury,
Conn., which gave them the mo
mentum they needed to vault into
the College World Series and their
first national championship.
Now Webber is looking forward
to having the mantle of “national
champion* attached to his pro
gram, at least for 1990.

tire impact it has on your program

interviews with NBA teams.
And, of course, there was al
ways school.
While most University grad
uates had their hands full with
testa and graduation prepara
tions, Kessler had the added
pressure of impressing NBA
scouts across the country.
During the last two weeks of
the epring quarter, he chalked up
quite a few “frequent flyer” miles,
traveling to interviews with
Golden State, Minnesota, the
Clippers and Atlanta. This
weekend he will visit the Char
lotte Hornets.
“It’s been tough,” Kessler said.
Then again, work ethic is a
subject Kessler should write a
book about. But for all the extra
hours and hard work in addition
to his studies, he enjoyed his last
spring at the University.
“College is a really a unique
lifestyle,” Kessler said. “In a way
I’ve enjoyed every spring quarter
here because it’s a chance to be a
regular Btudent and enjoy
campus life.”
He’s certainly earned it. In ad
dition to becoming the Dogs all-
time leader in points scored,
Kessler graduated summa cum
laude with a 3.91 average in mi
crobiology.
For Kessler academics have al
ways come first. He personifies
the image of the true student-
athlete.
In Orlando this past April, the
NBA held a camp attended by
virtually every top basketball
player eligible for the draft.
Alec Kessler
Kessler opted to skip the camp in
favor of school work. lie did make
an effort though by notifying all
27 NBA teams of his interest in
the league and his reason for not
attending the camp.
For n guy who wasn’t even sure
he could play Division I basket
ball, he’s made a tremendous im
pact at Georgia. Kessler had
originally signed a letter of intent
with College of Charleston prior
to his senior year at Roswell High
School. But after a banner year
his senior season nt Roswell nnd
a few added inches and pounds,
Kessler made the jump to
Georgia.
Kessler now ranks first in
Georgia scoring, third in re
bounds, first in free throws made
and attempted, and third in
games played.
For his work on and ofT the
court in 1990, Kessler was named
the SEC Athlete of the Year.
Now, if he only knew where to
send that moving van.
