Roughneck at 40 Watt;
bring some earplugs
A&E
By DAVID WILLIAMS
Entertainment Writer
Roughneck (a combo of Waylaid
and Jarvik 8) will be opening for
Twinkie Thurs. at the 40 Watt.
If you’ve recovered from all of
the Fourth of July festivities by
Thursday night, you might want to
head out to the 40 Watt Club to see
Waylaid. They'll be jamming with
Melvin O’Casio from Jarvik 8 in
what should prove to be a sur
prising show, especially to the
band.
"We’re backing up Melvin. We
don’t know what that’s going to be
like, but we might do a couple of
Waylaid songs,” drummer Tony
Young said as he and his band-
mates kicked back at Rocky’s Sat
urday.
‘We don’t even know who’s going
to be playing what instruments.
Chances are, we won’t be playing
what we normally do,” said bassist
Larry Tenner through a mouthful
of black olive pizza.
There was one thing that the
band was sure of.
“It’s going to be heavy,” they said
in unison.
The band is playing under the
name Roughneck, and they antic
ipate some confusion between
themselves and a better known
Athens band.
“It happens a lot when Melvin
does these kinds of gigs, people
think it’s R.E.M. It happened the
last time he played,” said the
band’s singer-guitarist who would
only identify himself as “Rule.”
“I hope people think that we’re
them because we’re really broke,”
Young said.
The best word to describe Way-

laid’s music would be LOUD. They
are so loud that they’ve had prob
lems finding rehearsal space.
‘We’ve got a house, but it’s in
side the city limits so every time
we’ve practiced the cops have
come. Every time they come we try
to sound proof a different room, but
we’re running out of rooms,” Young
said.
The band has just gotten out of
the studio and they hope to release
their fourth tape in a few months.
The tape will include some new
songs and may include live ver
sions of some older songs that were
recorded at CBGB’s in New York
City. They are also hoping to re-re-
lease their last tape “Power Here
Now” sometime in the near future.
‘Power’-ful exhibit showcases Indian history
By BEVERLY COX
Entertainment Writer
The Conservatory of the State
Botanical Gardens of Georgia is
currently exhibiting silk paintings
by Dr. Susan C. Power.
Power, who got her doctorate
here at the University, had a show
at the Botanical Gardens five years
ago when the Conservatory
opened. She returns this summer
to display her colorful silk hang
ings in her show entitled “Symbols
in Silk.”
“This exhibit encompasses
works in two themes — first, those
of Souththeastern American In
dian history, and second, those
inspired by the grace and beauty of
nature,” said Power.
“The theme of her show fits in
with the nature and beauty of the
gardens, as well as the goal of
helping to educate the public
(about Indian culture),” said Jayne
L. Smith, manager of the Botanical
Gardens Visitors Center. “We’ve
had several projects relating to In
dian history and we also have
pieces of Indian history on the
grounds.”
Power’s interest in Southeastern
American Indian history began
while she was studying here at the
University.
‘The silk works inspired by
Southeastern Indian history are
based on fourteen years of aca
demic research in museums
throughout the United States and
Europe as well as working with
Native Americans in arts and hu
manities programs,” said Power.
‘These works exhibit both actual
events, as well as images and sym
bols which had particular meaning
in Indian culture.
“My intent is to shift away from
the stereotypical expressions of In
dian imagery and produce works
that express respect through vivid
colors and unique compositions in
the graceful medium of silk
painting,” Power said.
The nature silks in the show
were produced over a four-year pe
riod as well as during Power’s time
abroad.
“Recent nature silks are based
on sketches done in Nassau and
the Bahamas. The bright sunlight,
incredible blue water, and bril
liant, large flowers inspired many
works in this collection,” said
Power.
“Symbols in Silk” will run
through July 26.

“Mine" by Rttbert R. McCammon.
Pocket Books. $10.95
The name Robert R. McCammon
should be added to list of today’s
top suspense writers. With the re
cent publication of “Mine,” Mc
Cammon has moved into the ranks
of writers like Peter Straub, Ste
phen King and David Morrell.
“Mine” is the latest chapter in
Robert R. McCammon’s story. The
Birmingham, Ala., native and resi
dent has written a score of superb
suspense novels including last
year’s “The Wolfs Hour,” a unique
historical horror novel set during
World War II.
McCammon flexes his writing
muscles again with “Mine.” In this
contemporary tale of terror, he
rarely takes a wrong step.
The main character, Mary Ter
rell, a.k.a. Mary Terror, is a dis
turbed, washed-out hippie
struggling to make ends meet in
Atlanta.
During her days as a member of
the Storm Front Brigade, a violent
radical group, Mary Terror was
wounded in a shoot-out with police.
Shortly afterwards, she miscarried
Storm Front leader Lord Jack’s
baby.
She then becomes convinced
that a personals ad is a message
from Lord Jack telling her to meet
him in New York. Mary worries
that he’ll be displeased with her for
losing the baby, so she steals one
from a hospital.
Unfortunately, Mary makes the
mistake of stealing Atlanta Consti
tution reporter Laura Palmer’s

baby. Dissatisfied with the police’s
investigation of the kidnapping, a
determined Palmer sets out to find
her stolen child on her own, cre
ating a deadly cat and mouse
game.
McCammon creates two very
strong female characters in Mary
Terror and Laura Palmer Another
strong point is the action. They are
expertly written, dragging the
reader through a gamut of emo
tions — fear, horror and excite
ment. McCammon successfully
combines these breathtaking se
quences with a cohesive and inter
esting story that works well on
several levels.
With “Mine,” Robert R. Mc
Cammon delivers an involving, ac
tion-packed suspense story.
