The Red and Black / Finals • Monday. August 13. 1990 • 11
First 4 games likely to decide Dogs’ fate in ’90
Louisiana State
Where: Tiger Stadium, Baton Rouge, La.
When: Sept. 8, 7:00 p.m. CST
Last season’s record: 4-7
Coach: Mike Archer (4th year, 22-12-1 at LSU, 22-12-1 overall)
Last Meeting: 1987: LSU 26, GEORGIA 23
Series Record: 6-11-1
Scouting Report: If the Bayou Bengals didn’t have bad luck last
season, they wouldn’t have had any luck at all. With numerous players
lost to ii\jury, Coach Archer had no one to turn to as LSU lost six of
their first seven en route to a 4-7 mark, their worst in years. What’s
worse iB they’ve lost nearly the entire offensive unit to graduation, in
cluding four-year starting quarterback Tommy Hodson, and only five
defensive starters return.
So why should the Bulldogs worry about this game? First of all,
they’re playing in Baton Rouge, otherwise known as “Death Valley I”.
'“Death Valley IP is Clemson, whom Georgia faces later.) Second, run
ning back Harvey Williams returns. Williams is a talented runner who
was set down by injuries last season. Finally, there’s Archer, who’s
under some heavy pressure to get the Bengals back on track this year
or else. Archer is the kind of coach who will not allow his troops to
slump for a minute, especially this year.

Alabama
Where: Between the Hedges
When: Sept 22, 1:00 p.m. EST
Last season’s record: 10-2 (33-25 loss to Miami in Sugar Bowl)
Coach: Gene Stallings (first season)
Last Meeting: 1984: Alabama 20, GEORGIA 16
Series Record: 21-32-4
Scouting Report The Bulldogs begin playing the Crimson Tide
on a regular basis for the first time since 1965. Last season, Alabama
lost its starting tailback and starting quarterback to injury, yet still
won 10 games and went to New Orleans. The reason: Bill Curry’s
never-say-die attitude combined with the play of running back Siran
Stacy and quarterback Gary Hollingsworth to produce a tough offen
sive unit that matched the Tide’s strong defense.
Curry decided to take a hike to Lexington and wear the Wildcat
Blue, and the defensive unit returns only five players, which doesn’t
include NFL draftee Keith McCants. But nine players from last sea
son’s offense are back, including Hollingsworth and Stacy, along with
possible All-SEC tight end Lamonde Russell. And that alone should
worry Head Coach Ray Goff, who must hope the Tide doesn’t sweep
through his defense like they went through Ole Miss’. Alabama was
down 21-0 to the Rebels, then came back to win 62-27. Ouch.
Having Stacy return is reason enough for worry. Stacy rushed for
1,079 yards while starting just over half of Alabama’s games. He
scored 17 times, and showed both speed and power as a tailback and
proved the Tide have some serious depth.
Then there’s Hollingsworth, who proved he could dominate a game
last year after being called off the bench to replace Jeff Dunn. He com
pleted more than 60 percent of his passes for 2,379 yards and 14 touch
downs. Hollingsworth’s only problem is he threw 16 interceptions, but
another season in the Tides offense should cure that.
New coach Gene Stallings brings NFL savvy and an Alabama di
ploma to the job, which means he might er\joy some of his success
without Tide fans jumping on his back all the time. Stallings has a
chance to really have a good season this year, and odds are the Tide
will have the best chance of knocking Auburn out of the box.

Southern Mississippi
Where: Between the Hedges
When: Sept. 15, 1:00 p.m. EST
Last season’s record: 5-6
Coach: Curley Hallman (2nd year, 15-8 at USM, 15-8 overall)
Last Meeting: 1984: GEORGIA 26, USM 19
Series Record: 1-1
Scouting Report: The Golden Eagles started the 1989 campaign
with a stunning 30-26 win over Florida State. Everyone thought USM
had arrived, including the pollsters, who named them the 12th-best
team in the nation the next week. But the Eagles’ season went down
hill from there, as they dropped the next three games and ended up 5-6
and out of the bowl picture.
With seven starters returning on offense and six on defense, look
for USM to be a strong opponent for the Bulldogs. Senior quarterback
Brett Favre returns, putting some high-octane passing into the offense
and trying to get the ball to super-quick Michael Jackson. Favre will
be the best quarterback the Bulldogs will face all season. On the other
side of the ball, linebacker Thad McDowell will be trying to improve a
porous defense.

East Carolina
Where: Between the Hedges
When: Sept. 29, IKK) p.m. EST
Last season’s record: 5-5-1
Coach: Bill Lewis (5-5-1 at ECU, 18-26-1 overall)
Series Record: first meeting
Scouting Report: Pirate Head Coach Bill Lewis gets his first
crack at the Bulldogs after Georgia snubbed him for the head coaching
job in 1988. Lewis, who was defensive coordinator, was one of two can
didates that many people felt was going to take over for Vince Dooley
after Dooley retired. (The other was present offensive coordinator
George Haffner.) Needless to say, Lewis will be looking forward to this
game, and will probably get his players so hyped up that they'll think
this one is for the national championship. The question is, does he
have the talent needed to overcome the Bulldogs?
Another coach who will be looking forward to this contest is
Bulldog defensive coordinator Richard Bell, who coached defense at
ECU. Bell probably will have some insight into the Pirates’ plans, al
though with Lewis taking over, Bell may not know as much as he
would like. Still, the Bulldog assistant should have his defense ready
for anything Lewis has to offer.
ECU has always been a thorn in the side of many good teams,
which led many schools in North Carolina to drop them from their
schedules. But the Pirates have also been a patsy to the great teams,
such as Miami and the South Carolina teams of the Joe Morrison era.
It’s also the starting point for strong coaching careers, like Auburn
mentor Pat Dye’s. Last year ECU nearly caught Pittsburgh in a 47-42
track meet, and was edged by Peach Bowl champ Syracuse 18-16. The
Pirates are always on the verge of having a decent season, and this
year, they have the schedule to get over the top.
But the Pirates might not have the horses this year. Lewis lost
twelve starters — six each on offense and defense — and the players
coming back are nothing to scream about. And they’re players from a
5-5-1 team. What’s worse for Lewis’ Pirates is that they always end up
with whatever players North Carolina or North Carolina State decide
to bypass, so immediate help will not be forthcoming. All this could
leave the Pirates in dire straits come late September, when the Bull
dogs may need a warm-up game for Clemson.
