Staffers speak up about summer song selection
By NOEL MURRAY, RACHEL CURRY
and DAVID WILLIAMS
Entertainment Dweebs
A review of various selections we
have received throughout the
quarter.
Kris McKay “What Love En
dures**
DWEEB 1 — This record reveals
much of what is wrong with con
temporary music. Ms. McKay has a
good voice and she selects some
good songs (from artists as diverse
as John Hiatt and Billy Holliday),
but the slick, radio-ready produc
tion squeezes all the life out of it
What a waste. (**1/2)
DWEEB 2 — A superb country
voice with pop/rock backing, but
not solid enough. Kris McKay’s
“What Love Endures” is too con
trived to win big here. "Too Cool” is
a rather neat bluesy trade, but the
others fall flat (~l/2)
DWEEB 3 — Kris McKay does
have a beautiful voice. She re
minds me of Maria McKee (from
Lone Justice). McKay has a lot of
potential. Hopefully, her future al
bums will live up to that potential.

Billy Bragg “The Interna
tionale" (EP) Elektra
DWEEB 1 — Stirring and beau
tiful. This short set of socialist folk
songs makes a nice resting place
until Mr. Bragg can produce his
next full-length album. Only two
originals here, but the covers are
very choice. Not as dreary as one
might think from reading the de
scription, this entertaining record
has a life beyond the grooves.
(•***1/2)
DWEEB 2 — Mr. Bragg’s short
collection of
very compel
ling. Understated tunes baring
strong messages dominate this EP,
making it an infectious, irresis-
table piece of work. Absolutely
beautiml. (*~l/2)
DWEEB 3 — Billy Bragg is a
god! This album is a good one. The
first song is land aflame, but don’t
go rushing back to the store to re
turn it. The rest of the album is
rousing and very entertaining.
(•••• 1/2)
The Creeps “Blue Tomato"
DWEEB 1 — I swear to God, I
think somewhere in the liner notes
to this Swedish band’s album, I
read, "Thanks to Michael Hut-
chence for letting us rip off every
thing he’s ever done.” Well, if it
isn’t there, it should be. (*l/2)
DWEEB 2 — This album has an
introduction that’s pretty cool, but
after that it’s just plain silly. It
seems like these guys thought if
they threw every instrument they
could think of, some cheesy melo
dies and repetitive lyrics into a
song, they could make it big. Boy,
were they wrong. (*)
DWEEB 3 — Noel made a com
parison to Michael Hutchence and
I think that’s a good one, that is if
you were to amputate Hutchence’s
sex appeal. They make a noble at
tempt to play sensual pop without
any passion. If this was their inten
tion then they did a great job, but I
don’t want to have to listen to it. (*)
The Way Moves “Favor A Dis
grace”
DWEEB 1 — Late Rush with a
dance track. Derivative as all get
out, but occasionally interesting.
C*)
DWEEB 2 — These guys are ac
tually OK. The sneering guitar can
be a little overbearing at times, but
they have a hard-driving metal-

with-a-bit-o’-dance sound
find quite fun. (•••)
DWEEB 3 — It’s n
Not bad, at times quite affecting
(“Mary Christ”, “Disappeared.
But from a band with as much po
tential as these guys (and gal)
have, a mite disappointingX***l/2)
DWEEB 2 — Very wonderful.
Good, hard, angry music you can
sink your teeth into. (••**)
DWEEB 3 - “Goo” is Sonic
Youth’s most accessible album to
date. It has plenty of noise and dis
tortion to keep me happy without
feeling overpowered. (••••)
not actually in
teresting at all really. (1/2)
ngo “Fakebook” Bar None
DWEEB 1 - If The Velvet Un
derground and The Mamas and
The Papas met in Oklahoma and
decided to do a TV show, this is
what the theme song would sound
like. Spare and simple, it sounds as
though it were recorded long ago,
except that the sensibilities are
strangely modern. At first, it seems
so campy that it’s jarring, but grad
ually it reveals itself as one of the
most honest, heartfelt records to be
released this year. Tm in love with
this. (•••**)
DWEEB 2 — Very pretty and en
joyable, but I don’t see any major
DWEEB 3 — I like it. It has a
’60s feel without resorting to neo-
hippy stupidity. (•••)
Sonic Youth “Goo" DFG
DWEEB 1 — Maybe if I wasn’t
such a huge Sonic Youth fan, Td
like this more. Or I’d hate it more.
As it is, it strikes me as rather a ge
neric Sonic Youth album, not as
good as “Daydream Nation,” which
itself was not as good as “Sister.”
