The Colorbox: Dance mongers in heaven
BY AMY WILUAMS
Entertainment Writer
A look at how Athens newest (and
neatest) dance club is faring three
months after it f opening.
The renovation of the former Up
town Lounge and the introduction
of the finished product, a new
dance club called Colorbox, caused
quite a stir in the Athen's dance
scene. Located at 140 E. Wash
ington and jointly owned by Louis
Spetrini and Michael Krohngold of
Atlanta, Colorbox opened in late
May and has done remarkable
business during these usually slow
summer months.
It might have something to do
with the atmosphere of the club.
Even though there wasn’t much in
terior added during the renovation,
the ragged, lived-in look of the Up
town Lounge was totally elimi
nated. The layout of the place is
generally the same, but that’s the
only thing that looks like the Up
town at all.
“We did as much as we could
with the original construction. The
skylights were created by simply
removing parts of the old ceiling
where lights and speakers are now
hidden,” said Mark Baldovski who
manages Colorbox.
Whatever they did, they did it
right. Colorbox looks like nothing
Athens has ever seen. The spacious
European style dance area, elegant
bar, strobe lights, fresh flowers,
friendly staff and “even clean bath
rooms," according to Baldovski,
add to the club’s appeal. There is
even a cozy sitting room that leads
to a quiet outdoor area for those
who choose to sit bock and watch
the action. Another perk of the Col-
orbax is that it always offers
dancing.
These and many other features
are the reason that Colorbox has
consistently continued to pull in a
solid crowd since the night it
opened.
“It’s a part of the evening, a
whole new venue. I just want to
have a place where people can buy
a good drink, hear the best music
through an excellent sound
system, and dance, dance, dance!,”
exclaimed Baldovski.
With the response of Athen’s
club goers, it appears Baldovski
has reached his goal.
‘There needed to be an alterna
tive to Saturday night disco’s be
cause people like to dance more
than one night a week," explained
local Athenian and frequent Col
orbox attender Todd Puglisi.
“Ever since it opened, Colorbox
has been my favorite place to go in
town. The music is great and
there’s always lots of energy on the
dance floor,” said junior pre law
student and self-proclaimed disco
dolly Melissa Finney.
The music they play at the Col
orbox varies from night to night,
but it’s always dance music.
Wednesdays is Disco Hell fea
turing 70’s music, house music is
on Thursday’s menu, and the
weekends offer all night dancing
and performances by dance bands.
Of all the nights, Disco Hell
(Wed.) is the club’s most popular.
DJ Marc Wallace spins tunes
funky enough to bring out-of-
towners as well as locals out in
their platform shoes and bell
bottom pants and ready to boogie
down till 3 a.m.
In the fall, there will be some
scheduling changes Baldovski ex
plained.
“We will open on Tuesdays with
House night, Wednesdays will be
Disco Hell, and Thursdays will be a
look at the 80’s. Remember all of
the great 80’s bands like Kaja Goo
Goo, The Smiths, The Police, The
Cult, and Gang of Four? There are
so many songs. I feel it will become
one of our most popular nights.
Friday we will have dance bands
and an all-night dance party on
Saturdays," he said.
