Award Winner Odum serves Univ. 50 years
Ecology professor, researcher,
and enthusiast Eugene Odum re
cently celebrated 50 years of
service with University faculty, of
ficials and students.
Odum came to the University in
1940 as a zoology instructor, and
has since earned a legendary name
with the University’s ecology de
partment.
“I can think of no better example
of anybody that’s contributed more
to the reputation of this University
than Eugene Odum," University
President Charles Knapp said, at a
reception of 60 people held
Thursday in the Ecology Art Gal
lery.
Odum, the author of several
books on ecology, has been the re
cipient of imminent ecologist
awards, such as the Crafoord
Award from the Royal Swedish
Academy of Sciences, an award
equivalent to the Nobel Prize.
‘There are, indeed, no awards or
prizes higher than those given to
Dr. Odum,” Ecology Director
Ronald Pulliam said. “He’s shared
his discoveries and enthusiasm
with all of us.”
Pulliam stressed that it’s not
only Odum’s research and teaching
that has had such an impact on the
University, but the enthusiasm
he’s spread to today’s ecologists.
Odum, 77, no longer teaches at
the University, but Pulliam said he
frequently gives lectures to classes
and he’s involved in a great variety
of ecological projects.

Eugene Odum: celebrates golden anniversary
Georgia Southern’s elevation is no threat
By ALLISON SMREKAR
Campus Correspondent
Despite Georgia Southern Col
lege’s recent elevation to univer
sity status, officials say it won’t
compete with the University of
Georgia for funding, enrollment
or curriculum.
Last fall when the University
System Board of Regents voted to
elevate the South Georgia college
to university status by July of
1990, it was at an estimated ad
ditional cost of $12 million. At the
time, there was some concern on
the University of Georgia campus
that this would reduce the budget
and detract from its funding al
lotment.
However, Board spokesmen
Michael Baxter said, “We don’t
have to rob Peter to pay Paul.”
He said Ga. Southern will pay
for itself. With the status eleva
tion, Ga. Southern will get more
faculty —which will generate
more revenue for the whole
system through additional
funding.
As a regional university tar
geted to serving the needs of
South Georgia, Ga. Southern’s el
evation should have little effect
on the University of Georgia’s ad
missions or enrollment.
According to John Albright,as
sociate director of admissions,
“We don’t really know the full ef
fect. It’s just too early to tell. Yet,
this fall’s group ofentering
freshmen is a large, healthy
crop.”
Tom Jackson, director of public
information, said that losing en
rollment is the least of the Uni
versity’s worries.
“We have close to 30,000 stu
dents, so losing enrollment is not
one of our problems,” he said.
Jackson said the University is
not in competition with Ga.Sou-
thern for curriculum.
“We are carefully watching to
see that there is a minimum of
duplication in the programs at
the two institutions,” he said.
“Georgia Southern is strictly re
gional and will continue serving a
narrow constituency, regardless
of its status.”
‘The University of Georgia’s
role, on the other hand, is to
serve the genera! broad-based
needs of the state. Each univer
sity has a different mission,” he
said.
The creation of Ga. Southen
Dean Propst: University system
Chancellor
University“has tremendous
service potential for the people
who live down in that area,”
Baxter said. “Many want higher
degrees but aren’t in a position to
travel great distances or pay
great sums to get them."
