Standings: Dogs start season at bottom of SEC
By GENE WILLIAMS
Sports Writer
Georgia head football coach Ray
Goff Tuesday discussed a lot more
than the Bulldogs’ preparations for
Saturday’s SEC clash with the Ala
bama Crimson Tide.
Outside linebacker and potential
all-SEC Norman Cowins was in
definitely suspended from the
team Monday after his Sunday
night arrest on drug-sales charges.
“Norman has been suspended in
definitely,” Goff said. “My initial
reaction when I heard the news
was of intense hurt for him. But he
does have his health and his life in
front of him and he will bounce
back.”
With Cowins out, GofT faces the
tough task of replacing one of his
defensive stalwarts. Last season
Cowins started nine games, made
71 tackles and his seven sacks
were good e .uiigh for third best on
the team.
This season, Cowins had 12
tackles and one of the three sacks
the Bulldog defense has collected
this season.
“Anytime you lose a player it af
fects a team However, 1 urn confi
dent that someone will pick up the

flag and run with it,” Goff said.
Jackson steps forward
That someone probably will be
sophomore Greg Jackson, who
started against Southern Missis
sippi in Cowins’ spot (Cowins was
suffering from an iryury and only
played 16 downs). This season,
Jackson has eight tackles and one
sack. Also, junior Bryant Gantt
should get extensive playing time.
The Cowins’ incident is just an
other in a continuing series of
events rocking the team this year.
Defensive linemen Casey Bamum,
George Brewer, Curt Douglas and
Clay Ware are all suspended from
the team due to academic regula
tions. Charges against defensive
back George Wynn were dropped
yesterday. He was arrested August
23 on charges of carrying a pistol
without a license and discharging a
firearm within city limits.
Goff insists that he is in total
control of the situation.
“Just ask any of our players and
they will tell you what’s going on
over here,” Goff said. ‘The aca
demic problems of those four
players and Norman’s situation
are two totally different issues.”
Talley to start
Goff announced Tuesday that Greg
Talley will start at quarterback, re
placing Preston Jones.
“We’ll start Greg Talley in the
game Saturday. Greg has come off
the bench in both games and
played very well and he has earned
the right to start. We plan to play
both in the game,” Goff said.
“1 wunt to play whenever I get
the chance,” Talley said. ‘We are
still going to have a rotation and
there isn’t a real problem between
Preston and me because we both
know our roles.”
The change comes with Georgia
in the SEC cellar in total offense,
passing offense, and first downs
per game. The Dogs are ninth in
scoring offense.
Preston Jones said he was not
upset at being replaced.
“I am used to coming off the
bench,” Jones said. “I am just going
to use the same approach in pre
paring for the game as I normally
do.”

against Louisiana State.

Novak: injured
By ERIK SCHMIDT
Sports Writer
The Lady Dogs volleyball team
literally woke up on the wrong side
of the bed Monday as freshman of
fensive hitter Sue Novak dislo
cated her shoulder in an unlucky
accident.
“I fell off my bunk,” she said.
“Now I’m trying not to use it (the
shoulder).
Novak, the team leader in kills
with 204 this year (4.25 per game),
is expected to miss 10 to 14 days
from the accident and will not suit
up for the Illinois State Tourna
ment this weekend.
Her loss will be felt by the team,
but not to a great extent, head
coach Jim lams said.
“It’s only 20 percent (of the
team) and 20 percent can be re-
plac " he said.
L' e Davis, a 5-4 freshman
from Williamsville, N.Y., will be
Novak’s initial replacement.
Novak was a consistent starter for
the team before the injury.
“People will have to play in posi
tions tney’re not accustomed to,”
lams said. Different positions in
volleyball are more critical than in
other sports because you get used
to playing next to the same
people.”
Novak is in jeopardy of missing
an important game against LSU on
September 28, and Coach lams is
not expecting any miracles.
“I’m never optimistic with inju
ries,” he said.
Other strengths for the Lady
Dogs include freshman Franci
Rard and junior Jill Moore.
Rard leads the team in digs this
season with 154 and is second in
kills with 154. She was named to
the All-Tournament Team in the
Auburn Invitational last weekend.
Moore is eighth in the nation in as
sists with 12.17 per game and is
one of the more experienced
players on the team.
The Lady Dogs are currently
ranked sixth in the country in kills
and 16th in assists.
Upcoming matches for the team
include the tournament at Illinois
State and a match at Purdue. Then
the Lady Dogs come home to
Athens to square off against LSU
in a confrontation which could de
cide the SEC title.
Athens no longer site of choice
for 1996 tennis, swimming events
By RANDY WALKER
Sports Editor
Athens, Ga., as well as Athens,
Greece will both not be hosting
any Olympic events in the
summer of 1996.
While Atlanta won the right to
host the 1996 games Tuesday, it
is unlikely that any events will be
staged at the University, despite
early speculation.
Athens was originally the site
of choice for tennis and swim
ming events, but the Atlanta
Olympic Committee decided to
keep most events closer to At
lanta.
The Yachting competition,
scheduled to be held in Sa
vannah, is the only event
planned for outside the imme
diate Atlanta area.
University President Charles
Knapp is optimistic, however,
that Georgia will be involved in
the Games one way or another.
"We intend to be actively in
volved,’ Knapp said. “We’re sit
ting here with an 80,000 seat
stadium, some of the premier
tennis facilities in the country
and 7,000 empty rooms in the
summer so I think well be in
volved in it. It’ll be a fine thing to
see some of these events in
Athens.”
Elisabeth Ayres, president of
Students for the Olympics also
believes Athens will be a part of
the Games.
‘The Olympics will affect a
large radius of Atlanta,” Ayres
said. “I’m sure some athletes will
be training in Athens.”
Athletic Director Vince Dooley
has offered cooperation and the
use of the Georgia facilites for
Olympic use.
Early speculation tagged
Georgia's Henry Feild Stadium,
which has hosted 14 NCAA Men’s
Tennis Championships, as the
site for tennis competition, and
the soon-to-be-built Spacecenter
as the site for the swimming
events.
