Kasay: Kicking for Dogs ‘just a job’
By ERIC GARBER
Sports Writer
Even with ice packs pressed
firmly against his kicking leg
after practice, John Kasay claims
to not be in pain.
For the Athens native, kicking
an oval ball through goal posts
two hours a day is just “part of
the job of being a college place-
kicker.” In what has thus far
been a season of extensive incon
sistency for Georgia, Kasay’s atti
tude and performance have in
many ways been the glue for the
team.
“I'm extremely confident any
time John Kasay represents me
on the field,” Georgia head coach
Ray GofT said.
The senior’s value to the Dogs’
ailing offense is clearly seen in
his stats. Kasay has accounted
for 13 of his team’s 31 points (42
percent) in two games this season
and is four-for-four on field goal
attempts.
He also has yet to miss an
extra point.
“It’s too early to get into all
that," Kasay said. “I’m only doing
the things I'm expected to do. It’s
basically just a job.”
Though the season may be
young, coaches know that
without Kasay, the 1-1 Dogs
could Ik.* winless.
It’s an outstanding feeling
hasing John out there," offensive
coordinator George HafTner said.
“I haven’t worked with anybody
like this since Kevin Butler

Christie Lord plays volleyball
with a vengeance. Her eyes have
an intensity that can intimidate
any opponent.
Lord, a senior from Sylvania,
Ga., is a key starter for the 1990
Lady Dogs volleyball team. Her
skills and intensity will be nec
essary if the Dogs are to do well in
the Illinois State Tournament this
weekend.
She shares the team lead in de
fense with 11 blocks and 23 assists,
while offensively she is third on the
team with 142 kills and 110 digs.
What makes these numbers im
pressive is that Lord didn’t dis
cover volleyball until she was 16.
The Lady Dogs are sixth in the
country in kills and 16th in assists.
She started playing volleyball at
Woodward Academy in Atlanta
and quickly became one of the top
players in the state.
’’Christie was one of the best
players I’ve ever coached," Wood
ward Academy coach Claire Adams
said. “Her willingness to listen and
work hard allowed her to progress
rapidly."
Lord, who signed with the Lady
Dogs in 1987, registered more kills
and digs than any other freshman
on the team.
Her sophomore year, she was
named MVP of the Peach State
Tournament, and was named
second-team All-SEC in 1988 and
1989. In 1989 she racked up a team
high with 414 kills.
This year Lord moved from out
side hitter to middle blocker where
she is doing well and improving
with each meet.
“What will make her good is she
is extremely mobile and has a very
quick arm,’’ Georgia coach Jim
lams said. “Once she gets time
under her belt, which she will have
to do quickly, she will allow us to
do a lot of things.”
Lord attributes her success to
aggressive play and a competitive
attitude.
“I’m a perfectionist," said Lord,
who as a high school senior played
on the United States Junior
Olympic volleyball team. “I get
mad at myself whenever I make a
mistake.”
It is not surprising that Lord’s
favorite play is nailing an opponent
with a kill.
“I love a good kill,” she said. “It
really gets our team fired up."
Natural athleticism runs in her
family. Her grandfather, Vernon

defensive end for Georgia in 1931.
Out of the gym, Lord is as active
as when she is setting up kills.
“I love a lot of sports, she said.
“Softball, basketball, horses, any
thing outside.”
Her love for the outdoors guided
her to possibly pursue a career in
Forest Resources and Conserva
tion.
“I want to be outside," Lord said.
“I’m really concerned about the
state of our environment.”
For now, Lord is focusing on this
weekend’s tournament and the
rest of the season.
“I just want to give as much to
the team as I can,” she said.
The 10-3 Lady Dogs are heading

into a tournament at Illinois State,
followed by a match at Purdue Uni
versity. The spikers then come
home to the Coliseum, where they
face LSU in a match that could de
cide the SEC title. They head into
the weekend without kill-leader
Sue Novak, who dislocated her
shoulder Monday.
