Golf team finish eighth in opener
Georgia's l Oth-ranked men’s
golf team played a disappointing
final round Sunday to drop to an
eighth place tie with Southern Cal
ifornia at the Carpet Capital Colle
giate Classic in Dalton. After
Saturday's second round, Georgia
held on to fifth place, but faltered
in the final round to drop into the
ninth slot in their first competition
of the season.
“1 think a lack of preparation
lust caught up with us," Georgia
coach Dick Copas said. “We weren’t
prepared to go play. We weren’t in
a competitive mood at all, and
that’s my fault.”
Cooas cited the first week of
school activities as interference
with mental preparation before the
tournament. Copas said that
starting practice a week earlier
may have helped.
“They were olaying all summer
long so 1 figured they would be pre
pared, but they weren’t,” Copas
said.“We need to work on our con
centration and on what we’re
doing.”
After shooting the first two
rounds at three-under-par, pre
season All-American Paul Claxton
skyrocketed to a final round 80 to
finish in 12th place (68-73-80) in
the individual competition.
Franklin Langham (75-72-76) fin
ished in 12th place. Bill Brown,
Greg Kennedy and Neal Hendee all
finished back in the pack.

Cross country teams run strong
Terry Heed and Keli Butler led
the way for Georgia’s men’s and
women’s cross country teams last
weekend as the teams finished
fifth and third respectively in the
Alabama Invitational.
Heed paced the men with a ninth
-place finish in 25:11, while Butler
placed second in 17:39. Reed
knocked off over a minute from his
last race time, while Butler ran at
approximately the same pace she
did in the Western Carolina Invita
tional two weeks ago.
"Both teams ran well,” Georgia
coach John Mitchell said. “I was
pleased. Thev’re getting stronger
and stronger.”
Senior Enc Tyson, usually the
men’s top finisher, missed the meet
due to a groin injury. The duration
of Tyson’s absence from future
meets is still up in the air.
“It’s one of thoee inside things
that are mysterious and move
around," Mitchell said of the in
jury, “I don’t know when he’ll be
back."
This weekend both cross-country
squads will compete at the West
Georgia Invitational in Carrollton.

Volleyball team suffers two losses
By LYA WODRASKA
Sports Writer
The Georgia volleyball team
finished second in the Rax Red-
bird Classic this weekend with
wins over Murray State and Rice
before losing to host Illinois State
in the final 15-13,7-15,7-15,15-
12,14-16.
“It was a gut-wrenching loss
because we had a chance to win
it," Georgia coach Jim lams said.
“Illinois State played a good
match and we didn’t play as well
as we needed to, but hopefully
the loss will make us better,” he
said.
Freshman Franci Rard led the
team with 37 kills and 10 service
aces during the tournament,
while junior Jill Moore contrib
uted 112 assists. Senior Christie
Lord added 34 kills and 11
blocks.
The Lady Dogs (12-5) wrapped
up the weekend with a loss to
Purdue 6-15,7-15,15-13,12-15.
“Purdue is a fine team and we
started slowly, we had a chance
to win the fourth game but we
just didn’t play well," lams said.
"I’m not pleased with either loss.”
lams said the loss of freshman
Sue Novak, who is out with a dis
located shoulder, wasn’t a factor
in the losses.
‘The wins over Murray State
and Rice were complete team ef
forts,” he said. “We just didn’t
play as well as we needed to
against Illinois State and
Purdue.”
Senior Kristin Hackley led the
team in kills against the Lady
Boilermakers with 14. Jill Moore
made 39 assists, while freshman
Lenore Davis totaled 17 digs.
The Lady Dogs will take on the
defending SEC Champions LSU
(8-5) at 7:30 p.m. in the Women’s
P.E. Building on Friday in a
match that could eventually de
cide this year’s conference title.
The Tigers are a traditionally
strong team capturing conference
titles in 1985,1986 and 1989 and
second-place finishes in 1987 and
1988. The meeting will be the
first conference match for both
squads and should be a battle be
tween LSlTs defense and the
Dogs offense.
LSU leads the conference in
blocking with an average of four
blocks per game.
