SEC additions spark interest
And then there were 12.
The Southeastern Conference officially welcomed
the University of South Carolina into the fold, raising
the total of members in the SEC to 12, including Ar
kansas which was accepted earlier this year.
Arkansas will be a huge lift in basketball (witness
last year’s Pinal Four appearance) and football (Ar
kansas is a fixture in the Cotton Bowl). South Caro
lina competes yearly with SEC schools in recruiting
and should have no problem in establishing rivalries
on the field. And maybe, USC will persuade the SEC
brass to make soccer an intercollegiate sport.
Now, Georgia athletic director Vince Dooley can say
whatever he wants to about SEC expansion not con
cerning money, but the bottom line is that everyone
will benefit financially. This is the sole reason why
West Virginia, Tulane, Virginia Tech, and even
mighty Miami is considering the SEC as the place to
be.
The SEC shouldn’t consider either Virginia squad
because both are too far away from practically every
other school. Can you imagine driving to West Vir
ginia to see Georgia take on the Mountaineers? Tu
lane would be a good choice because they play in the
Superdome and they are building a solid basketball
program. Needless to say, the SEC would definitely
rosper with the powerful Hurricanes in football, bas-
etball, and baseball.
I believe that the SEC will continue merger-mania,
eventually expanding to as many as 16 teams. The
four schools the SEC should consider are Memphis
State, Louisville, Tulane, and Miami. Memphis State
has a solid basketball tradition; they play football in
the Liberty Bowl. They are also in a city growing by
leaps and bounds and are relatively close to every
SEC school. Ditto Louisville.
With 16 teams, the SEC could split into two eight-
team divisions -an eastern and western division. The
East could contain Georgia, Florida, Alabama, South
Carolina, Auburn, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Mem
phis State while the West would have LSU, Kentucky,
Louisville, Arkansas, Tulane, Mississippi State, Mis
sissippi, and Miami.
In football, each school would play an intradivision
round-robin schedule. Then the fun would really
begin. The two divisional winners could play in the
Peach Bowl in Atlanta — in the new Georgia Dome —
for the right to represent the Super SEC in the Sugar
Bowl. In the other sports, a simple round-robin type
format would suffice.
People have discussed what advantage it would be
for Miami to enter the SEC and the question is very
valid. Miami is currently an independent and they
keep all of the bowl and TV money they generate and
if they join the SEC, they would have to split all the
money they earn with the other members of the SEC.
However, if every major school is anxious to hook up
with larger conferences, that means there will be
fewer spots on schedules for the good teams to play
Miami or other teams outside of their conferences.
Whatever the outcome, the SEC will continue to ex
pand in teams, but their pocketbooks will as well.

Miami, West Va. also court SEC
By RANDY WALKER
Sports Editor
With South Carolina’s accep
tance into the SEC Tuesday eve
ning, Miami and West Virginia
could be the next schools to jump
on the bandwagon.
The New Orleans Times-Pic
ayune reported Wednesday that
conference officials have given
Miami an extended deadline to
make a decision on whether to join
the league. West Virginia officials
are also beginning to push for
membership.
Last week the SEC asked Miami
to meet a Monday deadline, but
Miami Athletic Director Sam Jan-
kovich requested more time.
The deadline was apparently ex
tended by one week, the Times-Pic-
ayune source said.
With Miami’s position unclear,
West Virginia Athletic Director Ed
Pastilong sent each SEC school in
formation and is in the process of
scheduling visits with league mem
bers.
Tulane and Virginia Tech also
have been mentioned as possible
candidates if Miami joins the SEC.
Last August, Arkansas accepted an
invitation to join the league.
Both South Carolina and Ar
kansas will participate in all sports
except for football in the 1991-92
school year. By 1993, the Game
cocks and the Razorbacks should
begin their new SEC rivalries on
the gridiron.
Georgia coach Ray Goff was ex
cited to learn of South Carolina’s
acceptance into the league.
“I think this will be great for
them (USC) and great for the
SEC,” said Goff. W I have tremen
dous respect for (Gamecock coach)
Sparky Woods and what he’s done
with the football program as well
as respect for the outstanding
overall athletic program at South
Carolina. I’m happy to have them
as part of our SEC family.”
Tulane and Virginia
Tech also have been
mentioned as possible
candidates if Miami
joins the SEC. Last
August, Arkansas
accepted an invitation
to join the league.
Said Woods, “I know that the
Southeastern Conference stands
for excellence in college football
and by this invitation, the SEC is
recognizing our program as one
that shares the same lofty goals.”
