Faculty couple presents recital on campus
By JENNIFER WILKIN
News Editor
The Joiner Duo, a faculty vi
olin-viola performing pair, today
will present the first faculty re
cital of the School of Music's
1990-91 season, at 8 p.m. in the
University Chapel.
The duo, comprised of married
couple Thomas Joiner,violin, and
Anna Barbrey Joiner, viola, will
offer a program that includes
works by Johannes Brahms,
Dmitri Shostakovich and Georg
Philipp Telemann.
This will be the first time the
Joiners have performed in
Athens, despite their four-year
tenure as a concert duet. Both
have been with the University
eight years.
“We’ve developed a repertoire
of pieces that would fill up two or
three programs,” Thomas said.
‘The Telemann is a new addi
tion.”
Thomas is conductor of the
University Symphony Orchestra
and teaches violin and orchestral
conducting. Anna is director of
the University’s pre-college Su
zuki String Program and teaches
viola. Both are members of the
Franklin String Quartet, a pro
fessional faculty performing
group.
Even though the two work clo
sely together during the day,
Thomas said they try not to take
their work home with them. Re
hearsal time is squeezed in be
tween classes.
“We rehearse in her office and
eat lunch in mine,” he said.
The Joiners often present
clinics and workshops ranging
from public school elementary
string programs to state music
conventions.
They both serve on the Artist-
Faculty of the Brevard Music
Center in Brevard, N.C.

‘Blossom’ is Vachss’ vicious best
By JEFF RUTHERFORD
Contributing Writer
A review of “Blossom,” by An
drew Vachss. Published in hard
back by Alfred A. Knopf for $17.95.
255 pgs.
Andrew Vachss is the 1990s’ ver
sion of Raymond Chandler. Chan
dler created the hardboiled
detective novel in the Thirties, and
now Vachss breathes new life into
the genre.
His novels document tough life
on the streets.
"1 grabbed a table with both hands,
spun on my right foot, tilted my
body parallel to the floor and shot
my left boot into Fatsos ribs. He
doubled over as 1 knife-edged my
hand and chopped into his neck.
Lloyd piled on, pounding with bttth
hands.
The two guys on the other end
started out of the booth just as
Virgil slapped the nearest one with
an open palm. It sounded like a
rifle shot. Virgil flicked his hand.
Bloody glass from the ashtray fell
out. ”
With the publication of his fifth
novel, “Blossom,” Vachss continues
the chronicles of Burke, a char
acter introduced in his first book,
“Flood.”
Burke, the protagonist of all of
Vachss’ novels, is a hardened ex-
con who lives on the street, bat
tling scum — child abusers.
Vachss’ tales are written in a
stripped down, razor-edged, first
person prose. No punches are
pulled. What you get is the real
thing.
■ BOOK REVIEW
Vachss’ tales are
written in stripped-
down, razor-edged
prose. No punches are
pulled. What you get is
the real thing.
In “Blossom,” Burke takes his
show out of the city — New York
City — and into the country. Virgil,
one of Burke’s old cellmates, gives
him a call for help. Lloyd, Virgil’s
teen nephew, is the prime suspect
in a series of shootings at a local
lovers’ lane.
Burke rolls into town ready for
action. He has to find the shooter
fast, before Lloyd goes to trial.
Using the street skills he honed in
the city, Burke hits the pavement.
Without some local help, Burke
can’t get an angle on the problem.
So, he turns to Blossom, a resilient,
vengeful woman whose sister was
killed by the sniper. Burke heads
out with Blossom at his side.
Vachss is a New York lawyer
whose practice is limited to the
representation of children. He
fights his battles in real life as well
as on the page.
All his writing concerns the
plight of the abused child in today’s
society and his character Burke
hunts down the vultures who prey
on children.
Vachss’ latest is a lean, in-

sightful look at life on the street.
He does not write about cliched pri
vate detectives. He writes suspen
seful novels laden with gritty
realism. The suspense that per
meates the novel is not contrived.
He writes about the mean streets
that exist in every American city.
“Blossom,” is a perfect introduc
tion into Burke’s vicious world. It
may not be pretty, but it’s very
real. The mean streets still exist
and it’s better to read about them
than experience them face to face.
