Rockin’ good weekend forecast
TATE CENTER THEATER
• Sept. 28-29: Pretty Woman.
Richard Gere and Julia Roberts
bring back the g<x)d old-fashioned
romantic comedy in the year’s most
popular movie.
• Sept. 28-29 midnight: Cafe Flesh.
Seriously, this is supposedly a very
well made porno film. The plot: In
the future, a gaggle of sexless
dweebs watch potent performers
have intercourse. See life imitate
art at the Tate Center this
weekend.
•Sept. 30: Fanny and Alexander. A
masterpiece from Swedish
director/legend Ingmar Bergman
about life “through the eyes of a
child.”
•Oct. 1: Fantasia. A special free
sneak preview of the greatest
animated film ever made.
•Oct. 3: Sunset Boulevard. Billy
Wilder’s scathing indictment of the
Hollywood star system is on almost

every critic’s best-ever list. I’m
ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMille.
•Oct. 4: Amadeus. Stunning
meditation on the curse of
mediocrity, explored through the
intertwining lives of Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart and his rival
Salieri. An interesting and
entertaining must-see.

• Pretty Woman. Bring a prostitute
and get in free.
• Jungle Book. Fire! That’s it! It’s
the only thing Shere Khan is afraid
of!
CLASSIC TRIPLE
• Ghost.
W oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
• Exorcist III. Thrice the
possession. Thrice the fun.
• Narrow Margin. Correction from
my review on Sept.25 — Anne
Archer does have a profession. She
plays an editor. Like it matters —
the filmmakers still didn’t bother
to give her a character.
GEORGIA SQUARE
• Young Guns II. A movie that
understands the meaning of the
word “pals.”
• Flatliners. The central metaphor
for this movie — plastic sheets
blowing in the wind.
• Funny About Love. About love?
Sure, okay, 111 give ’em that. But
funny? No way, man.
• Postcards From the Edge. Very
good movie, based on the Carrie
Fisher novel. The novel follows a
different storyline, but is as witty,
if not more so, than the movie. If
you enjoyed one, try the other.
• Hardware. Critics have been
lining up to praise this sci-fi horror
film, but the general public
reaction has been negative. You
make the call.
• Death Warrant. Jean Claude Van
Damme kicks the crap outta the
bad guys. Hell, oui.
• Pacific Heights. Michael Keaton
as the Thing That Wouldn’t Leave,
terrorizing his landlords —
Matthew Modine and Melanie
Griffith.
• Repossessed. Linda Blair and
Leslie Nielsen parody horror films.
• Slumber Party Massacre 3. Just
when you thought it was safe to get
back in your jammies.
LEFONT BEECHWOOD
• I Come in Peace. Dolph Lundgren
Pacific Heights: Michael Keaton (with Melanie Griffith)
will take you to psychological heights in this new thriller.

they truck on into town and plant their seeds at the Georgia Theatre Monday night.
plays a renegade cop from Houston
who discovers that intergalactic
drug dealers have landed. Throw
in a crippling disease and you have
every formula known to film.
• Wild At Heart. A rockin’ good
movie about a group of people who
are more than a little bit confused.
• Darkman. He is everywhere and
nowhere. Everyone and no one.
Call him ... Darkman.
• Presumed Innocent. By the way,
the killer is actually ... nah, just
kidding. Figuring it out yourself is
half the fun. This should leave
town soon, so catch it while you
can.
• Goodfellas. Goodmovie.

MUSIC IN TOWN
40 WATT
• Sept. 28: Mercyland run in the
same vein as the best of early
punk, from Buzzcocks to Black
Flag. Great, impassioned stuff. The
mighty roar of Dirt opens.
• Sept. 29: Obnoxious Brits Gaye
Bykers on Acid defy description.
The industrial sturm and drang of
Jarvik 8 kicks off the show, which is
bound to be ... memorable.
• Oct. 1: Mark Wallace Dance Party.
This is a party. This is a disco. This
is a-foolin’ around.
• Oct. 2: From the ashes of the
intense Gothic Southrock of Billy
James rises The Vultures.
Unknown quantity at the moment,
but if they play with half the power
that Billy James once did, The
Vultures should smoke.
• Oct. 3: A. Ditch. Second Skin
opens.
• Oct. 4: Twlnkie and Heavy Ethel.
GEORGIA THEATRE
• Sept. 28: Allgood Music Company
and Rockafellas. And it’s ladies
night ... oh, what a night.
• Sept. 29: A field day for The
Sundays this Saturday. Common
complaints about The Sundays are
that their music lacks bite and
their singer is whiny. But these
guys (and girl) have a way of
evoking a beautiful, sorrowful
mood with only a few simple
acoustic guitar strums and a
wistful vocal. Whether this will
come across in a live setting is
difficult to say, but worth finding
out.
• Oct. 1: Solid roots-rock with The
Beat Farmers.
• Oct. 2: First Anniversary Party.
• Oct. 3: Recently revamped MGB
is tight with a capital T. Meaty
pop-rock originals, with the
choicest selection of 60s covers
tossed in for added power.
• Oct. 4: Dash Rip Rock are very
hot right now and for good reason.
Good rock and roll never goes out of
style. Opening band People Who
Must will be playing obvious and
derivative alternative pop in their
Athens debut. Come late.
ROCKFISH PALACE
• Sept. 28: Normaltown Flyers have
been dragging their classic
country-rock form around for a
long time now, and they’re still
entertaining the masses.
• Sept. 29: The Healers.
• Oct. 1: Hoot Night. Acoustic
potpourri.
DOWNSTAIRS
• Sept. 28: 28 Days play fiat-out
delightful country-tinged pop.
Opening band Big Butt has a great
name. What more could you ask
for?
• Sept. 29: Zo has been picking up
fans around here quickly in the
short time that they’ve been toting
their acoustic guitars down from
North Carolina. See what the fuss
is about. Flytrap opens.
• Oct. 1: Missouri Breaks with
Woody Garrison.
• Oct. 2: 3 Walls Downs and Craig
Agans.
• Oct. 3: Incredible local film
“Lighthearted Nation” plays its
third return engagement before
Atlanta’s August Spies.
• Oct. 4: Hank McCoy.
