The Ultimate Career Day
Everything you wanted to know about career fairs...
...but were afraid to ask
Your future starts now! Now is the time to take advantage of EVERY-
TFIING available to you-no matter whether you are a freshman, sopho
more, junior, senior graduate student, or an alumnus. Use your time wisely
and use as many resources as possible.
What could be a better time management tool in the job search than at
tending a career fair, where you will meet a large number of employers, at
one time, and in one location? Nothing else. This is your best opportunity to
make
yourself visible to a lot of employers, as well as to gather important in
formation about many organizations and their career opportunities. Informa
tion sharing-that's the key.
Remember that' the employer representatives are visiting many
schools, not just The University of Georgia. Therefore, you are in competi
tion with other students from other locations. Don't let this intimidate
youllnstead, let it motivate you to make the best first impression possible.
Career fairs are information sharing times; but they are also "product' mar
keting times. In other words, the employers are each "selling" their organiza
tions to you and, hopefully, you are "selling" your qualifications to each of
them. Everyone is selling his/her own product. If you don't sell yourself, no
one else will. In doing so, you want to be well-prepared, confident and as
sertive, You don't want to "stand out." You want to BE OUTSTANDING.
There is a big difference. And if you present yourself in an outstanding and
professional manner...there is no doubt that you will be outstanding in the
minds of the recruiters as someone they would like to interview. Employers
really do remember students-the good points and the bad.
Getting the most out of a career fair starts well before the career fair It
self. It begins with preparation-knowing yourself, your skills, qualifications,
interests, values, goals and career areas of interest; Identifying employers
you want to talk to and a little something about them; and preparing your re
sume. In order to have the most exciting and valuable experience possible,
read on and heed the advice that follows. Remember, your future starts
now. Good luck and enjoy it!
1. Dress in professional attire, if at all possible. Dress for success.
Men: A dark colored suit (blue or grey, for example) with conserva
tive tie and matching shoes.
Women: A professional suit, possibly dark colored also. A low
heeled pump is very practical. Minimal jewelry.
A portfolio may be carried to hold copies of your resume and blank
paper for notetaking.
2. Come prepared-resumes in hand and questions in mind.
Introduce yourself in a positive and confident manner.
Smile, project enthusiasm and offer a firm handshake.
Describe your major, classification (senior, sophomore, etc.) and of
fer them a copy of your resume.
Be ready to discuss your background, qualifications and career goals.
BE ASSERTIVE AND POSITIVE Start selling yourself in reference to
your skills, major, course work, GPA, work experiences and extra-curricular
activities.
Make sure you have researched the employer and have questions
ready to ask the representatives concerning types of positions, duties and
responsibilities, locations and training programs. You can find information
about employers in the Career Planning and Placement Center's Career In
formation Library.
Collect business cards and literature.
You may ask representatives about possible opportunities even if they
have not listed your field of interest on the employer interest list.
3. Speak with as many representatives as possible, for your informa
tion as well as for your visibility.
4. Initiate conversation with the employers and have something signifi
cant to say about yourself, including your career interests, your skills
and qualifications and your interest in that employer.
Remember, you never get a second chance to make a good first im
pression! Be confident and assertive.
5. IMMEDIATELY AFTER the career day-FOLLOW UP by sending
employer representatives you are interested in a Thank You letter
(and resume) for having had the opportunity to discuss your.qualifi-
cations and interests with them. Also, FOLLOW UP by checking into
on-campus interviews the employers may have scheduled and by
getting registered with Career Planning and Placement. Then FOL
LOW THROUGH with any suggestions the employer might have
made, such as taking a required employment exam, providing addi
tional information, etc. Pont procrastinate!
Your initial preparation should start with a visit to the Career Planning
and Placement Center, Clark Howell Hall, 2nd floor. You may call 542-3375,
or come by to make an individual advisor appointment or to sign up for one
of our orientation sessions, Career Planning Seminar or Co-op/Internship
Seminar. The seminars are approximately 50 minutes in length and tell you
about our services and procedures for starting your job search. You will also
receive a free copy of our Career Kit, student career handbook. Many other
seminars and services are available to assist you at all stages of the job
search. It's never too early to get started. So come by and let us help you
plan and prepare for your future.
