Agapefest is a festival
with a different theme
Tomorrow, College Avenue is
going to be the site of yet another
festival, but the first annual
Agapefest 1990 should be a fes
tival with a difference. The fes
tival, which is also called the
“Festival of Love,” will bring to
gether more than 20 performing
groups to praise God.
The 11-hour concert will in
clude a wide variety of perfor
mances ranging from gospel
choirs to Christian rock to inter
pretive dance and puppet shows.
The event is co-sponsored by
WMSL/ KM-89 nnd the Abundant
Life Christian Fellowship, who
have been planning the event
since February. The organizers
hope to bring all Christians to
gether for one big celebration.
“What we’re looking for is to
get the whole body of Christ to
gether, instead of just broken up
into different denominations,”
said Mark Rejmar, who plays
with a Christian rock band that
will be performing at the festival.
Despite the religious nature of
this event, the organizers said
they don’t want to impose their
beliefs on anyone.
One of the feature perfor
mances will be by Beth Holland,
a UGA graduate who studied
opera in New York.
The organizers said the fes
tival has no purpose other than
for everyone to sing and have a
good time.
Agapefest will begin at 11 a m.
and run until midnight tom-
morrow. Admission is free.

Folk tradition alive and well

The seventh annual North
Georgia Folk Festival will be held
this Saturday at Sandy Creek Park
from 1-9 p.m. The festival will fea
ture a potpourri of folk, bluegrass,
gospel and blues music, as well as
art and craft work in the north
Georgia folk tradition.
This year’s event features nine
performing groups and 15 visual
artists, each truly devoted to their
particular genre of the folk arts.
“The purpose of the festival is
two-fold: to entertain and to edu
cate,” said Angela Kudon, cultural
services specialist of the Division of
Cultural Services of the Depart
ment of Parks in Clarke County.
“We’re trying to keep alive these
folk traditions.”
Among the acts included in this
year’s festivities are The Buddy
O’Reilly Band, who will play tradi
tional Irish music, blues singer and
mouth harp player Neal Patman
and guitarist and blues singer Pre
cious Bryant. Reverend Nathaniel
and Sister Fleta Mitchell will be
singing old-time Southern gospel
and spiritual music.
Also set to perform is Hair of the
Dog, a band that specializes in
Cajun dance music, bluegrass mu
sicians Georgia Bound, musical
folklorist Mike Seger and four of
Georgia’s best old-time fiddlers.
Music is just a portion of what
will be offered at the festival.
There will also be an exhibition of
folk art significant to Georgia’s cul
ture, as well as farm animals, rural
games and clogging.
‘The interest and response to
wards the festival has been tre
mendous,” Kudon said. “We feel
that we are fulfilling our purpose of
trying to keep alive traditions in
Georgia that began when the state
was founded and making people
aware of them.”
Tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for se-

nior citizens and children aged 7-

The festival will take place at

Jean Creekmore, a secretary at
the Chamber of Commerce, said
that many clubs and individuals
will be represented.
‘There will be craft booths nnd
individuals from the local Happy
Valley Pottery store ns well ns from
Georgia, Alabama nnd Florida,”
Creekmore said. “The children’s
activities will include a train ride,
bobbing for apples and a carousel
like boat ride.”
Non-profit organizations, such
as the Lions Club and the Rotary
Club, will also be represented.
There is no entrance fee for the
festival and prices will vary at dif
