Faithful fans wait for Dylan tickets
Many waited over six hours to get tickets to the upcoming Bob Dylan concert, which will
be held at the Coliseum. Others camped out waiting for sales to begin.

noses, colds, things like that.
“Right now I’m working on my
facts and figures. I want to be sure
of my facts.”
Data from a previous question
naire was compiled in March and
failed to yield any conclusive evi
dence of a single problem with a
single solution. Ansley charted
complaints on blueprints of the
building by room and ventilation
system and no pattern emerged.
“We didn’t come up with a very
good correlation,” said Warren
Softer, assistant Public Safety di
rector.
The next step is to use the $18,-
000 toxic gas monitor loaned to the
University by DHR. Ansley said he
will determine locations to check
for levels of air pollution after ana
lyzing the data.
So far, the University has or
dered the plates the monitor re
quires to cneck for high levels of
formaldehyde and pyridine. The
monitor will allow ESS to check for
gas levels over a period of 48 to 72
hours instead of just spot-checking
as was done before.
Zoology Professor Karen Porter
was one of the people on Wood el’s
list.
“I hod a lot of upper respiratory
problems; a dry throat, nosebleeds,
headaches, confusion,” she said.
“During the last two years I began
to determine a real cause and ef
fect.”
From her office on the third floor
Porter has been exposed to a
number of air pollutants. She said
there is an intense mold growth in
the ventilation system. It’s a
common mold, rhizopus aspergillis,
but she is allergic to it.
In the spring a lab on her floor
developed a leak of the toxic chem
ical pyridine in one of its pipes.
Then a floor drain on the fourth
floor tested positive for pyridine
this summer, caused by a back-up
of dumped chemicals.
On Thursday, a pipe in the same
third-floor lab was discovered to
have a cracked cap. That pipe led
to an underground sewer and gas
from the sewer had been drifting
into the lab.
Safler identified mold, formalde
hyde, fumes entering the bio-sci
ences complex from the tar roofing
on the chemistry building and
sewer gas as possible culprits the
building is housing.
Ansley said solving the problems
could be a slow process.
“I’d love to do it quickly, but I’m
concerned with doing it right, to do
as best and as thorough a job as we
can,” he said. “People want a solu
tion to be this; unfortunately it’s
this, and that, and this and this.”
Judy Nelms, an office manager
and assistant to the director of the
Institute of Ecology, has closely fol
lowed the air quality problem in
her building.
“We had not as severe a problem
as biological sciences — but a
problem of not enough fresh air
coming into the building, and the
vents hadn’t been cleaned,” Nelms
said. ‘We had the classic sick-
building syndrome — not enough
fresh air, some inadequate house
keeping.”
Physical Plant tried to help
remedy the problem in the spring.
Director James TenBrook said
Physical Plant worked with a con
sultant from Atlanta.
Physical Plant cleaned the air
diffusers of the air conditioning,
heating and ventilation systems,
attempted to balance the airflow in
the building and made sure the
fume hoods that suck fumes from
chemicals out of the room in the la-
bratories were working properly.
Nelms said education and an
awareness of the problem has
helped improve air quality.
Laboratory workers began to use
fume hoods properly more often
and everyone became more aware
of how important general house
cleaning was to a healthy environ
ment. Partitions were put up to
keep air from the laboratories out
of other parts of the building.
‘What bailed out ecology,” Ten-
Brook said, “was a mi\jor renova
tion in the aquatics lab.”
The renovation, which hasn’t
been completed, will replace much
of the existing air system in the
building and improve the air
quality that much more, he said.
JOSH

After two years of intense re
search, McDowell came to the con
clusion that the evidence for the
validity of the Bible was so over
whelming that it was impossible to
reject it. Since then, he has pub
lished 34 best-selling books and
spoken to more than 8 million stu
dents in the 26 years he has been
lecturing.
According to a recent poll con
ducted by the University of Texas,
McDowell is the most popular
speaker on American college cam
puses today. He is on the staff of
the national Christian campus or
ganization, Campus Crusade for
Christ.
Despite his immense popularity,
McDowell doesn’t see great finan
cial rewards. All of the profits from
his book sales go to charity, and he
charges just enough at his
speaking engagements to cover his
expenses, he said.
“I am not here to make money”,
he said. “I just want to give stu
dents the opportunity to hear an
alternative point of view to what
society is saying.”
However, not everyone was
thrilled with the fact that Josh was
coming to speak at the University.
Robert Pellock, founder of the
University’s Objectivist Club, was
offended by the manner in which
the event was publicized.
The objectivists embrace the

philosophy of Ayn Rand, which in
cludes atheism.
“I think the publicity for this
event was a little unfair to the
atheist point of view,” he said.
"I am not saying anything about
Josh personally because I don’t
know exactly what he has to say,"
Pellock said. “But the publicity
made it seem as if the atheist point
of view is not valid and is easily re
futable.”
Pellock didn’t attend either of
McDowell’s lectures.
