Latest Real Life vinyl:
hip tunes, goofy lyrics
By MEREDITH PUGH
Contributing Writer
Real Life: “Lifetime* (Curb)
Think back, very far in your
mind, to the year that you were
in eighth or ninth grade.
Now think of the bands whose
tapes lived in your Walkman —
maybe Duran Duran, Berlin, Kn-
jagoogoo, The Go-Go’s, Madness,
The Talking Heads, and many
others. But do you remember an
Australian band called Real Life?
The band came out with a
■ingle in 1984 called “Send Me an
Angel” that rapidly climbed the
Top 40 charts and then fell back
down after a week or so. Then, in
1989, a remixed and revised ver
sion of “Send Me an Angel” was
released.
Now Real Life is back on the
dance scene with their fourth
album, “Lifetime.” The album
features David Sterry (vocals and
guitar), Steve Williams (key
boards), Allan Johnson (bass),
and Danny Simcic (drums). It is a
collection of processed digital
super dance tunes that will cer
tainly get your heart and lungs
pumping. Unfortunately, the ly
rics are not as effective as the
beat.
In “5-4-3-2-1” the lyrics are es
pecially mindless. Over and over,
the numbers are repeated to a
dance track that gets boring after
a while. Some of the other lyrics
don’t make sense or ore hard to
figure out as in “Kiss the
Ground."
Sterry sings, “Have vou ever
kissed an evolengelist, If he won’t
■ay please, Get him down on his
knees, with a message of love,
Sent down from heaven above,
And it’s so obscene, Maybe you
blaspheme.”
What’s so obscene? Sterry
doesn’t explain his philosophy in
the rest of the song.
“God Tonight,” “Kiss the
Ground” and “5-4-3-2-1” seem
heavily influenced by Informa
tion Society. The songs have a
steady, monotonous, rapid beat
which is excellent for dancing,
but would bore someone who was
listening to the lyrics.
After listening to the first
three songs, you might be sur
prised by “Rescue Me." If INXS is
your kind of band, then this is
your kind of song. The melody
sounds like INXS, the beat
sounds like INXS, Real Life uses
a synthesizer like INXS, and
even the voices sound like INXS.
And why not? Real Life opened
for INXS many times, as well as
Midnight Oil and The Church.
The lyrics of “Rescue Me”
aren’t too terribly bad either.
Sterry sings of a man who wants
someone to rescue him.
He sings, “And when I walk
into walls, If I fall in the sea, I’m
only thinking of you, what can I
do, the world is falling on me.”
“Push of Love” is another
super dance hit with fairly good
lyrics. Don’t be fooled by the liner
notes that state, “Backing vocals
on Tush of Love’ by the sensa
tional French Mistress of the
high priest of Bongo-Miquette Gi-
roudy.” The sensational French
Mistress doesn’t sing, she whis
pers four times at the beginning
of the song.
Overall, Real Life’s “Lifetime”
is definitely a step in the right di
rection. The band could benefit
from more lyrical depth in their
music, but they do quite well
with their funky bent and synthe
sized chords.
Dashboard Saviors inspired by rockers
By NOEL MURRAY
Entertainment Writer
People tend to get real antsy
when asked to describe the Dash
board Saviors. In a world of weird
musical genre combinations and
bands striving to be different, the
Saviors are unusual. They just
play rock and roll.
Following is an interview with
the Dashboard Saviors, who play
at the 40 Watt tonight.
Q: Is it an insult to compare your
music to classic Rolling Stones or
earlier Bruce Springsteen?
Todd McBride (Lead vocal,
Guitar): Not at all. No way. It’s
very silly for any band to think
they’re doing anything original.
We’re not afraid of comparisons.
Q: The last word I’d use to de
scribe you guys is “quirky.”
McBride: We try to be quirky
sometimes, but we end up looking
silly.
Q: Who are your heroes?
Rob Veal (Bass): You want a
list?
Q: Sure.
John Crist (Drums): Elvis
Costello, definitely. My favorite’s
XTC.
McBride: Neil Young and Crazy
Horse. Tom Petty. Green on Red...
Veal: Bob Dylan, admit it.
McBride: Okay, Bob Dylan.
Rob’s got his tickets.
Veal: If Mike (Gibson, guitar)
were here, he’d tell you Marshall
Crenshaw and Keith Richards.
Q: John, you’ve been called the
best drummer in town. Are you?
Crist: Not by a long shot. Herb
Guthrie from MGB is incredible.
You can’t beat having played on
the road for twenty years in small
clubs all over America. Playing
quiet. Playing quiet is really diffi
cult.
Q: What brings you guys to
Athens?
McBride: Ostensibly, I came
here to go to school. But also to be
in a band.
Crist: I dropped out of school to
come here to play drums.
Q: You’ve recently completed a
single for Bob Mould’s Singles Only
Label, produced by Peter Buck.
How was Peter to work with?
McBride: He’s a swell guy. A
fun guy to work with. And he loves
rock and roll so much that he al
ways knows what he’s doing.
Crist: Yeah, he’s real meticu
lous. One time he was reading a
newspaper on the couch in the
booth during mixing and all of a
sudden he put the paper down,
said, “A little more guitar in the
break before the third verse," and
went back to his paper. I didn’t
even know he was listening.
Dashboard Savior’s single, “All
Before” b/w ‘Town” will be released
sometime before Christmas just in
time to be a stocking stuffer. In the
meantime, the Saviors will be
holding midnight mass at the 40
Watt tonight.
