Save the homeless Athens animals
Love Tractor joins Humane Society for benefit of animals
By LEE FULFORD
Contributing Writer
How often in your lifetime do
you get the chance to save a cuddly
kitten from homelessness and abet
your auditory abolition all in the
same evening? Well, tonight you’ll
get this once in a lifetime opportu
nity with Love Tractor and the Hu
mane Society in an annual
marriage of feline, funds and friv
olity.
The Humane Society will be
holding their second annual fund—
raising benefit tonight at the
Georgia Theatre. This non-profit
organization will be selling tickets
and t—shirts to collect enough
money to cover operating expenses.
The headlining act of the show,
Love Tractor, is one of the origi
nators of the Athens progressive
style of music. Contemporaries of
both the B—62’s and R.E.M., they
are one of the most established
bands to emerge from the college
circuit.
Their six albums have received
great critical acclaim and their
latest, "Themes from Venus,” is no
exception.
They have been touring nation
wide and seldom come back to
Athens and play the clubs where
they got their start, so tonight’s
show at the Georgia will be a rare
occurence that should not be
missed.
The Athens Humane Society is a
self—supported shelter for cats,
exotic pets and wild animals. This
specialization is due to the fact
tnat the Georgia Animnl Control
ilv
rarely has shelter for cats.
Humane Society worker Lara
Littlejohn said, ''without us, there
would be no place for cats to go.”
Because it is funded entirely by
donations, the Humane Society is
being overwhelmed by the rising
cost of keeping their animals shel
tered.
They face the constant expense
of vaccinations, vet bills and food.
Littlejohn said the shelter can’t
keep its head above water without
help from the community.
She said all of the proceeds from
tonight’s benefit will go towards
keeping the doors open at the
shelter and to keeping the home
less cats off the streets.
Armistead Wellford of Love Tra
ctor said the band is very eager to
help out the Humane Society in
any way they can.

The evening will be hosted by
the king of Athens benefits, Jim
Stacey of the Labrea Stompers.
Two relatively new bands, The
Vultures and Creation Artefact,
will be playing with Love Tractor.
The vultures consist of Athens
veteran Paul Lombard (formerly of
Little Tigers,) Chris Hillsman and
former members of Billy James.
Littlejohn described them as "good
old-fashioned Athens rock and
roll.”
Creation Artefact is a "hot new
neo-psyche Athens band” that has
been playing the clubs of Atlanta
and Athens for the past year. This
will be their first show at the
Georgia Theater.
