broken leg was costly but the unit
has shown that they can play
without him.
“Our team was a lot more than
one player,” said Vince Dooley,
Georgia coach from 1964-88. “I
know all you people in the media
focused on Herschel but every
game had a different hero. For ex
ample, Scott Woemer single-hand
edly defeated Clemson that year
with his play. Everyone was a
hero.”
One last position comparison is
that of the kickers/punters. The
champs had Rex Robinson as their
place kicker and Mark Malkiewicz
as punter. These two were a key
part of the team as are John Kasey

The 1990 recruiting class has
often been compared to the 1980
class. It is yet to be seen if this is an
accurate assessment. The 1980
class had now-NFL players
Walker, Guy McIntyre, Terry
Hoage, and Clarence Kay.
The question still remains. Will
Garrison Hearst, Andre Hastings,

their high expectations? Only time
will tell.
Saturday marks the reunion of a
special Georgia football team. Who
knows? It may be the first and last
national champioship team the
University of Georgia will ever
have in football.
“You never know what’s going to
happen to a team,” Dooley said.
‘Ten years may seem like a long
time to some people, but really it
isn’t. In just 10 years college foot
ball has changed a great deal. We
now have more specialization on
offense with teams trying to spread
out the field more and we’ve seen
what has happened to academic
standards. But in the end you can’t
do anything without blocking and
tackling.”

If Georgia coach Ray Goff or any
other Bulldog feels that he needs
lessons on how to get the job done
on the football field, there will be
no better time to ask questions
than Saturday afternoon.
Because at halftime against Ole
Miss at Sanford Stadium,
Georgia’s 1980 national
championship team will celebrate
its 10-year reunion with a recogni
tion ceremony.
Over 70 players from the ’80
squad are expected to take part
along with their head coach Vince
Dooley and several of his assis
tants.
*That was a team with super
depth,” Georgia offensive coordi
nator George Heffner said. “You
just don’t seem to see all of the el
ements fall together like that any
more.”
Haffner, who has been at
Georgia since 1980, is one of five
assistants remaining from the ’80
team. Defensive line coach Steve
Greer, kicking coach Bill Hartman,
tight ends coach Charles Whitte-
more, and conditioning coach John
Kasay round out the list.
As of early last week, it was not
known if Herschel Walker,
George Haffner
Georgia’s leader in many rushing
categories, would be in attendance.
Walker, along with five other
players from the championship
squad, is obligated to a National
Football League team (Minnesota
Vikings).
The others committed to the
NFL are Terry Hoage (Philadel
phia), Guy McIntyre and Wayne
Radloff (San Francisco), and Clar
ence Kay (Denver).
Wide receiver Lindsay Scott,
widely known for his last minute
93-yard touchdown reception
against Florida in 1980 to keep
Georgia undefeated, is now an as
sistant coach at Valdosta State and
because his team plays Saturday
he won’t take part in the cele
bration. Likewise, center Hugh
Nall will be absent because of his
assistant coaching responsibilities
at Texas Christian University.
Quarterback Buck Belue, who in
1980 led the Southeastern Confer
ence in passing efficiency, will par
ticipate along with much of his
offensive supporting cast.
*The first thing I thought about
when preparing for the reunion is
that we are all getting a hell of a lot
older,” Belue laughed.
Belue now markets high school
graduation paraphernalia with his
brother in Valdosta, Ga.
Other offensive members par
taking in the event are: linemen
Tim Morrison, Jeff Harper, Nat
Hudson, Joe Happe, and Jim Blea-
kewood, running backs Barry
Young, Jimmy Womack, and
Ronnie Stewart, and wide re
ceivers Amp Arnold, Norris Brown,
Chuck Jones, and Charles Junior.
All-America placekicker Rex
Robinson ana punter Jim
Broadway will also be present.
Though portions of the offense
won’t be able to make the trip to
Athens, the entire defensive unit
will be on hand. It consists of: De
fensive ends Robert Miles and Pat
McShea, defensive guards Eddie
Weaver and Tim Crowe, defensive
tackle Jimmy Payne, linebackers
Nate Taylor and FYank Ros, rover-
back Chris Welston, comerbacks
Mike Fisher and Scott Woemer,
and safety Jeff Hipp.
“I am so thrilled about the
turnout we will have,” Dooley said.
“We will have about 85 percent of
that team out there. I suspect some
of the participants will get emo
tionally stirred. Not me though. I
coached for eight more years. I’m
too old for that."
Georgia capped of the
championship season by defeating
Notre Dame 17-10 in the Sugar
Bowl to finish at 12-0.
