at the Downtown Development Authority and at the door.
James Belushi meets ‘Mr. Destiny’ tonight at Beechwood
40 WATT
• Oct. 12: Greenhouse plays an
energetic, hard pop set, but they
run out of good material after
about 20 minutes. Given time, they
could develop into one of Athens’s
great bands. Minneapolis’s
Toadstool plays also.
• Oct. 13: Late Night Disco. Boogie
nights.
• Oct. 15: Mike Church Dance
Party.
• Oct. 16: The sweet pop country of
28 Days after the buzzing rock
rhythms of The Violets.
• Oct. 17: Cordy Lon writes very
interesting, intricate songs, but
their performances are often hard
to listen to due to the tricky nature
of David Levitt’s voice and Beth
Hale’s cello. They're definitely
worth seeing, nonetheless. They
open for the literate but dull
‘Mr. Destiny’: The ordinary Larry Burrows (James Belushi) has the chance to change
past mistakes in his life when he meets a mysterious stranger (Michael Caine).
Vigilantes of Love.
• Oct. 18: Loads of grunge with Dirt
and Daisy.
GEORGIA THEATRE
• Oct. 12: Johnny Quest funk it up.
• Oct. 13: Ort’s favorite Col. Bruce
Hampton is an Athens legend. He
plays off-beat country blues that is
as American as a loan payment.
• Oct. 15: Reggae legends Black
Uhuru. Reggae is always best live.
The chances of achieving spiritual
ecstasy this night are good.
• Oct. 17: Check this. Mercyland,
Vic Chestnutt, LaBrea Stompers,
and Liqour Cabinet in a benefit for
candidate Will Jackson. Four
bucks. Four great bands. You’d be
a fool to miss it.
• Oct. 18: A psychedelic snack of
Phlsh. And cows.
ROCKFISH PALACE
• Oct. 12-13: What you oughta do
is Follow For Now. This intense rock
band now has a record deal with
Chrysalis and is preparing to take
over the world. Give them your
money on Friday or Saturday so
that you'll be on their good side
when they do.
• Oct. 17: Waylaid searches and
destroys. Sklndeep opens.
• Oct. 18: Ital U.S.A.
DOWNSTAIRS
• Oct. 12: M agister Ludi plays a
very nice collection of airy pop
tunes. Quite tight and quite good.
Bloomsbury Group opens.
• Oct. 13: Five-Eight plays acoustic.
Yeah, right. I’ve never seen an
acoustic Five-Eight show where
the acoustic part lasted more than
a half-hour. After that, Mike gets
frustrated and rips out the electric.
In either format, though, this trio
is still the best.
• Oct. 15: Song Swap. Plus, on
Monday’s, it’s only a buck for
Mickey’s Big Mouths, the finest
malt liquor on the planet.
• Oct. 16: Everything gives you
Cancer. Refuse Factory opens.
• Oct. 17: Bloodkln rocks.
• Oct. 18: Shackler doesn’t.

TATE CENTER THEATER
• Oct. 12-13: Dick Tracy. Visually
stunning and intellectually
bankrupt, this movie leans on flash
over story and somehow pulls it off.
• Oct. 12-13 midnight: Bill and Ted's
Excellent Adventure. If you were
Napolean, where would you go?
•Oct. 14: Spetters. Before Paul
Verhoeven came to America and
made ‘Total Recall” and “Robocop,”
he spent his time crafting sensual
Dutch art films and building the
career of Rutger Hauer. This tale of
bicycles and adulthood is sure to be
a winner.
•Oct. 17: Some Like It Hot. Even
Marilyn Monroe was a man, but
this tends to get overlooked.
•Oct. 18: Hannah and Her Sisters. Is
this the best Woody Allen film?
That’s like asking, “Is this the best
filet mignon?” Quality is quality.
CLASSIC TRIPLE
• Ghost. Believe.
• Narrow Margin. I think I’ve
slammed this movie enough.
• State of Grace. Anotha gangsta
fairytale. See “Goodfellas" first.
• Problem Child. If you feel the urge
to 9ee this movie, try this instead:
Point a gun at the back of your
head, aim at the base of the skull,
and pull the trigger. You'll have a
much better time.
GEORGIA SQUARE
• Memphis Belle. Matthew Modine,
Eric Stolz and Harry Connick, Jr.
in his first film role. It’s about
bombers and buddies. Looks
entertaining.
• Flatliners. It’s a good day to die.
• Postcards From the Edge. Come
see Gene Hackman in a good movie
• Desperate Hours. Michael Cimino
directs Mickey Rourke in a
different role for him — an intense
psychopath. That kind of acting
stretch takes courage.
LEFONT BEECHWOOD
• Presumed Innocent. As the jury
remains sequestered....
• Darkman. He’s mean, he’s ugly
and he’s learning to live with a lot
of things.
• Mr. Destiny. What if Jim Belushi
hadn’t struck out in his high school
championship baseball game.
Would his life be any different?
Hmmmmmmmm.
• Goodfellas. THE Mob Movie, at
least until “Miller’s Crossing”
makes it here. For added fun, rent
“Mean Streets” and compare.

Cordy Lon: The threesome will weave their tricky,
intricate tunes at the 40 Watt Wednesday. Oct. 17.
I'll say this, though: This is pretty
finely cooked filet mignon — tender
and juicy and seasoned just so.
(P.S. For you vegetarians, the film
also makes a nice carrot dog.)
