Spikers harvesting
good October season
By LYA WODRASKA
Sports Writer
The Georgia volleyball team
proved coach Jim lams right when
he predicted they would have a
“good October'’ following their Oct.
6 win over Florida.
The Dogs (16-7, 2-1 in the SEC)
are playing with more confidence
afler playing inconsistently the
first half of the season.
“We’re playing more consistently
and more aggressively than we
were earlier,” lams said. ‘The
freshmen have gotten some experi
ence pnd the players that are
playinffnew positions have worked
out theBnks. Our goal is to win
the rest of our SEC matches and
finish no less than second.”
The Spikers moved two steps
closer to that goal afler defeating
Alabama and Auburn last
weekend.
The Dogs needed only 52 min
utes to defeat Alabama 15-4, 15-1,
15-1 last Friday.
“It was the first time in a long
time that we sustained a good
match from start to finish,” lams
said. “We came out and played
strong right from the beginning
and never let them into the match
It’s hard to win the third game
afler winning two straight and I
was pleased to see that we were
able to.”
Freshman Lenore Davis led the
offense with 12 kills while Christie
Lord contributed nine to the team
total of 44. Lenore Davis led the de
fense with 10 of the team’s 32 digs.
Georgia wrapped up the
weekend with a win at Auburn by a
score of 15-7, 15-12, 14-16, 15-10.

play Georgia and we just didn’t
play as aggressively as we did
against Alabama,” lams said. “Au
burn did a good job blocking us. I’m
generally not one to say a win is a
win, but I was glad to take that
one.”
Davis and Lord again paced the
offense by contributing 15 kills
each, while freshman Ashley Cook
made 14 digs against the Tiger of
fense.
The Dogs,currently ranked third

Dogs have wishbone to pick with Commodores
By GENE WILLIAMS
Sports Writer
The good news for the battered
Georgia Bulldog defensive unit is
that they won’t be facing another
team that runs the option of
fense.
The bad news is that home
coming opponent Vanderbilt (1-4)
uses the wishbone.
Coach Ray Goff said that each
individual on the defense, which
has given up 633 yards on the
ground against Clemson and
Mississippi, needs to concentrate
more on sticking to their respec
tive duties to stop the ground
giving.
‘Vanderbilt runs a lot of full
back loads out of their wishbone
and we haven’t seen that much of
the wishbone set," Goff said.
‘There are some differences in
the way they run their sets and
well have to prepare for that this
week in practice.”
The Commodore rushing at
tack is potent and radically dif
ferent from the air show they
usually employ. Last season,
Vandy threw for 299 yards
against the Bulldogs, hut this
season figures to be different.
Vandy’s rushing attack is cu-
rently ranked 38th in the nation
and the fourth in the SEC, aver
aging 178 yards a game. The
ground forces are led by quar
terback Marcus Wilson, who has
rushed for 165 yards on 46 car
ries. When Wilson doesn’t keep
the ball, he pitches it to tailback
Mark Johnson (22 carries for 165
yards) or Corey Hams (20 carries
for 112 yards). Fullback Carlos
Thomas has chipped in another
129 yards on 30 carries.
Cornerback A1 Jackson said he
hopes that Georgia has figured
out the pitch offense and is ready
to stop the Commodore ground
attack.
“Maybe this time everybody
will know their assignments,”
Jackson said. “It should be
second nature by this week.”
Jackson said that defending
the option and the wishbone are
simular and if the defenders do
not execute, it causes big plays.
“For the most part, it is the re
sponsibility of the defensive
linemen and the inside line
backers to hit the fullback up the
middle,” Jackson said. ‘Then the
cornerback has to cover the pitch
man to the outside and the out
side linebacker covers the quar
terback. What happened last
week was that the free safety and
the strong safety weren’t filling
in the gaps behind us."
Vandy will also throw out of
the wishbone or break the bone
into a two or one-back set and go
with quarterback Mike Healey.
With 40 completions in 58 at
tempts for 501 yards, and six
touchdown passes, Healey is the
SEC’s highest-rated passer.
Bulldog Bites:
Garrison Hearst will start
again at tailback and Greg
Talley will start at quarterback
for the Bulldogs Saturday.
Freshman claims she quit before dismissal
Latricia Drake, the freshman
basketball player dismissed
Monday by coach Andy Landers for
violating team requirements,
claims a knee injury kept her from
participating in the team's pre
season conditioning drills.
“I had a knee injury, and I was
scared I would mess it up,” Drake
stud. “I guess he thought I was
using it as an excuse.”
Landers said Tuesday that part
of the reason Drake was dismissed
was because she only made two of
16 pre-season conditioning ses
sions. Landers also said that Drake
missed school assignments and
academic meetings.
“We don’t allow our players to
miss class,” Landers said.
Drake said she actually quit the
team before Landers dismissed
her, and she plans to remain in
school even though she is no longer
associated with the team.
The 6-1 Drake was a Parade All-
American and Miss Basketball in
Georgia for Morrow High School
last year. She averaged 13.2
points, 12.8 rebounds and 6.2
blocks per game her senior year
while leading Morrow to the
Georgia Class A A A A
championship in 1990.
Drake’s dismissal leaves the
Lady Dogs with only three post
players for the 1990-91 season. Se
niors Tammye Jenkins, Stacey
Ford and sophomore Jessica Barr
remain as the front-court players
for Landers.
“We’ll definitely use a three-
guard offense and possibly a four-
guard offense this year,” Landers
said.
