TEAM/COACH: Auburn Tigers
(5VPat Dye
RECORD: 4-0-1, 2-0-1 T finit
place
GAME TIUS WEEK: Florida
State at home 7:30 p.m. EDT
STATUS: After conservatively
electing to go for the extra point
and not two against Tennessee a
month ago to ensure a tie, and by
defeating Vanderbilt last week,
Auburn finds itself deadlocked in
First place with the Volunteers.
The Tigers still have four confer
ence games remaining including
its in-state clash with Alabama the
last week of the season.
SEC ST AT TALK: Auburn is the
SEC’s number one ranked team in
total ofTense. Rushing— James Jo
seph is fourth in yards per game
with 73.5. Darrell Williams is 10th
with a 46.4 yard-per game average.
Quarterback— Freshman Stan
White is second in the conference
with 1,275 passing yards and has
completed over 57 percent of his
passesJUceiving— Greg Taylor is
second in total receiving yards and
yards per game with 430 and 86 re
spectively. Shayne Wasden is 11th
in receiving yards per game with
39. Kicking— Jim Von Wyl is fifth
in the conference with six field
goals made. Richie Nell’s 33-yard
punt average is 11th. Defense—Au
burn also has the number-one
ranked defense in the conference,
allowing just 237 yards per game.
Dennis Wallnce is tied for fourth in
the conference with two intercep
tions.
TEAM/COACII: Tennessee Vol
unteers (3)/Johnny Majors
RECORD: 4-0-2, 2-0-1 T first
GAME THIS WEEK: Alabama at
home 4 p.m. EDT
STATUS: The Volunteers are
coming off of a 45-3 slaughtering of
17th-ranked Florida and are tied
with Auburn for first place. The
Vols’ tie against Auburn was the
teum’s second of the season, the
first coming against Colorado in
August. Tennessee, like Auburn,
has four conference games left in
cluding a game against 18th-
ranked Ole Miss Nov. 17. If the
Volunteers win the rest of their
games, they should get the Sugar
Bowl bid because of their high na
tional ranking.
SEC STAT TALK: The Volunteers
are the SEC’s second-ranked team
in total offense with 439 yards per
game. Rushing — Tony Thompson
leads the conference with 608 total
yards and 101 yards per game.
Quarterback — Andy Kelly is
ranked third with 960 passing
yards. Receiving — Carl Pickens
and Alvin Harper are third and
fourth in the conference with 67

RECORD: 5-1, 3-1 not eligible for
title
GAME Tins WEEK: Akron at
home 1:30 p.m. EDT
STATUS: Because of Florida’s vio
lation of several NCAA rules last
year, the Gators are not eligible for
a Sugar Bowl berth. In his first
year at the helm, Spurrier, who
previously coached at Duke, has
implemented an effective passing
attack that has ennbled Florida to
make movement in the Top 25.
Florida has three conference
gnmes left including meetings with
Georgia and Auburn.

TEAM/COACII: Louisiana State
Tigers/Mike Archer
RECORD: 3-2, 1 -2 T fourth place
GAME THIS WEEK: Kentucky at
home 8 p.m. EDT
STATUS: Though not over
whelming, the Tigers’ record this
year is a vast improvement over
last season. Chad Loup has effecti
vely filled the shoes of the departed
