the Chinese Painting Studio at the Fine Arts Institute in Tianjin,
China, will demonstrate the basics of Chinese art philosophy
Monday at 7;30 p.m. In Room 116 of the Tate Student Center.
‘Beggarweeds’ in town; worth yanking
TATE CENTER THEATER
• Oct. 19-20: House Party. Highly
praised, energetic film about
African-American teens trying to
have fun.
• Oct. 19-20 midnight: Robocop. HI
buy that for a dollar. Or two. This
futuristic satire is an unlikely
classic.
•Oct. 21: Twilight of the
Cockroaches. Yayl Animation
Week begins! This Japanese movie
is only partially animated, but it
makes a nice segue into the coolest
week of the year.
•Oct. 23: Sleeping Beauty. Disney
great about a narcoleptic girl who
finds true love.
•Oct. 10: Allegro Non Troppo.
Italian animation explosion that
acts as a sort of parody of
“Fantasia.” A rare chance to
compare the two, given that the
parent film is showing now at the
mall.
•Oct. 11: The 22nd Tournee of
Animation. These animation
festival thingys are always a treat.
MOVIES IN TOWN
ALPS
• Die Hard 2 — Die Harder.
Testosterone Fest *90. Not a bad
movie but not a great one either. It
certainly can’t touch the original,
but it’s kinda cool to make fun of.
Stack ’em, rack ’em and pack ’em.
• Duck Tales: The Movie. Mildly
clever animated adventure. Better
than most modern kidflicks, but a
little lacking in imagination and
wonder.
■ AFTER HOURS
CLASSIC TRIPLE
• Ghost. The biggest hit of the
summer keeps on swinging.
• Night of the Living Dead. A
remake. The original was great, so
who knows?
• Taking Care of Business. The
Classic continues its two-week-old
tradition of resurrecting lousy
summer movies.
GEORGIA SQUARE
• Young Guns II. Decent movie.
Crappy soundtrack.
• Flatliners.No one’s coming to see
this anymore. Get it off the screen.
• Postcards From the Edge. The
scene where Meryl Streep and
Shirley MacLaine have a singing
duel is a wonderfully subtle movie
moment.
• Fantasia. Reason 3 to see this
movie — the sod little centaur who
can’t find a woman.
• Death Warrant. Martial arts
prison flick that may be making
some point about racism and
prison reform, but who cares? It is
nice to see Robert Guillaume
working again, though.
• Desperate Hours. Here’s another
great double feature idea —
Washed-Up Directors. Start with
this grating thriller by Michael
‘The Deer Hunter” Cimino ...
• Pacific Heights.. .. and follow it up
with this dry, suspenseless movie
by John “Midnight Cowboy”
Schlesinger.
• Marked for Death. Blah Stephen
Seagall movie made by the
numbers. I get the feeling that at
some point the creators said, “I
know what'll get this movie going
...some JAMAICANS!”
Yaaaaaaawn.
• Memphis Belle. Does NOT “crash
and burn.” Rather, it’s an
entertaining war film that rises
above its cliches.
• Blood Fist 2.
LEFONT BEECHWOOD
• Presumed Innocent. Okay, I
confess. I did it. It’s unhealthy to
dwell on these things.
• Goodfellas. The great thing about
this movie is the way it portrays a
creeping paranoia. I mean if your
“friends” killed for the slightest
reason, wouldn’t you watch your
back, too? Fascinating stuff.
• Mr. Destiny. What are we, in love
with Jim Belushi? He has two
movies this week. This is so
frustrating.
• Quigley Down Under. Tom Selleck
in Australia.

MUSIC IN TOWN
40 WATT
• Oct. 19: Kilkenny Cats is a dark,
edgy rock band. Not bad, but
basically uninvolving. Mombo Fury
opens.
• Oct. 20: Liquor Cabinet captures
the feeling of a roadhouse band
after too many whiskey sours.
The/ve obviously listened to the
first New York Dolls album more
than once. Erratic, but passionate.
• Oct. 22: Mark Wallace Dance
Party. Arise! There’s dancing afoot!
• Oct. 23: Show of the Week? Odds
are on the melodic power of
Michael Guthrie, opening for the
incredible Beggarweeds. This
Jacksonville bond is a good reason
to live. They’re rooted in the
swamp rock traditions of
Creedence Clearwater Revival and
the Chickasaw Mudd Puppies. I
would go so far as to say that God
is acting through them, to bring
rock ecstasy to the world. DO NOT
MISS.
GEORGIA THEATRE
• Oct. 19: Dread Zeppelin is a three-
joke band and none of them are
funny. The gimmick here is a
reggae band doing Led Zeppelin
covers with an Elvis impersonator.
Now, if the musicians had any love
for Zep, Elvis or reggae, they
mighfve realized the tremendous
fun potential here. But instead,
they plod along on the concept
alone and realize
nothing.Strawberry Zots open.
• Oct. 20: The Grapes. The fruit’s
good.
• Oct. 22 Johnny Clegg & Savuka.
Worldbeat love is the only love.
• Oct. 23: Masters of Reality.
Features Ginger Baker of Cream
fame.
ROCKFISH PALACE
• Oct. 19: Hillbilly Frankenstein and
The Woggles. Here are two bands
that do love what they play. The
Woggles plug the spirit of garage
music into their own warped soul.

• Oct. 19: (Special Guest Bit by
Coleen Brooks, Entertainment
Editor) — Don’t miss the chance to
see two new-ish local bands kick
some serious butt. Underground
plays “guitar-influenced rock with
a progressive edge.” The Stonesouls
“are sort of Rolling Stones meet the
Black Crowes.” Come on down and
check it out for yourself.
• Oct. 20: Substitutes.
DOWNSTAIRS
• Oct. 19: Dashboard Saviors are as
solid as they come. Basic rock with
a smidgen of country. Great lyrics,
too.
• Oct. 20: Opal Foxx Quartet and
Pez. Two more bands that don’t
take themselves seriously, but
generate a lot of fun.
• Oct. 22: Blue Plate Special
Benefit.
• Oct. 23: The traditional stylings
of George and Moira.
• Oct. 25: Roosevelt is always
worth seeing, if only to watch
Ballard — a fantastic drummer in
a band where drums are
practically a lead instrument.
Making the show even more
special is the inclusion of
Beggarweeds. As stated above, the
Weeds rock. Their five-song ep
“Sure Pants Alot” is also essential,
if you can find it.
