Spr
Comeback" (Kitchenware-Epic)
For those who complain about
the state of modem pop music, I
offer up “Jordan: The Comeback”
as both a defense and a condemna
tion of the genre. Prefab Sprout’s
first album in almost five years is a
bright, winning collection of metic
ulously crafted poptones designed
to caress cranky eardrums every
where.
From their first eponymous EP
in 1983, Prefab Sprout has been
creating sophisticated adult con
temporary music. Comparisons to
Steely Dan inevitably arise, but
that’s* a bit off-base.
I see Prefab Sprout more as a
mutant hybrid of Big Star’s ‘Third
Album" and a glass of ice water.
It’s melodic, crisp and extraordi
narily distant.
Distance is what defines lead
singer Paddy McAloon’s lyrics. All
the songs on “Jordan: The
Comeback” deal with relationships
in an aloof, witty manner.
One of the great bits of sarcasm
on the record is the song “All the
World Loves Lovers” and its coda /
companion piece “All Boys Believe
Anything.”
“You and I won’t lose our heads /
The way some lovers do / saying: /
This will last forever / when it’s /
just a day or two.”
Yeah, right. McAloon is winking
at corny pop songs while at the
same time crooning a tune that
would not be out of place on Top 40.

Taken in the context of the rest of
the album, it’s obviously a gag. I
said up top that the songs are me
ticulously crafted and that’s very
true. Like all great pop songs,
these songs have “parts , as in:
“Shut up for a second, this is my fa
vorite part.”
There’s the barrelhouse piano on
“Moondog,” the salsa horns on
“Carnival 2000," the cheezy bolero
synths on “Jesse James” — these
are all great parts. The best thing
about “Jordan: The Comeback,"
though, is the inspired production
by Thomas Dolby.
Dolby has long been the most
underrated pop producer, partly
because he doesn’t get much work
and partly because his own songs
have become pretty slight over the
years. It’s such a delight to see him
hanging nice flourishes all over
McAloon’s clever songs. "Jordan:
The Comeback” is a rich dessert
and it can be hard to devour at one
sitting. Ideally, these songs were
made to be played on pop radio but
the chances of them breaking
through are slim.
Contemporary Hits program
mers seem to sny away from pure
popsters like XTC, Marshall
Crenshaw, Squeeze and Prefab
Sprout. If these bands were heard
more often, they’d probably suc
ceed.

Animation not just for kids
By NOEL MURRAY
Entertainment Writer
It’s just that time of the year.
People are a little nicer. Coffee
tastes a little better. Mops clean
a little more thorougly. And ev
erywhere, across the campus, lips
are abuzz with talk of animation.
It’s Animation Week at the
Tate Theatre, the coolest week of
the year.
Tnis week, the Cinematic Arts
branch of the University Union
offers the student body a won
derful chance to pursue the
varied and engaging world of an
imation. The festival begins
today with “Sleeping Beauty”
and continues through Sunday.
John Finklea, head of Cine
matic Arts, said “Sleeping
Beauty” is an interesting Disney
feature because, “it’s the only
Disney done in Technorama, the
animated version of Cinerama.
Which basically means it’s a
really big cartoon.”
On Wednesday is “Allegro Non
Troppo,” which Finklea described
as “an updated Italian Tantasia’-
-an answer to that film. It’s a col
lection of short animated pieces
set to the music of Debussy, Vi
valdi, Bach, et cetera. It’s funny ”
The third piece in the festival
is “The XXIInd Tournee of An
imation,” a collection of short an
imated pieces that is a festival in
its own right. It features stop art
and animation from around the
world and includes new works by
Bill Plympton and Olive Jar An
imation.
‘These animation collections
are always successful,” claimed
Finklea.
Animation Week,
which begins today,
offers a fare of
amazing works that
are hard to see
anywhere else.
The animated films for Friday
and Saturday are “Akira” and
“Heavy Metal.” “Akira” played in
Atlanta last spring and garnered
high praise from Atlanta critics
and Athenians who drove up to
see it.
“Excluding Disney, this is one
of the greatest animated films of
all time,” said Shannon Stewart,
manager of Wuxtry Comics. “The
animation is just dazzling and
the story is authentic to the comic
books.”
“Akira” is a Japanese cyber
punk fantasy (dubbed into En-
? ;lish) about rival bike gangs in a
uturistic, violent world. The film
is action packed and densely an
imated. Finklea said he would
like to stress that it’s an adult
cartoon and that when it was
originally submitted to the
MPAA, it received an X rating.
“It is extremely violent, but it
has some of the best animaton
I’ve ever seen,” Finklea said.
“Heavy Metal” will be the mid
night movie on Friday and Sat
urday. It’s, essentially, an
animated version of the sci-fi fan
tasy comic magazine.
On Sunday is the last film of
animation week, “Vampires in
Havana.” It tells the story of a
professor who creates a chemical
that allows vampires to go out in
the daytime. “Vampires” is a
Cuban film, with English sub
titles, and is rarely seen in this
country.
In all, another winning
package from Cinematic Arts.
These are the kinds of movies
that are a genuine treat to see,
and should be part of anyone’s
college experience. Not even At
lanta has all these movies in one
week.
