Aggressive spikers take two
By LYA WODRASKA

The usual stern-looking Georgia
volleyball coach Jim lams was ac
tually smiling last weekend as his
Spikers defeated Mississippi State
and Ole Miss.
Georgia upped its record to 18-7
, 4-1 SEC with a hard-fought win
over Ole Miss (7-7) Sunday 15-11,
13-15, 15-6, 15-9.
The Dogs started the match slow
but lams was pleased his team
played aggressively enough to
come from behind and win the first
game.

Mississippi is a good team and they
ady to play,” lams sa *

were ready to play,” lams said. “We
are learning to play aggressively
when we are behind,
layed this well Friday night (vs.
'iss. St.) we would have been fin
ished even sooner.”
Christie Lord continued to rip
apart opponents’ defenses as she
led the team in kills with 20 to
wards the team’s 72.
“Georgia is solid from top to
bottom but our inability to stop
Christie Lord in the middle hurt us
the most,” Ole Miss coach John
Blair said.
Lord also helped out the defense
by making 13 of the total 68 digs.
Friday evening Georgia easily
defeated Mississippi State (12-8)
15-5, 15-5, 15-7 but didn’t play
quite as aggressively as lams
would have liked.
“It wasn’t quite as aggressive as
I would have liked but we were
more relaxed,” he said. “The pace
was a little slower than I wanted
but sometimes you get caught into
a certain flow with the way the
other team is playing.”
The Bulldog’s strong serving
game played a big part in keeping
Mississippi State out of the match.
Kristin Hackley led the team
with three aces while Franci Rard-
contributed two to the team total of
10 aces.
‘The serving game made the big
gest difference,” MSU coach Mike
Tucker said. ‘They were able to
keep us out of offense because they
served so aggressively.”

has faced this season that relies on

stead of hitting it over, but the
Spikers were able to stop MSU’s
tipping after struggling against it
earlier in the match.
“We didn’t pick it up as soon as
we should have but I think it’s a
matter of being alert and being
prepared for it, lams said.
Hard led the offense with nine
kills and Sue Novak made seven
kills as the offense totaled 43 kills.
The Spikers will take their six-
match winning streak, their
longest of the season, to Florida
(10-11) and Florida State (17-7)
this weekend. Georgia has already
defeated both teams earlier this
season and lams sees the up
coming matches as measuring
sticks to see how well his Spikers
have improved over the season.
“This will be a big weekend for
us,” lams said. “We have to beat
Florida if we want to hold our posi
tion in the SEC and FSU is a good
solid team. It’s good for us to play
both teams again to see if we’re
playing better than we were at the
beginning of the season.”
SEC meets to study divisions
From Staff and Wire Reports
SEC DIVISIONS
Various SEC officials and ath
letic directors meet Monday in
Atlanta to discuss the the future
alignment of the Southeastern
Conference. Although nothing
was officially decided, it is be

based on geography. The divi
sions are expected to consist of an
Eastern division and a Western
division.

points in four 10 minute quar
ters. Senior center Neville Austin
also looked impressive playing
aggressive underneath the hoop
scoring six points and pulling
down six rebounds. Shaun
Golden and Litterial Green also
poured in 12 points each.
Throughout the scrimmage,
Georgia coach Hugh Durham
switched teams around in order
to experiment with different com
binations of players.
In the final quarter, Durham,
unhappy with the play of Mar
shall Wilson, escorted the senior
forward off the floor and into the
corridor near the locker rooms,
where he loudly lectured the
player.
