Netters still jinxed;
lose 22nd to Cardinal
By RANDY WALKER
Sports Editor
Last year at the Riviera All-
American Tennis Championships
in Pacific Palisades, Calif.,
Georgia’s Stacey Schefflin de
feated Stanford’s Teri Whitlinger
6-4, 6-2 in a third-round match.
While this match warranted no
special significance at the time,
tne passing year has now shown
the victory to be the last win in 22
matches for a Georgia player over
a player from Stanford.
The trend continued this
weekend through the 1990 Riv
iera Championships as two Stan
ford singles players and a
Stanford doubles team all
bounced Georgia players from
the tournament.
“It’s taken the best team in the
country to beat us,” said Wallace,
whose team is ranked No. 4 in
the pre-season.
“We’re trying hard to over
throw them, and we’re coming
closer every time.”
The Cardinal’s No. 6 player
from a year ago, Heather Willens,
fought off two matches in an
upset ofTourth-seeded Shannan
McCarthy in the second round 4-
6, 7-6 (8-6) 6-3.
Luckily for Georgia,
Stanford is not in the
SEC.
Debbie Graham, the defending
NCAA singles champion and top-
seeded player, defeated Caryn
Moss 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfi
nals.
Georgia’s doubles team of
Shannan and Shawn McCarthy
were defeated by Graham and
Sandra Birch in the first round 6-
4, 6-4.
“We’re going to look as this
weekend as another step,” Wal
lace said. “We’re going to keep
working. We’re right there and
it’s coming.”
In the singles final, Graham
was defeated by her teammate
Birch, the 1989 NCAA champion,
6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Graham and Birch
then teamed for the doubles title
defeating Deborah Edelman and
Stephanie Reece of Indiana 6-3,
6-1.
To reach the quarterfinals,
Moss defeated both San Diego’s
Tonya Fuller and Pepperdine’s
Janna Kovacevich in three sets.
Tennis dogs stumble in Volvo
By RANDY WALKER

As all four of Georgia’s representatives failed to
reach the finals of pre-qualifying this weekend at the
Volvo Tennis Cqllegiate Championships at Henry
Feild Stadium, Georgia coach Manuel Diaz is feeling a
little concerned.
“I don’t think at this time we’re the fifth-best team
in the country,” Diaz said. “We’ve demonstrated this
week that we’ve got a long way to go.”
Georgia players Bobby Mariencheck, Hector Ne-
vares, David Wolf and Jack Frierson, the projected
bottom half of the 1990-91 Bulldog line-up, were all
bounced in the early rounds of pre-qualifying.
Mariencheck was defeated by Ryan Clark of Illinois
6-7, 7-6, 6-1 in the second round while Hector Nevares
lost to Yaser Zaatini of East Te nnessee State 3-6, 6-3,
6-3. Frierson was forced to default in the second round
to Sean Ferriera of N.C. State due to a nagging knee
injury. Wolf, who was recovering from an illness in
curred last week, lost to Axel Schulze of UAB in the
first round 6-1, 6-1.
Traditionally, depth has been the strength of the
Georgia tennis team. The netters have annually pos-
sesed some of the best Number four, five and six
players in the country. However, after this weekend’s
play, Diaz feels there is room for improvement.
“It depends on how we’re gonna go about it,
whether we really want to achieve our potential, or
whether we want to work as hard was we need to,”
Diaz said.
VOLVO ACTION: Eight players qualified for
Tuesday’s main qualifying tournament with final
round pre-qaulifying victories Monday. North Caro
lina’s Andre Janasik, Thomas Tanner and Chris
Mumford all advanced into main qualifying with
straight set victories. Tanner defeated Pat Boies of
UNLV 6-4, 6-1, Janasik defeated Gary Finnegan of
Florida 7-5, 6-1 while Mumford bested Joakim Ap-

pleqvist of Samford 6-3, 6-4. Also qualifying were Ste
phan Mather of Kentucky, Mike Knowles of Ole Miss,
Chuck Coleman of Notre Dame, Mike Hegarty of Au
burn, and Alex Lindholm of Anderson Junior College.
Georgia’s Patricio Arnold will begin play in the main
qualifying today at 11:30 when he takes on Coleman.
MAIN DRAW SET: Georgia’s A1 Parker will take
on San Diego State’s Ricardo Herrera Thursday in the
first round of the Volvo Tennis Collegiate
Championships. Parker, the defending Volvo Cham
pion, is the fourth-ranked seed in the tournament.
