Baron, Parker advance to second round in Volvo
By RANDY WALKER
Sports Editor
Thursday was a zone-out, zone-
in day for Georgia freshman Ivan
Baron in his opening round match
at the Volvo Tennis Collegiate
Championship s at Henry Feild
Stadium.
In defeating Cal-Santa Bar
bara’s David Decret 7-6 (7-3), 7-5,
Baron came back from a 4-1 first-
set deficit, and a 5-1 second-set def
icit to advance into Friday’s second
round against Notre Dame’s David
DiLucia.
Georgia’s A1 Parker also ad
vanced into the second round with
a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Ricardo Her
rera of San Diego State. Patricio
Arnold, who qualified for the main
draw with two wins on Wednesday,
was defeated by Alex O’Brien of
Stanford 6-4, 6-2.
Baron “zoned-out” dropping four
of the first five games to go down
two service breaks in the first set,
but battled back to force a tie-
break. Baron hit four passing shots
in the breaker, including a cross
court, backhand drive on set-point
to win the tie-break 7-3.
Baron lapsed again falling be
hind by two service breaks, before
saving six set points en route to
winning the final six games of the
match.
“I played well enough to win, but
I didn’t play my best tennis," Baron
said. “When I was down, I tried to
take my time and play each point
at a time. If I didn’t take my time,
he probably would have won.”
“Ivan did a great job coming
back two times,” Georgia coach
Manuel Diaz said. “But he got him
self in a hole two times. His concen
tration was very spotty and he dug
himself in almost too deep a hole."
Like Baron, Parker also encoun
tered moments of mental numb
ness as well as troubles finding a
groove on his groundstrokes in nis
first-round win.
Leading Herrera 6-4,4-0, Parker
began to play more erratic, com
mitting nine of his 18 unforced er
rors in the last six games of the
match.
“Herrera is a tough player to get
a groove on," said Parker, the tour
nament’s No. 4 seed and defending
champion. “I didn’t hit my
groundstrokes too well today. I
need to concentrate better and
can’t have any more mental
lapses.”
Parker will take on Marcos
Garzo of Fresno State at 10:30 a.m.
in Friday’s second round. Baron’s
match with DiLucia is scheduled
for 9 a.m.
In other Volvo Action
Top-seeded Jonathan Stark of
Stanford played his first tourna
ment match since the NCAA
Championships last spring de
feating Bryan Jones of North Caro
lina 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Stark, who sat
out the summer recovering from a
stress fracture in his foot, said he
felt only slightly uncomfortable on
the court.
“I got a little tentative,” said
Stark, a finalist at the Volvo last
year. “I had some nerves because
I'm not used to playing competitive
matches.”
Stark will play Chris Entzel of
Utah in Friday’s second round.
Entzel was a 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 victor
over Northwestern’s Steve Her-
doiza.
Texas’ Hubert Karrasch, a qual
ifier, pulled the only upset in sin
gles yesterday when he defeated
fifth-seeded Jason Netter of UCLA
6-4, 7-5.
Tommorrow’s action will feature
two rounds of singles and one
round of doubles starting at 9 a.m.
The singles and doubles finals will
be televised by Channel 34
(WNGM) on a tape-delay basis on
Wednesday Nov.7 at 7 p.m.

Georgia hosts Rugby Invitational Tournament
RUGBY - The SEC Invita
tional Rugby Tournament will take
place this weekend at the intra
mural fields with the first games
beginning Saturday at 10 a.m.
There will be 20 teams from
around the Southeast competing in
the entire event, which will include
three divisions of competition.
Georgia will enter teams in the A
and B divisions, while club teams
from around the region and a few
more collegiate clubs will enter the
remaining one.
Florida and Vanderbilt are the
only SEC schools not entering
teams.
“The tournament goes from
place to place on a rotating basis,”
said Mark Risse, a member of the
Bulldog rugby club and organizer
of the tournament. ‘Tor the first
time ever, we opened up the field
(to non-SEC teams) to make the
tournament more known in the
rugby world.”
The Georgia ruggers finished
second behind LSU in Baton Rouge
in the tourney last year.
SPORTS BRIEFS
The origin of the Georgia rugby
program dates back to 1967,
making it the second-oldest club
sport on campus behind syn
chronized swimming. However,
rugby is the biggest club sport at
the University.
This season, the ruggers have
been plagued with numerous inju
ries including a blow to A-side full
back Nick Metcalfe, who badly
bruised his leg playing in his first
game of American football. How
ever, in the true spirit of rugby,
Metcalfe should see playing time
this weekend.
Tm basically the poor sucker
they kick the bail to and then come
and nail me,” said Metcalfe of his
position.
The A-side is currently 1-3 on
the season with the lone win
coming against the Clemson club
team.
