Goff not worried about Gator blitz

Even though hie Bulldogs ai

are
position of being
19-point underdog to the 10th-
ranked Florida Gators, coach Ray
Goff isn’t worried.
Tm not betting on the game,’
Goff said. ‘Tve never been around
a team that no one else has
thought much about entering a
game like this one."
That's too bad because on
paper, the Gators seem to be in
vincible.
Florida has the SEC’S best of
fense and the 15th-best attack in
the nation. The Gators are aver
aging 435 yards a game in total
offense with the majority of that
coming through the air. Quar
terback Shane Matthews has
thrown 14 touchdown passes for
1,954 yards and has completed 60
percent of his passes. The Gator
passing offense is ninth in the na
tion and Goff was awestruck by
their passing prowess.
‘They are definitely a great of
fensive football team,’ Goff said.
However, as potent as their of
fense is, it is overshadowed by
the imposing Gator defensive
unit.

nents only 224 yards in total of
fense — the lowest in the SEC,
and the second best in the nation.
Florida is also giving up a meager
83 yards per game on the ground,
while allowing only 13 points a
game. In summary, Florida is
rather nasty when they don't
have the ball.
"Florida is by far the toughest
defensive team well see this
season,” offensive lineman Jack
Swan said.
“Florida’s defense isn’t as big [
as some others, but they have
outstanding speed and quick
ness,” quarterback Greg Talley
said.
In Florida’s 48-7 trashing of
Auburn last Saturday, the Ga
tors blitzed Auburn quarterback
Stan White until he couldn't see
anything but a blue blur in front
of him. The Gators have collected
22 sacks on the season and have
made 40 tackles for a loss of 120
yards combined. Florida’s de
fensive end Huey Richardson and
outside linebacker Ephesians
Bartley have combinea for 15
tackles for losses and four sacks.
Talley expects that the Gators
won’t tiy to fix a defensive
scheme that isn’t broken.
“When they jumped out on top
(of Auburn), they did a lot of
blitzing and they probably will
use the same game plan against
us,” Talley Baid.
The Georgia coaching staff and
the offense reviewed films of
Florida’s defense on third and
long situations, where they
blitzed, blitzed and blitzed some
more.
"It’s our job to read the blitzes
and come up with the proper
plays to counteract the blitz and
nurt them with it,” Swan said.

20 and 21,1988 to see if any money
had actually been placed in Gantt’s
account.
No record could be found and, in
addition, Gantt’a bank statement
from November and December
1988 aa well aa January 1989
doean’t indicate any $2,000 deposit
had been made.
‘The largeat deposit during that
time period was for $450 and that
was from a Pell Grant that Bryant
received," Dooley said.
Fish still stands by his story and
says that all of the information and
hi a findings are factual.
“I have no response to the Uni
versity’s statements, but I am
standing by my story,” Fish said
Tuesday.
Gantt was interviewed by Fish
and Journal staff writer Scott Reid
about the alleged transaction after
football practice Thursday.
Tuesday, Gantt said that he had
made an agreement with Fish not
to run any type of story until the
lir could go and check Gantt’s
statements.
"I told him (Fish) not to run a
story until we could go to the bank
and check everything out,” Gantt
said. “But, he didn’t do it.”
“I didn’t have any type of
agreement with Gantt,” Fish said.
“He was interviewed Thursday and
we tried to reach him Friday
morning but we never could reach
him.”
Dooley said that Gantt was at
the library on Friday.
Tolley, commissioned by Dooley
and the Georgia Athletic Associa
tion to study the allegations, com
piled a 12-page report complete
with signed statements from Gantt
and Allen, as well ns a copy of the
three bank statements.
Although the information is
sound and seemingly valid, ques
tions still remain. In the report,
Gantt: Should be eligible to finish out season.
Tolley didn't que
Henderson or Daniels ns to their
part in the affair. The report
doesn’t document any wire transfer
even though the receipt acquired
by Fish contains Gantt’s account
number.
In addition, Gantt, an Athens
resident, has known Tolley for 15
years and Gantt’s mother has pre
viously worked with Tolley.
“As far as I know, Mr. Tolley did
not have a conversation with
Schwartz nor Henderson,” Dooley
said. “Schwartz may have sent
something, but the point is that
bank records tell the story.”
Also, the entire investigation
took place over the weekend and in
his statement attached to his re
port, Tolley wrote that “the report
is brief and to the point because I
am working under severe time con
straints.”
Gantt was relieved that the inci
dent is over and he can now turn
his thoughts to the Bulldogs’ up
coming game against Florida.
“I’m glad its finally over and I
can focus on Florida, Gantt said.
“I haven’t decided whether or not
to take legal action against Mr.
Fish, but I do want some press
clearing my name.”
