Grapes return to squeeze out juicy, danceable rock tunes
By MAURA CORRIGAN
Contributing Writer
Athens many times has heard the
sounds of the Grapes, and they’re here
again tonight.
They are a popular band, perhaps be
cause of the great deal of variety in each
of their gigs. Their music’s rhythm and
blues/rock-and-roll foundation produces a
sound that is both danceable and inter
esting.
Drummer Preston Holcomb and bas
sist/lead vocalist Charlie Lonsdorf were
the leftover members from the group the
Dreadful Grapes. About six months after
that band broke up, in summer 1986, The
Grapes were bom following the addition
of rnythm guitarist Romin Dawson and
lead guitarist Ted Norton.
Dawson said that Norton definitely so
lidified the group when he joined.
‘"We had a good rhythm section when
he came in,” Dawson said. “He came in
and he has a good ear. We were tight and
we just needed that lead, so it all worked
out.”
This was Ted’s ideal opportunity. “I
was a lead guitar player without a band. I
saw the Grapes and I thought that I just
had to play with those guys. I had the
choice between forming my own band or
joining them, so I joined them and it has
worked out really well,” said Norton.
The Grapes took on a second drummer,
Steve Baird, in June 1987. Since then,
they’ve had a few periods when they
weren’t a full five-piece band, as when
Holcomb left temporarily. Now, however,
they’ve had a five-piece lineup for almost
‘When we play live, it
comes straight out of our
heads. It’s what we feel.’
Ted Norton
Grapes guitarist
a year.
Although they began by playing many
Grateful Dead cover tunes, the members
say they’re doing their own thing now.
“We play dance rock and roll,” Dawson
said. “We were influenced by the Allmann
Brothers and the Grateful Dead. We play
a lot of country blues and rhythm and
blues. The Allman Brothers and the
Doors play stuff like that, but just dif
ferent songs."
“We also have two drummers, like the
Dead, because it’s fun with two drum
mers,” Norton said. “The only similarity
is that we play long jams and the Dead
play long jams.”
The Grapes’ live shows are usually
very spontaneous. Rarely do they perform
the exact same material two nights in a
row.
‘"When we play live, it comes straight
out of our heads. It’s what we feel, not like
Yes, or other bands that are so pro
grammed,” Norton said.
The Grapes try to make each show as
different from their previous one as they
can. Often, they don’t even follow a set
list.
“If a song goes over well, one song will
turn into another song, and so on. What
ever comes out, comes out,” Norton said.
The band plays frequently throughout
Georgia and has also played in Tennessee
and Mississippi. Recently, they’ve been
playing a lot and are mixing recordings
for their first album. They said they plan
to send this recording to a few record com
panies in hopes of some positive feedback.
Although the release date depends on
whether they get any interest from the
companies, the recording should be out by
the beginning of 1991.
Norton said that there should be some
very interesting changes in the near fu
ture.
The Gropes will performing tonight at the
Georgia Theatre. Tickets are $5.

Mudd Puppies play for homeless
By KELLY THRELKELD
Contributing Writer
The Chickasaw Mudd Puppies
headline a charity concert tonight
to benefit the Athens area Home
less Shelter.
The benefit includes perfor
mances by Greenhouse, Roosevelt,
Big Sky and Rueben Anderson.
The shelter is one of three cat
ering to the needs of the needy in
Athens; the other two are the Sal
vation Army and Project Safe.
The shelter can accomodate up
to 20 men, women and children per
night. The service offers 2 meals a
day, a bed, local phone use, a
mailing address and a professional
case manager to help identify and
solve major problems.
‘The shelter is unique because it
uses volunteers so extensively,” Jo
seph Reed, the shelter’s director,
said. 'The volunteers provide the
personal touch between the com-
Brant Slay: Mudd singer
munity and the homeless people
which is very important. It helps to
provide a more hospitable environ
ment.”
The volunteers also perform
such services as taking care of the
guests’ children, cooking and
serving meals, maintaining the
shelter and serving on various
committees.
Michael Hutchinson, the orga
nizer of this benefit, said he hopes
that this concert will help raise
community awareness.
‘The public has a stereotypical
view of the homeless, but in actua
lity the largest percentage of home
less people are families,"
Hutchenson said.
Hutchenson described the bands
that will performing with the
Chickasaw Mudd Puppies as “se
rious rock and roll bands.”
The concert starts at 8:30 p.m. at
the Rockfish. Advance tickets are
$5 and available downtown at
Wuxtry.
