Paint fire damages
Sig Ep fraternity house

members and their insurance com
pany representative will meet with
Rainbow Painting and its rep
resentative at 9 a.m. today to dis
cuss damages resulting from a
Sunday afternoon fire at the frater-
ligma Phi Epsilon fraternity
mbers and their insurance com-
lity house.
Rai
nbow Painting employees
were burning paint off the house
when it caught fire.
‘The cause of the fire was the
painters’ torching the paint off the
side of the house," said Johnny
Pritchett, Clarke County fire mar
shall.
"It heated the rosin in the wood,
and it caught fire and went into the
attic. From what I understand, the
boys from Rainbow tried to put it
out with a garden hose.”
The Clarke County fire depart
ment responded at 2:27 p.m.
“One of my men made the call,”
said Lee Kisig, owner of Rainbow
Painting.
“I don’t know the cause of the
fire. It might have been electrical. I
don't want to say anything until
after the fire inspector makeB a de
cision.”
Torching wood to remove paint
from an older house is legal, Prit
chett Baid.
“From what I understand, using
torches to remove paint doesn’t vio
late any codes that I know of,” he
said.
Bob Holman, Sigma Phi Epsilon
damage in a few rooms, although
there will be no official word on the
amount until the meeting.
“I can’t say anything about dol
lars until then,” Holman, a junior
business major, said. “The damage
seems to be mostly water damage.
A sheetrock wall was destroyed,
some stereo equipment, some
couches and chairs and an oriental
rug, too.’
No one was hurt in the fire,
which was put out quickly.
“Using torches like that is inher
ently dangerous," Pritchett said.
“We train our workers in the use of
extinguishers and other safety pre
cautions."
Kisig said Rainbow’s insurance
company is paying for the frater
nity members living in the house to
stay at a local motel.
Holman noted the irony of the
situation.
“We just spent a lot of money on
safety improvements around the
house, so it is kind of ironic that
this happened," Holman said.
Russell Athletics gives student $1,000
By LAURA ROE
Campus Correspondent
Russell Athletics and the Uni
versity Bookstore awarded a stu
dent 91,000 Monday for correctly
identifying Napoleon Bonaparte,
Socrates and the Venus de Milo.
Kem McIntosh, a senior art ed
ucation major, will receive the
f irize money in three instal
ments for the next three quar
ters.
“There is more to life than foot
ball and sports,” said JoAnna
Newberry, Russell Athletics
Southeastern Sales Representa
tive.
‘The contest was another way
to encourage students, and to
give financial support to a stu
dent to pursue their degree.”
Russell Athletics sponsored a
national sweepstakes to coincide
with its Stay in School campaign,
Newberry said. No purchase was
necessary to win.
The campaign encourages stu
dent8 to stick with academics,
said Newberry, who presented
the award to McIntosh.
Russell Athletics sponsored
the contest in 20 U.S. schools, in
cluding the University of South
Carolina and Vanderbilt Univer
sity, Newberry said. The contest
required students to name three
historical figures clad in sports
wear on a poster.
The posters were on display in
the bookstore from late August
until McIntosh’s name was
drawn on Nov. 6.
McIntosh said she had pur
chased some shoes at the
bookstore on the day she entered
the contest. But she had for
gotten the contest and had to be
reminded.
McIntosh said she easily recog
nized Napolean and Socrates, but
guessed on Venus de Milo.
“I didn’t win it. My parents
did,” she said, meaning the
money would help her parents
pay for school.
Henry Bryan, the University
Bookstore director, said he was
excited about helping Russell
Athletics with its contest.
“We were very glad to partici
pate in it," he said.
Sherrie Butler, a receptionist
at the bookstore, said McIntosh’s
entry wasn’t the first one drawn,
but it was the first to correctly
identify the three historical fig
ures.
