Langham wins golf championship
By RANDY WALKER

Throughout the fall golf
season, the consistent play of se
nior Franklin Langham has been
the highlight of coach Dick Co-
pas’s squad.
After two mediocre finishes
early in the season, and a third-
place finish at the MacGregor
Tournament of Champions in.
Knoxville, Tenn., Langham broke
through to win his first-ever col
legiate golf championship last
weekend at the Southern Inter
collegiate Golf Championships at
the Athens Country Club.
The senior from Thomson, Ga.
shot a final round, 3-under-par
69 to edge teammate Greg Ken
nedy for the individual title with
a 54-hole total of 215, 1-under-
par.

status for this year."
The former Georgia walk-on
attributed his win mainly to his
consistency and his ability to stay
out of major trouble.
"I played solid for all three
rounds," said Langham, who
leads Georgia with a 72.5 stroke
average. “A couple of times, I hit
some bed shots, but you try to
cover up for the times you do
bad."
Despite the cold and blustery
weather during Saturday’s 27
holes of competition, Langham
stayed out of trouble and stayed
in contention before he made his
move on the final 18 holes.
After birdies at No. 5, 6, 7, and
9, Langham went on to make bir
dies at No. 10 and No. 12.
“You make the birdies when
you can,” Langham said. “For me
they came in the middle of the
round.”
Langham's momentum slowed
a bit coming in, bogeying 15 and
17.0n the 419-yard, par 4 15th,
Langham hit his tee-snot into the
left rough. His second shot
landed just short of the green,
where he chipped up and two-
putted for the bogey.
“On 15, he hit it in the wrong
area,” Copas said. “He did well to
make bogey there.”
After bogeying from the
bunker on No. 17, Langham
calmly sank a three-foot par putt
on No. 18 to seal the victory.
Langham was enthused about
his first collegiate victory, but
he’d rather switch it for a team
victory, which Georgia Tech
snatched from the Dogs by three
shots.

Contrary to previous reports by
other sources, Georgia coach Ray
Goff said that Greg Talley will defi
nitely start at quarterback Sat
urday evening when the Bulldogs
travel to Auburn for a nationally
televised contest against the Tigers
(6-2-1, 3-1-1 in the SEC) on ESPN
at 7:30 p.m.
“I don’t know where the rumor
started about Joe Dupree starting
against Auburn, but tnat was a big
misconception,” Goff said. "I never
said that Joe would start. Greg did
not play at his best against Florida,
but he will start.”
Talley had a rough time against
the Gators completing only six of
12 passes for 93 yards and two in
terceptions. Dupree didn’t change
the pace as he went two for 11 for
17 yards.
Despite the poor performance,
Talley ranks second in the SEC in
completion percentage and is the
third-rated quarterback in the con
ference behind Vanderbilt’s Mike
Healey and Florida’s Shane Mat
thews.
“A lot of the good play of Flor
ida’s defense was bad offensive
playing by us,” Talley said.
Goff did say that Dupree will re
ceive more playing time, but he re
fused to say how much more.
“Joe will continue to play more,"
Goff said. “How much more? Well, I
can’t answer that because more is
more. It’s hard to say anything else
because he will just play more.”
Things can’t get much worse for
the Bulldogs (4-5, 2-4 in the SEC)
as they enter the final two games
trying to avoid their first losing
season since 1977. Wide receiver

Rodney McCoy suffered torn
thumb ligments and is out for the
season. He will undergo surgery
Friday. McCoy is the third player
this season sidelined by a thumb
injury. Tracey Huzzie and Brian
Cleveland were the others.
Wide receiver Andre Hastings,
who scored the Bulldogs’ lone
touchdown against the Gators, is
still hampered by an ankle injury
and his status is “day to day,*
according to Goff.
If Hastings can’t play, defensive
back and punt returner Chuck
Carswell will return kickoffs and
Sean Hummings will start at split
end. Offensive lineman Russell De-
foor, who didn’t play a down
against Florida, has recovered
from a knee injury and will play
Saturday.
“I’m not sure if he will start, but
he definitely will play,” Goff said.
‘We need him because we played
Florida with only six healthy down
linemen, and if something would
have happened to one of them we
would have really been in trouble."
BULLDOG BITES: The last
time Georgia defeated Auburn was
on Nov. 15, 1986 in Auburn when
the Bulldogs upset the Tigers 20-
16 before an ESPN nationally tele
vised audience.
Since 1960, Georgia is 8-6-1
playing in Auburn and the Tigers
are 11-4 playing in Athens. Both
head coaches in Saturday’s game
played for the Bulldogs.
Since 1953, in the years when
Florida defeated Georgia, the Bull
dogs are 5-11 the following week
against Auburn.
