Davis leaps to start in game
By PHILLIP RAMATI
Sports Writer
Every high school basketball
Btar coming into college has a
major adjustment to make.
Bernard Davis is no exception.
The Georgia freshman and
former Richmond Hill High School
star will be fighting for playing
time on a Bulldog backcourt that
includes veterans Rod Cole, Litte-
rial Green, Jody Patton, and
Shaun Golden.
But Davis is not worried about
getting playing time. He is excited
about playing for the defending
SEC champs.
"(College basketball) will be dif
ferent,” the 5-11 guard said. "But I
can't let that discourage me.”
Davis should see playing time
Saturday when the Bulldogs take
on Marathon Oil in the Coliseum.
He arrived at Georgia with out-

standing credentials. He averaged
22 points, five rebounds, and five
assists per game his senior year.
He led his Richmond Hill team
to the state Final Four the last
three years, including a state
championship in 1988. His excep-
tional play in this past year’s state
playoffs made a strong impression
on the Georgia coaching staff, who
made a strong recruiting push for
him. Davis also considered
Clemson and Florida St., but fell in
love with Georgia after he visited
Athens.
His high school coach, Jimmy
Hires, is glowing with his descrip
tion of Davis’ skills.
M He is a true point guard with
his size," said Hires. ‘He can do it
all. He can shoot the three-pointer,
and handle the ball. He’s a com
plete player. I don’t know if there is
a weakness to his game.”
Georgia coach Hugh Durham is
also impressed with Davis’ speed
and skills.
“He is impressive with his atti
tude, and his ability to pick up the
offense,” said Durham. “I’d feel
confident putting him in the
game.”
How much time Davis will get
this year is not clear, but he will be
part of the backcourt rotation.
What is clear is that he is
looking forward to playing with his
backcourt mates, and is hoping to
pick up a few pointers as well.
“It’s a plus for me. They know
what it takes to win in the SEC,"
Davis said. “Anything I learn from
them will be a positive.”
Davis’s play is already starting
to pay dividends. In the 128-92
romp over Newcastle last Friday,
he scored five points and dished off
three assists in just six minutes.

Auburn: Tradition for Rocker
By MATTHEW BROWN
Sports Writer
The phrase “It runs in the
family” nas held special meaning
in the Auburn defensive line in
recent years.
First, there was Tracy Rocker,
whose defensive prowess led to
three All-SEC and two All-Amer
ican honors from 1986-88, along
with the Outland Trophy and
Lombardi Award in 1988. But
just when Tiger opponents
thought it was safe to get back on
the field, another Rocker was
standing there waiting for them.
Saturday night, in his last
game at Jordan-Hare Stadium in
Auburn, Tracy's younger brother
David will be waiting to get his
hands on some Georgia Bulldogs.
David, the senior defensive
tackle from Fulton High School
in Atlanta, says football has been
a part of the Rocker family as far
as he can remember.
“We would always play the
game in our front vard,” Rocker
said. “But back then, I didn’t
even know it had a name. It
wasn’t until third grade that I
found out it was called football.”
The 6-4, 264 pound Rocker, an
All-SEC performer last season,
feels he has been able to establish
his own identity at Auburn de
spite the huge shoes he had to
“It hasn’t been hard," he said.
‘They have appreciated what I
have done here.”
Those who have followed
Rocker's career at Auburn know
that this is only his second year
in the starting line-up, which he
feels has held up his devel
opment.
“I feel that playing here at Au
burn, I have not been able to
reach my full potential as a
player," he said. “I was backed up
for two years and it hampered my
development. Plus, I have had
some injury problems as well.”
In what hasn’t been a typical
dominating Auburn team people
are used to seeing, the 1990 team
has been subjected to harsh crit
icism. However, Rocker doesn’t
think much of it has been totally
justified.
“At the end of the season,
people will say ‘Well, they won
this game by one point and that
game by two. That’s not impres
sive,’ ” he said. ‘The bottom line
is that we won those games, re
gardless of how we did it.”
Auburn Defensive Coordinator
Wayne Hall has appreciated the
effort given by his star lineman,
and will be sorry to see him leave
the Tigers for the NFL.
“He’s a great kid and a good
competitor. Hall said. “He is a
hara worker and has a great de
sire to win. That is an important
trait for any player. We sure will
miss him.”
Georgia Offensive Line coach
Joe Hollis realizes the task that
faces his linemen Saturday is a
formidable one.
David Rocker
“He (Rocker) is an outstanding
football player,” Hollis said. “He’s
a big, strong veteran who poses
an interesting, physical matchup
for our guys like (Lemonte)
Tellis, (Russell) DeFoor, and Wil
liam Wynn.”
Rocker is looking forward to
playing the team from his home
state.
This is my homecoming," he
said. “I have lots of friends on the
Georgia side. It’s a sense of pride
for me.”
With his college career coming
to a close, David Rocker just
wants to be remembered as one
who gave his all.
“It’s been a pleasure to be a
part of the great defensive line
tradition at Auburn,” he said.
