Hinterland brings Ireland’s trials home
Religion and politics taint album
By CARY DiCRISTINA
Contributing Writer
Hinterland: “Kissing the Roof of
Heaven” (Island)
Someone famous once said
that the only two things to come
out of Ireland are religion and
politics.
The recent debut album from
Ireland's Hinterland is no excep
tion to this rule.
Their album, "Kissing the Roof
of Heaven,” is an album that U2,
Hothouse Flowers and the old
master Van Morrison would be
proud of.
Like U2 during their Unforget
table Fire period, Hinterland
doesn't just write songs — they
paint experiences.
The first track, "Dark Hill," sets
the theme for the album: Conflicts
between reality and fantasy.
It gives an honest account of
what it must be like to live in Ire
land.
Hinterland creates songs that
deal with contemporary Ireland.
ALBUM REVIEW
‘Kissing the Roof of
Heaven’ is not a big
message’ album. It’s
not a collection of pre
recorded pop
masquerading as music
(a la New Kids) or
heavy metal noise (a la
Wasp) either.
Today Ireland is struggling
with its ties to religion, alcohol
and its past.
In the songs “Reporter," and
“God’s Reverb," Ireland is por
trayed as a country trying to ascer
tain its faith in a place where faith
is constantly dilluted with politics.
“Stanley’s Minutes" depicts
Hinterland: Ireland's new hit band.
the life of an alcoholic with stun
ning effectiveness. The listener is
f >ut in the position of Stanley, sl
owing him to feel the isolation
and pain of the disease and the
rejection from society.

In "Aeroplanes,” Ireland’s
World War II past is examined
from the point-of-view of a young
man who gives his life flying for
the British.
Although these songs may ap
pear to be somber and melodra
matic, they contain a compassion
and an insight that is rarely seen
in modern music.
This album is not a big “mes
sage” album.
It’s not a collection of pre-re
corded pop masquerading as music
(a la New Kids) or heavy metal
noise (a la ' ’asp) either.
It’s a meticulously crafted album
that isn’t afraid to focus its music
on something important and not on
what the agents think.

Local clubs face trials
of the Athens night life
By KELLY THRELKELD
Contributing Writer
As we all know, Athens has
been highly publicized for its di
verse music scene. You’ve all
heard of them: 40 Watt, Rockfish,
Papa Joe’s and the Georgia
Theatre, to name a few. Although
the aforementioned clubs ba
sically serve the same purpose, to
cater to live music fans, they each
tend to operate in a distinct way.
Most of the top band-booking
clubs all go through the everyday
politics of owning a club. The
club-owning business is plagued
by many inherent problems.
There is always trouble with
traveling bands, equipment prob
lems and, inevitably, anything
surrounding alcohol.
According to JR Greene, “it’s
almost to the point that it isn’t
fun anymore. Tnere are too many
{ troblems with the bands to make
t enjoyable.”
Jared Bailey has realized the
benefit of size and is underway
with plans to move the 40 Watt to
a bigger location. He says that
“it’s been frustrating at times
wanting the bigger bands, but
not being able to accommodate
them.”
The owners are naturally also
responsible for booking bands to
play in their club. If an owner
sees a band and likes them, he’s
more likely to give that band
better slots to play, and work
harder for the group. Each of the
three original music bars,
Rockfish, 40 Watt and Georgia
Theatre, approach the task of
booking bands differently. Al
most all of the bands interested
in playing in a club send demo
tapes and press kits to each of the
clubs.
In order for performing to be
come profitable, especially to
local bands, they definitely need
a distinct sound or a large group
of friends. At 40 Watt and the
Rockfish, most of the bands are
paid whatever is at the door. If
they are playing on a particularly
sluggish night, usually Monday
through Thursday, there might
not be too many people there.
This means a small amount of
money. Usually, at the Georgia
Theatre, the bands are paid upf
ront, so they are guaranteed
money.
Although the clubs that fea
ture live entertainment seem to
make money, it is an uphill
struggle. Since the band gener
ally takes the door money, the
club makes its revenue from the
alcohol sales.
JR says “the business can be
profitable, but not in Athens. The
beer is sold too cheap here for
anyone to make any money."
Because of the uncertainty in
the money-making area, many
bars have not followed the live
entertainment format. Ken
Fulghum, of O’Malley’s finds that
“live bands aren’t productive—
vou can’t make any money. Live
band clubs play a game of Rus
sian roulette— some days the
draw is good, and some days it
isn’t.”
