Straight ahead sound storm

Storm Orphans: “Living In A Wasted Union” (Low
Rumble)
As thunder rages, so do the Storm Orphans. The
Tuscaloosa, Ala., band just released their third
album, “Living In A Wasted Union.” The new record
picks up where their first album, “Promise No Pa
rade,” left off.
“Promise No Parade" was an album filled with over-
the-top hard rock and cutting yet hypnotic ballads.
“Living In A Wasted Union” is in the same vein, but is
a vast leap forward in terms of fluidity and cohesion.
The production is efficient and the mix showcases
each members’ talents without bogging down the
overall sound. The players have refined and honed
their sound into that of a churning hard rock machine.
The result is no frills.
“Dark Woman,” “Crossover Dream,” and “Jaded
Teen” highlight the disc. The anthematic songs focus
on love, the problems with corporate America and the
burdens and addictions of today’s society.
Mark Patrick’s guitar rolls carelessly free
throughout the compositions giving them a rowdy and
chunky big-guitar sound. The rhythms are solid and
extremely powerful. Jack Massey’s drums are cut-

tingly precise and Shawn Patrick’s bass supplies the
thunderous bottom. Rusty Luquire’s vocals are sharp,
decisive bursts of brat-like intensity showering the
music with a poetic frenzy.
For all its calculated aggression, the song “If I Were
a Knockin’* stands out like a diamond in the rough. It
d a . s ^J 1 ^ n 8 ballad dealing with racial strife. Mark
Patrick’s acoustic prowess is clearly evident.
Massey and Shawn Patrick reduce the tempo to an
flowing, ebbing beat that coincides with Luquire’s
painful statements of, “I worry about the white man,
what’s he gonna do, well is he gonna bash some
heads... So sad about the black man, I know he’s got a
past of doing after all the rest.”
“Ice Cream is for Coolin’” is a funky, rolling jaunt.
It’s a party blast of straight hard rock which slams the
door shut on the end of the album with conviction.
Overall, the Storm Orphans have developed their
own style of barroom hard rock. It’s stripped of all ef
fects and delivered at a frantic pace. They tour heavily
throughout the South and their live shows are loud
bouts of frenzied rebellion.
Storm Orphans open for Athens' premier power trio,
Waylaid, tonight at the 40 Watt.

Gang of Four: “A Brief History of
the Twentieth Century” (Warner
Bros.)
When the roll call of great early
eighties post-punk bands is read, it
probably goes something like this:
The Cure, Joy Division/New Order,
R.E.M., U2, The Smiths and a few
others. Most of these still exist in
one form or another, which prob
ably explains their canonization.
Gang of Four was perhaps the
greatest of them all and no one
talks about them anymore. They
burned like a brushfire for four
years (1979-1983) and then blew
away.
Now, praise Marx, the genius of
Gang of Four is available in one 20-
song Warner Brothers compilation
at a record store near you. They
call it “A Brief History of the Twen
tieth Century,” which pretty much
sums it up. It’s all here — the op
pression, the alienation, the ram-

pant consumerism and all the bass
a listener could want.
Gang of Four took the politics of
the Clash and the funk of George
Clinton, stripped them both down
to the minimum and added mili
tant drums and spare bursts of
guitar fire to make a statement
worth getting excited about.
The best thing about this compi
lation is the way it traces the mu
sical development of the band. By
the end track, the mix is busier
with no loss of directness.
The album kicks off with the
masterpeice manifesto of isolation
“At Home He’s a Tourist” and ends
with it’s companion piece, “We Live
As We Dream, Alone” from four
years later. In between, it stops in
on the classics “Not Great Men,”
“Cheeseburger” and the 1982
dance club hit “I Love a Man in a
Uniform.”
In actuality, any serious pro
gressive music fan already shoul-
down Gang of Four’s debut album
“Entertainment!” and its bookend
“Songs of the Free.” Still, this com
pilation will do for the unitiated.
Since it leans heavily on those two
albums, it contains some great
songs from lesser albums and
“Songs of the Free” is out of print.
Whither Gang of Four? Some of
its members have scattered into
lesser roles in Shriekback and the
B-52’s. The rest? Maybe they’re
holding political office somewhere.
In the meantime, ‘A Brief His
tory of the Twentieth Century” is a
good pick. It’s a nice pnckage with
a pretty cover, great liner notes
and some of the best music of the
1980s.

Echo and the Bunnymen: “Rever
beration” (Sire)
The end of 1989 saw the Liv
erpool, England, band Echo and
the Bunnymen with a very uncer
tain future. Their frontman, Ian
McCulloch, left the band and
drummer Peter de Freitas died in a
motorcycle accident. Most bands
would’ve let their careers stop
here, but not the Bunnymen.
Despite McCulloch’s claim that
this new incarnation would only be
“Echoes of the Bunnymen,” the
band returns with an unbelievably
good album that promises a bright
future for the band.
The only thing to dislike about
“Reverberation” is its ridiculous
neo-psychedelic sleeve. It looks as
though they’re trying to outdo
Deee-Lite in the nostalgia market.
The music inside is another

■ ALBUM REVIEW
story. I’ve just finished a seventh
listen to this brilliant record and
the mystical majesty of the music
still captivates me.
From the Oriental glory of the
single “Enlighten Me” to the
hidden horror of “Freaks Dwell,"
there isn’t a bum note to be found.
Noel Burke, the new vocalist, is
an excellent replacement for the
increasingly moody Mr. McCul
loch.
Burke’s voice is reminiscent of
House of Love’s Guy Chadwick in
places, and he exudes a strong opti
mism and confidence that McCul
loch was sorely lacking on his solo
“Candleland” and even the last
Bunnymen album of 1987.
The musical backbone of Los
Pattinson and Will Sergeant is
strengthened by the addition of
Damon Reece and Jake Brockman.
Their style is reminiscent of the
band’s most moving albums.
Nowhere is this more obvious
than on the incredible closing
tracks, “Flaming Red” and “Fnlse
Goodbyes.” They sound like out-
takes from the band’s masterpiece,
“Ocean Rain.”
“Reverberation” probably won’t
surpass the No. 51 chart peak of
their last album in this country,
but it deserves to be bought by the
truckload.
Nothing else released this year
moves me quite as much as this. 1
can’t recommend it enough.
